I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.
There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.
MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk
If you need help in obtaining medication, phone them on:
024 7638 2020
Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/topics/nausea-vomiting-in-pregnancy
I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.
It has been suggested that I add some practical tooth cleaning advice: a lot of sufferers find using a child's small toothbrush and strawberry toothpaste far less nauseating.
On my image of a pink castle: that is an image I use because when I was little, my family had a Snakes and Ladders board with an image on the last square of a pink castle in the clouds. As Hyperemesis is so like a grotesque version of Snakes and Ladders - eat a meal, go up a ladder, first thing in the morning bile run, down a snake - I have used the image of that pink castle on the last square of that Snakes and Ladders board as a metaphor for the happy end of Hyperemesis.
Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

@7Worfs thanks it helps to hear someone else say I need to put myself first. I'm going to ring the GP tomorrow and I need to go to the EPU for a prescription and then I have the midwife. Hopefully I'll be a bit more together by tomorrow night.

@LucindaE it's horrible. It seems to have settled down now that I've managed to eat a little bit. I was sick 7 times before I managed to keep anything down though. Can I add Vimto to your list? I found that really helpful last time and I've added it to our food order this time. Squash and ice lolly versions are both helpful.

ohCARP · 28/02/2022 21:29

@FateHasRedesignedMost that's exciting! Having an end in sight must help. I hope it all goes well 😊

7Worfs · 01/03/2022 11:08

@LucindaE I haven’t spoken to my GP on how to wean off Stemetil, I just thought to drop the evening one - so far (24h in) I’m just suffering hideous insomnia, which makes me so tired. We also co-sleep on demand with the toddler but it’s becoming unsustainable - we can’t get proper rest and I think DH will be putting an end to it soon, and there will be tears. Sad

My brain is constantly going into overdrive with what if scenarios - I’ve exhausted the more plausible ones and now worry about 2 years down the road which is ridiculous. That keeps me up at night.

ChloeHel · 01/03/2022 16:31

@7Worfs oh I’m right with you on this…DH and I co-sleep with our toddler too! We were going to start getting her in her own bed weeks back, but the HG has prevented it because I simply haven’t got the energy to try :( one positive is I do have lovely nap time cuddles with her so I’m not alone for 2 hours of the day haha.

The sickness was severe today, I have my first midwife appt next week but in all honesty I don’t know how on Earth I’m going to even get out of bed for it let alone actually drive to the surgery! So that is making me super anxious and hindering my sleep.

LucindaE · 01/03/2022 19:43

7Worfs and ChloeHel That sounds exhausting. Back in the mists of time, when my DD was a baby, they had 'sleep clinics' to teach older babies and toddlers to go to sleep on their own They weren't left to cry. You were allowed to go in and speak to them. Do they still have them? I suppose these were disrupted by the pandemic.
ohCARP I've added Vimto. Ignore the 'coke' part!
'Flat, full sugar coke, ice lollies, the juice of tinned fruit, Vimto, Lucozade, apple juice, Ribina, Dr Pepper, soda water, Elderflower water, tonic water, ice cubes, Iron Bru, lemonade, lemon squash, orange squash, orange juice (if not too acid), fizzy orange, 7Up, isotonic drinks, sips of chocolate milkshake (maybe soya), fizzy water, apple juice, Robinson's fruit drinks, Rubicon sparkling mango drink , raspberry Lucozade sport and frozen ice cubes of flat Lucozade sport. Also, pink lemonade , cloudy lemonade and Sprite. Foods of a sort include tinned fruit, cuppa soup, nibbles of crisps and chips, cheap ice cream, Scotch pancakes, bagels and biscuits, potato smileys, minature salty Yorkshire Puddings , dry cereals and slices of melon and mango. Protein drinks have also been mentioned.'

@ChloeHel I had the same dilemma today and in the end my mum drove me and sat with my toddler in the car. Being out of the house actually made me feel a bit better and the midwife was nice and made me smile. Have you got anyone who can help you? Or maybe a taxi?

I couldn't get through to my GP for tablets but I have some left over that are in date so the midwife said take them as directed on the label from last time and if I can't get through to the GP she will sort another prescription for me so that's good. I called 42 times today before I gave up.

The spinning has stopped for the most part today but it does still take me by surprise. I took my first sickness tablet this evening and then fell asleep for a few hours. It felt a bit like fast forwarding time which I'm going to take as a positive.

I'm struggling with the thought of work tomorrow. I feel terrible but I also feel like I should try and go in because I can't get out of my head that other people have it worse (which I know is stupid). It's an hour away so it's probably not safe for me to drive. I might give the tablets time to work and try again next week.

@LucindaE I did actually try a sip of coke today just to get some sugar in me and I can confirm it was a bad idea 🙈 it's usually my favourite drink so that's sad. Ah well 🥴

Melleebacca · 02/03/2022 03:31

@ohCARP I could never drive that far in any of my pregnancies until the 3rd trimester. The sheer fatigue from having to concentrate always made my sickness worse. I barely managed the 20mins each way while pregnant this time around. And only because I sucked on peppermints non-stop.

@7worfs we sort of co-slept with our kids. I would lie with them until they went to sleep, and then if then one of us would get up to them in the night when they wanted cuddles. Most of the time Hubby would fall asleep with them in their bed, which worked well.

@ChloeHel I always got anxious about leaving the house when I was in the early stages. I travelled with a bucket in the passenger seat, and made sure I had plenty of time for stops if required.

PopGoesBang · 02/03/2022 07:29

Hi all.
I've been recovering from half term and a weekend of doing too much 🙈
So glad I WFH and don't have to worry about journeys there and back. You lot that do I take my hat off to you.

Sending a wave to all and hope today is kind.

Starbeach · 02/03/2022 08:26

@abbs1 massive congratulations hope all is well.

I’m 24+4 today and I thought either my hg was getting better or the tablets were working dropped down to one a day a couple of weeks ago but this week oh my work has it flared up with avengence. I wfh so not so bad but I’m extremely tired with it too Fell asleep in front of my laptop yesterday. I can’t afford to be off work at the moment as my pay has gone down to half as I had so much time off at the start. Has anyone else’s flared back up after a few weeks of 2-3 times a day to full blown roulette of food again 😭

Sunnierdays7 · 02/03/2022 13:25

Hi ladies can I please join. Just got my bfp. Overwhelmed but scared. Previous hg sufferer x 2. I know I have 2 weeks until it comes for me. Any new recommendations or meds anyone can recommend. Xx

Starbeach · 02/03/2022 13:51

@Sunnierdays7 Only thing that has worked for me is ondansetron but I wouldn’t take until after 12 weeks. Congratulations and Good luck I’m not sure I can do this again. Can I ask how you are brave enough to go through it again? Only both me and my other half both want at least 2 if possible.

Melleebacca · 02/03/2022 16:40

@Sunnierdays7 I took ondansetron and cyclizine 3 times a day from as soon as I found out (nausea is my first symptom). I only vomited daily from 5wks to 13wks this time around. Also kept my hydration levels up with Hydralyte ice blocks. I’m now almost 27wks and down to just one ondansetron tab a day.

@Starbeach you forget how bad it is until you’re reliving it again. Plus, the kids are worth it. I talked to many family members who regretted not having more kids because of different circumstances, and I didn’t want HG being the illness that dictates my family size (even though I know for many it has). Our 2 daughters have always been best friends from the moment the second one was born, and they barely noticed I was sick this time around as they had each other.
Also, yes, I dropped my last cyclizine dose on Sunday and I’ve had a really rough week with nausea. I’m also waking really early to pee and unable to get back to sleep, so the fatigue is intense.

PopGoesBang · 02/03/2022 16:54

@Starbeach @Melleebacca is right you do forget - in an odd way there is a lot about pregnancy, birth and child rearing you 'forget'. Plus I was ever hopeful I wouldn't suffer this time.
I waited 9 years 🤣 I never thought I'd do it all again and when it became a possibility I decided it was worth the risk (I question that choice on bad days!)

LucindaE · 02/03/2022 21:25

Sunnierdays7 Wecome. As you are a twice over vetean, you certainly don't need my advice about coke, ice lollies, the juice of tinned fruit, kesostix or anti acids. You've already had great advice. A new drug is Xonvea, which has helped many on here.
ohCARP You mustn't be hard on yourself because it's even worse for some others.
Waves to Melleebacca PopGoesBang and everyone.

Sunnierdays7 Sorry, that is meant to be 'veteran'.
Starbeach I meant to suggest, might it be one of the dreaded hormonal surges?

Sunnierdays7 · 03/03/2022 07:25

Thank you everyone 😊
Can you get Xonvea on nhs ? X

ChloeHel · 03/03/2022 09:16

@Sunnierdays7 you can indeed :) I’m currently taking it after trying 3 others! It does ease off the actual vomiting and nausea but it doesn’t completely stop it. I don’t think anything does tbh!

I’m still bed bound. It’s the only time I don’t feel nauseous. As soon as I stand up or even go to the toilet the instant nausea hits and I’m sick.

@ohCARP luckily my husband can probably take me, depending what time DD gets up though! It’s an early morning appt and she’s a late sleeper. I haven’t left the house now for 2 weeks so the thought of it even makes me feel sick. Ugh I hate this so much!

BuffyFanForever · 03/03/2022 09:43

Hi All, checking back in, it’s been a while. I had a horrible few weeks then a better few weeks and this week has been horrible again. Currently number 18 in the line for the drs to get my prescription which they won’t give online “because we can’t do that when you’re pregnant” and can’t do without me wasting yet another drs appointment to explain the same thing every single time. We’re moving house next week too and I’m sure the stress is making it all worse. Having the 1 year olds going mental also isn’t helping. How is everyone else doing?

Starbeach · 03/03/2022 09:45

@BuffyFanForever you sound like you got it tough right now I don’t know what else to say other that hopefully the move will go smoothly with everyone else doing everything obviously. Xx

Sunnierdays7 · 03/03/2022 09:51

Thank you so much. 😊
Would people recommend Xonvea over Zofran? Or both, I’m such a weird place because at 42 and prev history of loss & hg I’m either thinking if I get to 6 weeks it will be a blessing but then hg will hit or I may lose baby before 6 then I’ll be heartbroken. Just want ti be happy and excited x

BuffyFanForever · 03/03/2022 11:03

@Starbeach thanks. Hopefully the move will be ok in the end, it’s just a lot isn’t it!

@Sunnierdays7 wishing you the best have tried those meds but omperazole, cyclizine and ondanestron have helped me a lot this time around x

Sunnierdays7 · 03/03/2022 12:12

Pleased to hear that. When did you start taking ? I’ve been told earlier the better. X

ChloeHel · 03/03/2022 12:52

Those of you taking Ondansentron, does it stop your N&V or just calm it down?

I’m thinking of switching from xonvea to ondansentron in a few weeks. Honestly the xonvea must be doing something because I can eat two meals a day and I’d say atleast half of each meal stays down and I’m able to drink over 1l of fluids daily! Pre Xonvea I couldn’t do either. But as soon as I get out of bed the nausea hits me like a ton of bricks and I’m heaving! I just want to be able to get out of the house, or even go downstairs!

Wondering if it’s worth the ondansetron switch or to just suffice :(

Starbeach · 03/03/2022 13:11

@ChloeHel I’m in ondansetron it’s calmed my n&v down but in the evenings I’m still bad xx

Waddlegoose · 03/03/2022 13:44

Any recommendations on the mental side? I have spoken to the pregnancy sickness group.

I just keep thinking I’m not even 6 weeks this is going to get worse and I’m not sure I can do it. I’m almost having fantasies around miscarriage so the nausea will stop.

Im hardly being a parent to my current children and feel so useless.
