Been refused the booster at vaccination centre

Goopamz · 17/12/2021 13:29

Just been to try and get my booster at a vaccination centre and they refused to give it to me because I'm pregnant! They said the guidance has just changed and pregnant women aren't allowed It.

I was in total shock, phoned my midwife in tears worried about the jabs ive already had (double jabbed) but also worried I'm going to get COVID and be really poorly!! The midwife was fuming and said that it was total nonsense and they have got the guidance wrong. I'm booked in to the GP to have my booster next week now but still upset about the way they spoke to me and the delay with getting the booster.

The midwife is going to take it up with the centre as it's shocking they are turning away pregnant women who are obviously a vulnerable group.

Just wondered if anyone else has had this experience ?

Doesn't it depend on which vaccine it is?

I'm not pregnant, so not up to date with what can be given in pregnancy.

Teaandcrumpets95 · 17/12/2021 13:34

They are absolutely wrong, I had mine last night and the gp at the centre was lovely and supportive.
In fact, I'm pretty sure pregnant people have now been made a priority so they are very wrong and spreading dangerous misinformation!
It's great that your midwife is going to report the centre, could you book in somewhere else or go to a walk in if you'd rather get it sooner rather than later

Peaseblossum22 · 17/12/2021 13:35

As far as I understand it pregnancy has just be raised into the priority group . So they have got the advice the wrong way around

AwkwardPaws27 · 17/12/2021 13:41

That's awful, and completely incorrect.
I've just had mine (literally 30 mins ago) and apart from an extra leaflet there was no difference. The staff were really pleased I was having it and were lovely.
I really hope you can get an appointment at a different centre ASAP.

thingymaboob · 17/12/2021 13:44

This is incorrect information. RCOG are very clearly saying women should have it. Find another centre and report this to "pregnant then screwed"

Goopamz · 17/12/2021 13:59

Thanks everyone, I've booked in at the gp for Wednesday but obv fuming I have to wait longer for the booster when all the news etc is saying pregnant women are more vulnerable! Wondering whether to go to a walk in at the weekend but nervous of being turned away again

You are the only person I know who has been turned away. I don't understand how the vaccination centre staff could be so incompetent. Did you speak to the lead clinician down there?
SparklingLime · 17/12/2021 14:11

Pregnant women were added to the priority list yesterday: www.theguardian.com/world/2021/dec/16/jcvi-makes-pregnant-women-priority-group-for-covid-vaccination

As a pp said, these people are monitoring inadequate treatment like this: pregnantthenscrewed.com/

Aderyn21 · 17/12/2021 14:12

I'd phone the walk in clinic back and tell them you want them to fit you in today, given this was their cock up

BHX3000 · 17/12/2021 14:19

That’s very strange. Were they giving Pfizer or Moderna? Where I live they only give Pfizer to pregnant women, could the person in charge have taken it upon themselves to give advice based on other countries’ position on this? Which would still make it wrong.

ajandjjmum · 17/12/2021 14:25

We are vaccinating pregnant walk-ins - together with anyone else who comes along at the moment! Sorry you were made to feel rotten about it, and I would certainly flag up the situation with the Centre - although you may not be up for an argument.

Apart from those not qualifying for their jab yet, the only people we turn away are those who have flown in to the UK and not waited for their PCR result because they're 'as safe as anyone else, and feel fine'. Some idiots in this world.

Goopamz · 17/12/2021 14:31

So, i have an update after speaking to the midwife. She thinks what has happened is that the guidance changed yesterday to say pregnant women are in the vulnerable / priority group, but for whatever reason this centre misinterpreted that to mean if you're pregnant you can only have it If you are ALSO in another vulnerable group (!). Ridiculous!

When the jabbing person said it I did push back and said I don't think that's right, so the jabber said they would go check with the clinical person and after doing that came back to insist that yes I can't have the jab! At that point I was in shock and they were quite firm I had to leave so I didn't push it further. How could they get it so spectacularly wrong!!

Yes it is Pfizer at that centre. My midwife has escalated it and apparently all the centres in the Trust are getting a reminder that pregnant women can have it....

Well done - they need to read the guidance properly!

BonnieBo · 17/12/2021 17:45

@Goopamz I had exactly the same experience.

Told me I shouldn’t have it until at least 16 weeks pregnant and sent me away.

I now am unable to book an appointment, as the NHS system thinks I’ve already had it presumably.

No idea what to do. Can’t bear the thought of standing for hours in a queue.

Please call your midwife & get them to correct the vaccine centres. It's totally incorrect advice, I'm so sorry this has happened to you.
Your GP may be able to help rebook you?

SickAndTiredAgain · 17/12/2021 18:09

How annoying for you.
I thought I was going to get turned away today - I’m 16 weeks and they asked if I’d discussed getting it with my midwife, which I haven’t. Not for any particular reason, just that my 16 week appointment got cancelled and I didn’t really see the need to discuss it anyway. But anyway she got a bit funny about it, then said it was ok as I was in my second trimester.

Goopamz · 17/12/2021 18:14

I can't believe it's happening to other women too, I was hoping it was just a random one off with me. I have reported mine to pregnant then screwed, seems so wrong these centres are taking it upon themselves to decide the guidance

Mumsnut · 17/12/2021 18:17

We usher our pregnant ladies to the front of the queue ...

Booksandwine80 · 17/12/2021 18:20

@Teaandcrumpets95

“Pregnant people” ?!Hmm

Teaandcrumpets95 · 17/12/2021 18:24

@Booksandwine80

Yup! Last time I checked, I was indeed a person x

Of course, feel free to identify as you like ☺️ x

With the best will in the world, I doubt that is the case. They will be over-run and under immense pressure at the moment, trying to please everyone.

Doesn't alter the fact that they were wrong in your case and need to be corrected, but I am sure they are not deciding the guidance - just misinterpreting it!

ShakeTheDisease · 17/12/2021 21:34

I am sure they are not deciding the guidance - just misinterpreting it!

How is there any practical difference here? They've decided what it means and how to apply the guidance but they were wrong. Overruled a midwife in doing so, one of the people you might think would know.

As for trying to please everyone, well, not OP. They told her she had to leave!

Everyone can make mistakes but defending them on semantic grounds is weak.

ajandjjmum · 18/12/2021 14:56

@ShakeTheDisease The practical difference is that once they are corrected, they will - hopefully - work to the correct guidance. If they were deciding it, they wouldn't have to change anything.

mowglika · 18/12/2021 15:48

@Teaandcrumpets95 stop muddying the waters there’s no need for it. Someone who’s pregnant is a woman regardless of what gender they identify as. Ffs.

@BonnieBo call your GP and tell them you will find it hard to stand for hours at a walk in and can they help you rebook. I read your previous thread and had my booster today and didn’t mention I was pregnant in case something similar happened.

Teaandcrumpets95 · 18/12/2021 15:58

@mowglika I hope you have a very merry and relaxed Christmas 🎄 x
