So we're writing it German but pronouncing it French. Is that right? So Giselle (like hell - just kidding but rhymes with it) and not Gi-sel-le. I'm less keen on the second one just from the sound.

Anna8888 · 21/12/2007 21:08

SSStollenzeit - oh yes, Petra that was another one.

The German class at my school was crawling with those sorts of names - but indeed, I am sure the fashions have moved on. Still would associate Gisela with that generation though.

I wanted to call dd Anastasia but the bloody disney film came out when she was born so I didn't, then it wasn't even a hit and there were no other Anastasias...
Irrelevant rant, sorry.

foxinsocks · 21/12/2007 21:10

it makes me think of a gazelle

KashaSarrasin · 21/12/2007 21:11

I like it - in fact it was on my shortlist of girls names (except DS turned out to be a boy!) but (french) DH vetoed it on the grounds that in France it's seen as quite old-fashioned, like Doreen would be in English. Still think it's very pretty though, pronounced/spelled either the French or German way.

PaulaYatesbiggestfan · 21/12/2007 21:11

Petrova always loved her in ballet shoes

CloudAtlas · 21/12/2007 21:12

think it's a tad chav

moyasmum · 21/12/2007 21:13

dd2 's first words were "sounds like gazelle",Its a nice name but get used to all the other kids saying the same in the class.

Anna8888 · 21/12/2007 21:13

Kasha - yes, you're right, in French it's very 1940s in a Doreenish type way...

Clara is very pretty. There's a Klara (Polish) in my daughter's class.

kerala · 21/12/2007 21:15

French?

turquoise · 21/12/2007 21:15

I think Gazelle would be quite nice, in a Jilly Cooperish, Borzoi, Cable etc way.

robinredbreast · 21/12/2007 21:18

ive ruled this name out now thanks may have it as a middle name though lol although may have to have a shorter middle name lol

Isn't there a Bernice who gets muesli rubbed in her hair turquoise?
These names take me back to foreign penfriendland in the 70s
Valerie/Ghislaine/Christiane/Josiane anyone?

turquoise · 21/12/2007 21:36

ooh yes - Bernice who was called Bare-knees by the char.
I really like Ghislaine too but - Maxwell.

Nightynight · 21/12/2007 21:56

why not Gisela, the german variant. the G is hard.

Nightynight · 21/12/2007 21:58

oh, I see it has already been suggested! I love this name, and have met several Giselas in Germany.

QuintessentialShadowOfSnowball · 21/12/2007 22:07

If you look HERE The artist is Sissel. It is pronounced like Giselle, but with an S. That would be quite unusual, and far from disney princess and sad ballet connotations

bookofchristmascarolsmum · 21/12/2007 22:08

It's a lovely name.

SSStollenzeit · 21/12/2007 22:10
