How To Use Stretch Mark Oils...?

MiracleBaby2022 · 03/12/2021 21:18

How does everyone else deal with applying stretch mark creams and oils twice a day? I mean, they're oily (!) and unless you wipe it off thoroughly before putting your clothes on you'll ruin your clothes... But wiping it off so soon after applying it surely doesn't give it time to really soften the skin. So I've been walking around in just my bra in the evenings strutting my oiled belly. Is that what everyone else is doing or is there something I'm missing?

In the morning I apply Palmers lotion, because it absorbs quickly. In the evening I massage the belly 2-3 minutes, then I usually would go lie on the bed and read with my pajama top unbuttoned for a while until it absorbs.

MrsTimRiggins · 03/12/2021 21:34

Basically as above, I’d whack the oil on in the evening and then lie and read/watch tv/scroll mindlessly through Instagram and I’d use more of a moisturiser in the morning and let it soak in while I did make up and hair.
I got a bundle from mama mio, and it included both the oil and the cream, which worked well!

BestZebbie · 03/12/2021 21:34

What Epli said…..but do the top of your legs too. I couldn’t see my upper thighs past the bump but got stretch marks there too (I have no idea how, it’s not like the baby was shoved down inside my legs) and the leg ones are much more obvious than the main belly ones which I oiled religiously.

MiracleBaby2022 · 03/12/2021 21:36

@Epli maybe I do love the one I'm using, I've got the Weleda Stretch Mark Massage Oil - but perhaps I should switch to something that absorbs quicker. At least for the mornings when I'm trying to get dressed...

Hate to break it to you, but they don’t work. Whether or not you get stretch marks is mostly genetic. The cream doesn’t penetrate the deep layer of skin which is where the tearing marks happen. I’m lucky and avoided any of them in pregnancy, so have my genes to thank for that. But unfortunately no amount of oil will help so I would just save yourself the hassle.

escapingthecity · 03/12/2021 21:39

Palmers Cocoa Butter is my standard moisturiser for after the shower. DH rubs Bio Oil on my bump every night before bed. Not had any stretch marks that I can see yet.

doadeer · 03/12/2021 21:40

I'm sorry to say but they don't do anything for stretch marks. Many many dermatologists have written about this.

doadeer · 03/12/2021 21:41

And this is from someone who was oiled up to boot and my stretch marks were horrific!

Tee20x · 03/12/2021 21:42

Yep defo genetic. Also hate to be the bearer of bad news but I thought I had escaped stretch marks - got them at 37 weeks!! A little red one appeared and then more and more. I could have cried honestly.

I'm now 11 months postpartum - and the scary thing is this - like PP I also got them on the tops of my thighs which I couldn't see. But also my vagina!! Who even knew that was a thing ?!

Discovered when I got my first wax - couldn't believe my eyes.

MiracleBaby2022 · 03/12/2021 22:06

Thanks everyone, I'm sure they won't do anything, but I will try regardless. I got stretch marks all over my hips when I was a fast growing teenager (and I was only a size 6 until I was in my 20s!). The big white marks are still there and I'm sort of desperate to do anything I can to avoid them. At least if I get them I can't say I didn't try.

Thanks for the heads up about thighs and - gosh - vagina!! I certainly never knew that!!

I got loads of stretch marks as a teenager and zero when pregnant despite doing absolutely nothing. I would say just use oil or cream if you actively enjoy applying it.

canyoutoleratethis · 03/12/2021 22:11

Yep, I was the same. Lots when I was a teenager, which I can still see on my hips as silver lines. But didn’t get a single one when pregnant and used no products. Hopefully that might give you some more hope OP, and if you enjoy using the oils then of course continue, but just don’t expect them to work. If you don’t get marks, it wasn’t because of the cream

MiracleBaby2022 · 03/12/2021 22:18

Oh that's good to know I'm not the only one with teenage stretch marks! Hopefully my teenage hips are no clue to my pregnancy marks either then. I do love using the oil and I like the idea of giving my baby a little massage in there at the same time, so it's just a sweet little ritual really.

I love weleda products, they smell and feel amazing but they can be a bit thick and greasy! Perhaps try something lighter?I just use the standard bio oil and I never have a problem with grease stains (as others say, they don't actually stop stretch marks but I'm hoping that they'll help my tummy with recovery after birth because it'll be nice and supple and happy to shrink back a bit sooner because it's been treated well, rather than dry and angry :) )

Wiltshire90 · 04/12/2021 05:35

I only got stretch marks when my tummy went down after the baby was born! They are hardly noticeable. I used Bio Oil once a day before bed and put a baggy t shirt over it. Like PPs said it's all genetics and luck anyway but we like to try to control it anyway Grin

Suzi888 · 04/12/2021 05:38

I used mama mio oil and a belly band and just embraced the greaseGrin.

I've tried a few and the Weleda is my favourite too OP! It's the only one that stopped the skin stretching discomfort and redness for me. I only apply it once a day, at night, and just walk around for a few minutes til it soaks in. 🤞 it does work, although having read PP's now, I'll be eagle eyed for in a couple more weeks in case the stretch marks arrive really late 😩

Eumy · 04/12/2021 08:33

So I’m aware that oils likely won’t stop stretch marks, but honestly I find it so soothing to rub in I love it. Also I get my DP to rub it which is lovely as they feel bonded with the bump!

I use the Kiel’s Crème de Corps body oil, as it’s the least greasy oil I’ve found - it rubs in nicely and smells so amazing!

Garman · 04/12/2021 08:41

The white ones you have from your teenage years are the end goal for stretch mark care, getting them to fade to white. I have some on my inner thighs from teenage growth spurts, I never applied any oil through 3 pregnancies and didn't get one stretchmark, it's completely down to genetics, your skin, and luck. The oils like Bio Oil can help then fade if used afterwards, they don't stop them forming.

Fet2021duejuly2022 · 04/12/2021 08:43

They don’t work, I oiled up religiously in my first pregnancy and was quite smug that I didn’t get any stretch marks whilst pregnant. Then the bastards appeared straight after birth. I won’t bother in this pregnancy

MiracleBaby2022 · 04/12/2021 16:11

@Evianontoast yes, let's hope you're right. Can't hurt treating the skin well!

@Wiltshire90 I've heard a few say they only got the stretch marks after birth, how odd, but as you say all we can do is try our best!

MiracleBaby2022 · 04/12/2021 16:15

@A1b2c3d4e5f6g7 ahh let's hope they don't! Keeping my fingers crossed for you 🤞🏼Yes, Weleda is lovely - plus it doesn't contain paraffinum liquidum, which is a petroleum based product!

MiracleBaby2022 · 04/12/2021 16:18

@Eumy yes me too, I find it soothing and a great way to bond with the bump! Will check out that Kiehls lotion - sounds good.

I popped into this thread to see if I could find advice to help DD15 who had a massive growth spurt this year and now has angry looking red stretch marks across her back. I was going to suggest bio oil or similar in the hope they might fade more quickly but sounds like once you have them it’s just a case of waiting until they fade?
