Can I eat... craving all the stuff I'm not allowed

Really craving hot dogs and pâté and cocktails 😂 basically I want everything I'm not allowed to have.

Going to maybe get some mocktails for Christmas so I can have a 'drink' with the family. Is there any alternatives to pâté or hot dogs?

Why can't you have hotdogs? They're not on the list to avoid

baby2due · 15/12/2021 22:04

@dementedpixie - oh I thought it said somewhere that you can't have hot dogs when pregnant because of listeria and a preservative they contain called nitrate.

Nothing on the nhs website about it. Maybe just buy good quality ones

dementedpixie · 15/12/2021 22:07

And if you heat them you will kill bacteria

Thatsplentyjack · 15/12/2021 22:08

I ate pate while pregnan, with every pregnancy I'm sure. Had no idea it wasn't allowed while I was pregnant. They were all fine.

Careyy · 15/12/2021 22:08

You should read "Expecting Better" by Emily Oster.

dementedpixie · 15/12/2021 22:11

Think we get the Herta ones from the chill. They seem to have more meat than the tinned ones

dementedpixie · 15/12/2021 22:13

You were maybe reading American websites as they often warn against cold cooked meats and other things considered ok to eat in the UK

Pate is more about excess vitamin A than food poisoning although listeria could also be an issue

I'm 36 weeks with my third and have eaten whatever I fancied. Whether it be patê, medium rare steak

Totalwasteofpaper · 15/12/2021 22:29

I have eaten whatever I want bar offal.
Pate is a no because of nutritional content isn’t great for pregnant women.

Sushi, Costco hot dogs & various soft cheeses have all been consumed in great quantities…

Flogert · 15/12/2021 22:35

I have also eaten pate - as its based on od’ing on vit a, I have gone with the assumption that as long as I don’t eat my body weight of it in one sitting, but in moderation when I fancy it (eg as a starter at a nice restaurant, as a canape at xmas) my body can sort out the vit a much like it would any other ingredient.

Oh and I also eat soft cheese and drink alcohol on odd occasions with food. Oh and medium rare steak!

Holskey · 15/12/2021 22:36

Rare steak, blue cheese and other food-poisoning risks are one thing, but Pate is a problem because of the vitamin A and I really wouldn't touch it.

I've never heard about not eating hotdogs.

baby2due · 15/12/2021 22:43

Oh thanks ladies. I will be having a
Hot dog tomorrow then!

Nitrates are in a lot of processed meats - bacon, sausages, salami, chorizo etc. Generally speaking they aren’t brilliant for anyone and there is some advice that pregnant women should avoid them but I think that long as you’re not eating like 12 hot dogs a day every day for 9 months you’ll be ok. I’ve carried on eating all of those things so long as they are cooked.

I do miss pate though. An obstetrician friend told me that most of the dietary advice is based on the extreme end of caution and almost all of the “banned” things are actually absolutely fine almost all of the time (so there are risks but they are extremely small) but that she would recommend avoiding anything high in vitamin A and excessive fish intake (because of the mercury pollution).

balloonsintrees · 15/12/2021 23:55

Only things I kept down when last pregnant were cups of black full caf coffee and Brie. As I was so ill consultant told me just to eat whatever I could keep down.

NMC2022 · 16/12/2021 00:00

I don't have DC (this came up on active!) but if you like fish then tuna or mackerel pate? You can make it too
I have it with corn thins (like rice cakes) and cucumber

mumofmunchkin · 16/12/2021 08:26

Vitamin A is a fat soluble vitamin, meaning it's stored in the body's fat cells. Whereas too much of a water soluble vitamin will be wee'd out in your urine, too much vitamin A won't be, and too much vitamin A has been shown to be bad for an unborn baby. For this reason, I do take the pate advice seriously.

Eat hot dogs though, eat all the hot dogs.

Parma ham. I know you're not supposed to. But I can't help myself if it's in my fridge/

BabyFeb22 · 16/12/2021 08:41

I'm 30 weeks and have been having pate the whole way through pregnancy. I know it's on the 'don't eat' list but I'm of the thinking if I never got poorly off it when not pregnant I'm more than likely not going to whilst pregnant

dementedpixie · 16/12/2021 09:29

Its not about food poisoning with Pate. If its liver based it can contain too much vitamin A which can damage your baby.

You can make cured meats safer by freezing them for a few days before eating or by having them cooked e.g. on pizza
EnidFrighten · 16/12/2021 09:45

Mushroom pate. Bratwurst from Lidl. Non alc booze or just a sherry glass full.

CallMeNutribullet · 16/12/2021 10:21

I had pate a couple of times. They eat it in France during pregnancy. I had hyperemesis and the midwife told me to eat whatever I felt I could keep down

It's not about getting poorly. You wouldn't know if you'd caused damage. I'm sure your baby will be fine unless you've really overdone it, but you should probably stop now. Too much vitamin A is bad for babies.
