Help! Do I need to go to the hospital?!

I've been contracting for about 13 hours. They're 6 mins apart by strong. When I've called the hospital they say I should try and do more at home but I'm in so much pain. I'm too embarrassed to call again to ask if it's time yet, because they keep saying 4 in 10 but I'm just not getting there. Been about 1 in 6 for about 5-6 hours.

Help!

3 in 10 at my trust. Push to go in if you need too. Good luck!

2022IamHavingYa · 06/01/2022 22:09

How long are they lasting?

Water is your friend too.

showersandflowers · 06/01/2022 22:11

@2022IamHavingYa about a minute consistently for the last few hours.

Just got out of the bath- it was bliss but husband needed to nap, to be ready to drive me hopefully in a few hours and I didn't want to get stuck in the bath on my own!

It's five years ago, but I was told 'four in ten minutes OR if you're not coping'

I went in at 1 in 5 because I was not coping. I was 4cm so they let me stay thankfully (it took about five hours from there).

Call back and tell them you're not coping.

Frlrlrubert · 06/01/2022 22:12

Oh, and good luck!

ivykaty44 · 06/01/2022 22:13

Hot water bottle?

ElleGettingBetter · 06/01/2022 22:14

I never got to 4 in 10 and was 9cm dilated when they finally agreed to let me go in.

Go in!

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 06/01/2022 22:14

Tell them you're not coping op. Good luck

Frazzled2207 · 06/01/2022 22:16

I’d go in and say you’re struggling.
It was similar for me but then progressed very quickly. Had to get to the hospital in a bit of a hurry
Good luck

showersandflowers · 06/01/2022 22:17

@ElleGettingBetter this is what I'm afraid of! I think this may be what's happening!

I'm certainly not coping, I think it may be go time.

Are you in a comfy position when contractions happen? I liked all fours or on knees leaning over side of bed, couch etc.

You could try laying out a really cute babygro in front of you and focus on how each contraction is bringing your baby closer.

Maybe I’m a grump but if you want to be in bath and need him, then not a good time for DH to nap!! I was in the shower during most of my first labour, heat helps so much. Good luck!!

Wagsandclaws · 06/01/2022 22:33

If you aren't coping it's time to go in - good luck!

MyGreenTutu · 06/01/2022 22:34

First baby I found that the pain dropped off quite a bit when I got to hospital; fear makes it feel much worse. Wasn't so scared once I got there and labour progressed well enough - I delivered about five hours later.

Second baby, I was much more in calm control and had to beg my midwife to examine me; she didn't think I was making enough noise to be approaching full dilation. Bingo; I was 9cm!

You know your body best.

Lacedwithgrace · 06/01/2022 22:50

Listen to your body and baby and advocate for your own health. Best of luck OP x

FiloPasty · 06/01/2022 23:03

Good luck you’ve got this!

IncessantNameChanger · 06/01/2022 23:08

I was 9cm when I rocked up at hospital. I dont think they was even 5 minutes apart, much less that 4 in ten

Babyfg · 06/01/2022 23:30

Go to the hospital tbh if baby arrives tonight you won't be seeing the staff at the hospital much in the future to worry about being embarrassed!

I'd ring and say I was 4 in ten, they're not going to kick you out without checking.

I know the nhs is stretched but I think it's so unfair it's normal for labouring woman to be scared to go in and at home scared and in pain at what is probably the most vulnerable time of their lives.

JustWonderingIfYou · 06/01/2022 23:35

If it's your first then you might have quite a while to go if only 13 hrs in. Also I think most women are really a lot more comfortable at home, I'd hang on.

Also i'd say you're coping if you can mumsnet!

Do you find Patronising often helps in these situations?

With my first my contractions never came close together, even in established labour. It took me 49 hours to get from 5-10 cm, and I was in absolute agony by then. You're not a medical professional - don't go giving out advice which could be dangerous.

Hope you are ok @showersandflowers and are cuddling your baby x
