Is naming our dd Delilah a form of abuse?

Everyone hates it except me and my dh, she can be called Della of Lilah for short, we love it... what are your thoughts?

I really like Delilah...and Jonah!

Magrat · 21/12/2007 18:50

I don't honestly think any parent would name a child a name where they actually have to ask whether it's a form of abuse .. must mean there's a small kernel of doubt somewhere in your head .. and that's going to grow and grow over the pregnancy

always shocked when people say they like Jonah .. it's synonymous with 'bad luck charm' .. why / how would you do that?

lionbeast · 21/12/2007 19:38

i like it, but ill bet your dd will get asked why why why delilah, quite a few times and could well piss her off

edam · 21/12/2007 19:40

I do like Delilah but you'd have to be quite a strong character to cope...maybe having an entertaining name strengthens your character anyway, dunno!

CorrieDale · 21/12/2007 19:41

I think it's a lovely name. But she'll be sick of hearing 'why, why, why, Deeeeelilah' but the time she's 12.

RudolphtherednoseEANDHdeer · 21/12/2007 19:44

our friends had this as their choice and then had a son, at first I was a bit but its actually a very pretty name.

They have now recently had a little girl and they called her Floella which really surprised me but it really suits her

bluebell82 · 21/12/2007 19:51

I do love it and understand that it may seem strange my querying our name choices- we've tried really hard not to discuss names but the first timegrandparents have literally drove us round the twist asking so we have buckled! Our surname is boring so it needs to have some umpgh behind them.. Floella is lovely too... We were thikning Isobel or Isolde or Ruby or Penny? God it is difficult

It IS difficult. I agree with that. No, it isn't abuse but I wouldn't do it. Not Delilah. I mean I immediately hear "whore" after it, you know. Maybe by the time she's a teenager though, practically no one she meets will have heard the story though. Wouldn't be surprised.

If I could switch off the connotations for a minute, I'd say the actual sound of the name is quite nice.

ocomeALLYebabies · 21/12/2007 19:59

not read whole thread, but i love it, it is my first choice for current baby if a girl. however i'd be tempted to shorted to Del!

if you like it go for it, it's not like many people would know the story anymore and people dont judge people on their names anymore. i met a 3yo called Jez the other day, short for Jezebel!!!!

MrsJohnCuSackFullOfPresents · 21/12/2007 20:04

I know a CHarlotte Delilah , and the Delilah bit is after the song, as it's the Stoke City song....

anyway, I do like it, but the story behind it isn't great as magrat says. mind you, the story behind my DD's name is pretty depressing but noone ever knows it anyway.

Dixichik · 21/12/2007 20:05

Delilah is a great name. Wasn't there a Delilah Dingle in Emmerdale?

She may up with a nickname at school though like "delly belly".

Love it! We almost went for it but settled for just the shortened version in the end as we thought we'd use it more. Screw what anyone else thinks, it won't matter when she is named!

MrsJohnCuSackFullOfPresents · 21/12/2007 20:27

oh I didn't even notice!
good choice Bluebell...

and this lila

tyaca · 22/12/2007 00:39

go for it. great name. and lilah is a fab abbrev'.

when we told out BFs that we'd picked an old testament name, they became convinced that if it wasnt Delilah, it should be. Unfort'ly, our surname is Dear and the Dee Dee combo is just a bit too theatrical. ho hum

lou33 · 22/12/2007 01:19

dd1's middle name is delilah

i wanted it as her first name but exh wouldnt comply

i still love it

ADDICTEDtosayingHAAAAAAAPYxmas · 22/12/2007 01:34

there's somone on a tv programme called della i'm sure of it ... help me out here someone.

amytheearwaxbanisher · 22/12/2007 01:35

i like it

LoveAngelGabriel · 22/12/2007 11:07

The word 'Delilah' is very p[retty, but the connotations (not very nice woman in the bible; Tom Jones; pissed blokes doing karaoke) are a bit off. Tis up to you, though. hardly anyone liked our name for DS and I couldn't give a flying fiddle.

LoveAngelGabriel · 22/12/2007 11:09

Random Della trivia:

lesbian character in Eastenders donkeys years ago (Binnie & Della)

Wasn't the Anthea Turner's husband's ex (the one he left her for) called Della?

never known any other Dellas.

(I am fecking sad, am I not?)

turquoise · 22/12/2007 11:09

Addicted - are you thinking of "Sing em a song Della" off last year's X Factor?

Quite like Delilah but you would get that song constantly.

JulesJules · 22/12/2007 11:24

Love Delilah, and it shortens well, also love Lila, Della, Dilly, etc. Unusual and pretty.

motherinferior · 22/12/2007 11:36

I very, very nearly called DD1 Delilah.
