COVID booster in 1st Trimester

Hi all,

I’m currently 6 weeks pregnant and debating when to have my Pfizer booster. I have read the research and now guidance is to have it at any stage during pregnancy, but I would like to know for women in their 1st trimestre, did they have the COVID vaccine and if everything went well. I’m just trying to find reassurance so that I have it soon rather than after my 1st trimester, with the omicron variety going around. Thank you so much!

I posted this same question 2 days ago and everyone responded to say it’s fine. I’m 5 weeks and had my booster today.

Disneymama111 · 16/12/2021 21:24

I’m 10 weeks pregnant and due my booster.

I have made the decision not to have it due to the minimal research on the effect to baby!

I will have it once I’ve given birth!
We’ve tried and tried for this baby I’m doing nothing that isn’t researched properly :)

NetflixAndSauvignonBlanc · 16/12/2021 21:37

I’m just 4 weeks and my booster is booked for just after Christmas. The vaccine has been given to millions of people worldwide, including pregnant women and has been declared safe. Covid on the other hand is proven to be very dangerous for pregnant women and their babies.

InTheNightWeWillWish · 16/12/2021 21:45

I had my first vaccine at 12 weeks, which I know is later than you are, I would have had it earlier but wasn’t called up until that point. I had my second vaccine at 21 weeks. Baby is now nearly 4 weeks and absolutely perfect.

Breastfeeding didn’t quite go to plan but I’m still trying to part breastfeed so that when I have my booster next week I can hopefully pass on antibodies.

This 100%

The vaccine has been researched properly. It's scary that people throw that around and make others fear things.
I had both vaccines whilst pregnant, got my second jab at 30 weeks and then caught Covid at 33 weeks. I'm SO grateful I had that jab because my symptoms were very minimal (sneezing only) whereas a friend who got it at the same time had to have their oxygen levels monitored and was close to being admitted

There is far more evidence that getting Covid during pregnancy is more dangerous for you and baby than getting the vaccine is

ShirleyPhallus · 16/12/2021 21:47

Yep, first trimester and had my booster

It has been deemed not to be harmful to pregnant women, whereas covid can be dangerous to pregnant women.

freshflowers2 · 16/12/2021 22:03

I had my second jab in the 1st trimester, about to get booster now in 3rd trimester.

Had no ill effects at all apart from a sore arm with my 2nd jab, what did annoy me was the nurse doing it ooh-ing and ahh-ing about how early in pregnancy I was (10 weeks at the time) and wasn't I worried? 🙄

Vaccines are extremely thoroughly researched. Yes this particular one has had less time than others, for obvious reasons, but the mechanisms are the same. Just get it done. Really not worth risking being admitted to hospital with Covid in pregnancy.

feliznavidad2 · 16/12/2021 22:44

I'm nearly 11 weeks and had my booster at 5 weeks (health care professional, hence getting it earlier.) No obvious issues so far.

Caass45 · 16/12/2021 23:19

I had my second dose at 9 weeks. The woman doing it did freak me put a little she qas like it's totally fine totally safe but most women wait until after 12 weeks. I went ahead anyway and I'm currently 25 weeks with a healthy baby girl and will be getting my booster in the new year when I have time off work incase we feel run down after

Caass45 · 16/12/2021 23:22

I should also say for me the research seemed to lead to it being perfectly safe and recommended for pregnant woman but the facts of how dangerous covid is to pregnant women is clear so that made my decision

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 16/12/2021 23:27

Had my first jab in first trimester, second jab in second trimester and going for my third jab tomorrow when I'm 31wks.
No issues so far. I can't imagine why anyone would risk not having the jabs.

EmJay19 · 16/12/2021 23:36

I was going to wait until about 14 weeks until it became clear how likely it was to catch covid from the new variant so I decided to go for it and had ut today at 10w

AgathaMystery · 16/12/2021 23:39

This is such a brilliant thread. Full of sensible women Flowers I’m a midwife currently specialising in Covid +ve women & today my caseload jumped from 12 to 24 in a matter of hours. Thank you for getting vaccinated xxx

Porridgeislife · 17/12/2021 02:52

I had my booster last week at 9 weeks. I was going to wait until second trimester but she suggested it straightaway & after consulting my husband I went for it. I’m so glad I did given the developments this week.

I had another scan yesterday which showed a very normal looking baby.

Porridgeislife · 17/12/2021 02:52

She being my midwife!

scott2609 · 17/12/2021 05:54

I had the second Moderna vaccine when I was nine weeks, I’m now in my third trimester and had my booster yesterday. I was absolutely fine- no side effects at all- and there have been no issues whatsoever with my baby.

It is so much riskier for you and the baby to not be fully protected against COVID.

CMcA21 · 17/12/2021 06:51

My friend who is a doctor recommended waiting until after 12 weeks as side effects of the booster could include a temperature which can sometimes (rarely) be associated with miscarriage.

If you had you’re other 2 fine I’d go for it, just make sure to take paracetamol before and after to reduce any chance of a temp.

I got my first jab on Tuesday due to being pregnant and putting it off but all the medical professionals are advising to get it and that’s enough for me. They’re medical professionals for a reason. It takes the pressure off too worrying about catching Covid constantly as I know I was!!

Caass45 · 17/12/2021 07:05

@AgathaMystery I just wanted to say thank you for doing what you do! 🥰

ksc912 · 17/12/2021 07:53

I had moderna this week and I am only 5 weeks. The evidence is showing it’s more of a risk to you and baby if you get Covid then having the vaccine. I personally felt having the booster before Christmas was people are mixing was the safer option than me waiting to have in new year when past first trimester.

ksc912 · 17/12/2021 07:54

I should have also said I had no real symptoms from my booster. So feel like the right decision made.

Mufflette · 17/12/2021 08:07

Also 4 weeks and getting my booster tomorrow. I'd rather deal with a little bit of vaccine than a big bit of Covid!

Moancup · 17/12/2021 08:10

I had my booster this week at four weeks. The woman doing it couldn’t understand why I was telling her (err, the leaflet tells me too…) as it’s so safe.

No side effects from the booster either.

mumofmunchkin · 17/12/2021 09:19

Not the booster, but I had my second vaccine dose at 7 weeks pregnant. I'm now nearly 29 weeks and all's good, and I just had my booster yesterday. I haven't seen a single reputable source give any evidence of any risk to pregnancy.

Fuzzyduck21 · 19/12/2021 11:02

I'm only 4 weeks and mines book in today and I have no idea what to do after suffering 2mc in the last 10 months. I would rather wait till after 12 weeks but equally don't want to get covid. I barely mix outside my immediate household and I don't go indoors anywhere nowadays however I have 2 young children and they could bring it home from school.

Whilst I haven't seen any evidence of a risk of the jab in the first trimester I also haven't seen evidence full stop other than 'real world data' which is effectively the same as saying 'well Sheila at number 5 was ok so you'll be too' isn't it?. I don't know if this is something they are even collecting data on. If anyone has seen any data I would love to see it as it would really help my decision. I feel we should be provided with more data rather than just having to trust people (I find it hard in pregnancy to trust healthcare professionals due to anxiety). Everyone I know, no exaggeration, who has had moderna booster has been very unwell afterwards. This also terrifies me. Hope someone can help ❤

SouthwestSis · 19/12/2021 11:23

@Fuzzyduck21 this new variant is so infectious that if you have kids in school you have very little chance of avoiding it for the next 8 weeks.

Here is a good Q&A including links to evidence
www.rcog.org.uk/en/guidelines-research-services/coronavirus-covid-19-pregnancy-and-womens-health/covid-19-vaccines-and-pregnancy/covid-19-vaccines-pregnancy-and-breastfeeding/

What you describe about "Sheila at number 5" would be anecdotes rather than data.
Observational studies are legitimate forms of evidence and with tens of thousands of women now having given birth to healthy babies having had covid vaccines in pregnancy, they help give more certainty that covid jabs are safe at ANY gestation in pregnancy.
Please go ahead and get your booster, 2 vaccines are not sufficient protection against omicron, and a booster will give you and your baby the best possible protection.
