Fetal hiccups in late pregnancy

Stupidly I googled (yes I know that's dangerous alone!) about how many times should a baby get hiccups in the womb as mine has them most days 3/4 times a day that I'm aware and I've worried myself. Ive recently had a few episodes where she's been quieter so I've been monitored on a CTG loads and she's been fine and I had a scan for RFM and everything appeared fine. I also had a bleed at 34 weeks and was admitted to DAU overnight and given steroids. I'm 36 weeks on Thursday and have another scan Wednesday but I've decided to start writing down each time she gets them and for how long. She's had them twice so far today, the first was 13 minutes and second ones she's got now has had them for over 15 minutes and still going. I just wondered if anyone had any experiences of their baby having fetal hiccups a lot and if their midwife said anything?

My DS had hiccups all the time when I was pregnant. I don't remember the midwife saying anything. When he was a baby he had quite bad reflux and I always wondered whether there was a connection. He's 2 now and absolutely fine.

tilly2019 · 19/12/2021 21:31

My daughter got them about 4 times a day, everyday, for the final few months!

Currently pregnant with twins and one is hiccoughing away as we speak! Lower twin gets them more than upper twin (3 times a day vs once or twice respectively).

It's very very very unlikely to be anything bad! In fact, it's actually quite good as strengthening their lungs etc. Your baby is just likely to get hiccoughs more once they're born.

Unless it becomes suddenly very excessive (as in, unusually so for you) there's nothing to worry about. Some people, me included, just have very hiccoughy babies lol

Yep, all the time, scared myself shitless on Google as the first link said she was probably dying... funnily enough she was absolutely fine, was a super hiccupy baby on the outside too until about 6months, then it stopped!

GuidingSpirit · 19/12/2021 21:34

DD had loads of hiccups every single day when i was pregnant. The midwives never seemed concerned. She came out with loads of hair, has reflux and gets lots of hiccups now at 6months as well! Blush

TaVeryMuchLove · 19/12/2021 21:40

Both of mine had this loads. I too made the mistake of googling it, but when I mentioned it to my midwife, she wasn’t even slightly concerned. Always worth a mention to your midwife if you’re worried though.

DS hiccuped most days towards the end of my pregnancy. It’s a very odd feeling isn’t it! 🙂 He had reflux as a baby and I wondered if it could sometimes be a sign of that? I didn’t think that hiccuping was anything to worry about though xx

Crazydoglady123 · 19/12/2021 21:42

Thanks everyone. I'm sure DS had them loads and still had them loads when he was born but was 10 years ago and can't remember how far along the pregnancy it was he got them to. I'll keep monitoring them till my appointments later this week and mention it but my mind is put at ease so thank you

My baby girl had this, and had bad reflux when born, and then diagnosed as CMPA. (Dairy allergy) I now realised any time I had eaten dairy when pregnancy it was very likely to bring on hiccups for my baby , and it gave me awful heartburn.

MomentToThink · 19/12/2021 21:45

Ha I did the same thing and made myself nervous too. My son is perfectly healthy - although he still gets hiccups quite a lot!

Lou573 · 19/12/2021 21:48

Mine had them all the time! Both fine although refluxy if there’s any connection.

OnlySantaCanJingleMyBells · 19/12/2021 21:52

Mine was the same. I also googled abs acted myself silly! Phones the hospital and was reassured that it was normal (not so on the states, seemingly!). If you’re concerned get checked, even just to put your mind at ease.

My 2 year old is still hiccuppy!

DPotter · 19/12/2021 21:54

DD would hiccup every evening when I sat down to relax pre-bed. I found it quite cute - this was pre-google so didn't have that to worry me. She didn't have reflux, doesn't hiccup anymore than usual now

ChristmasWithBellsOn · 19/12/2021 21:56

DD was super hiccuppy right up until her birth. She wasn't particularly refluxy as a baby though. At the time, I didn't even know that it was something to be concerned about.

OnlySantaCanJingleMyBells · 19/12/2021 21:57

Googled and scared myself silly! That should have said.

Jsh125 · 19/12/2021 21:57

Same, my first hiccuped easily 5 or 6 times a day, I also googled it & scared myself stupid but he was just perfect, hiccuped a lot as a baby as it happens Smile. My second was quite a hiccuper too.

However, if you're worried always get checked out, they would always rather you got checked than leave it & find there was an issue.

Mossstitch · 19/12/2021 22:02

Well didn't have Google in my day...... Ignorance was bliss🤔😂 but could tell the time with my first, he used to have hiccups same time of day every evening.

Chely · 19/12/2021 22:19

Our baby had them loads in the womb and after every feed for her 1st few months outside too. Not a problem, she's a perfectly healthy and thriving 4mth old now.

2021mumma · 19/12/2021 22:26

My little one was always hiccuping inside me and now he is out still hiccups daily!

linerforlife · 19/12/2021 22:26

My DD hiccuped loads every day in my tummy! And then on the outside until she was about 6 months. I thought it was a good thing!

Longdistance · 19/12/2021 22:33

My dd1 hiccuped all the time. She wasn’t much of a mover, but when she hiccuped I was reassured. She did this several times a day.

ffscovid · 19/12/2021 23:04

My youngest hiccuped all the time in late pregnancy. He was fine, although like a pp's DC, had bad reflux as a small baby.

Crazydoglady123 · 19/12/2021 23:40

Thank you. My girl is the survivor of VTS. I lost her twin at 9 weeks so I know I just worry over nothing the whole time till she's here 🙈

My son hiccuped CONSTANTLY in late pregnancy and I was always really paranoid about it, but he's 18 months now and all good. No problems after birth. Even now if he gets the giggles and laughs too much he will start hiccuping!

Flutterby8 · 20/12/2021 22:35

Hiccups seemed to be constant from about 30 weeks!! 4 times a day or more was the norm and midwife never seemed bothered!
Now shes here she still has the worst hiccups i have ever seen!
They happen at least 3 times a day and will often wake her up mid sleep! They dont seem to happen after feeding either.
Her poor little face when theyre happening is just so sad!
But its pretty normal, mention it to your midwife though if youre worried.

Ariela · 20/12/2021 23:43

My DD1 also had hiccups a lot. I remember one day I was in a board meeting, at about 8 months, and she had hiccups and was effectively bouncing on my bladder, so I excused myself to go to the loo.
When I got out of the loo, the entire boardroom was waiting out in the corridor - they thought I'd gone into labour!
