C Section - how long in hospital?

I'm curious as chances are I'll have one and I HATE hospitals so need to prepare myself for how long I'll be in - what's the norm?!

Emergency C section 6am Monday and home at 6pm Tuesday. Would have been a few hours earlier but we couldn't find any staff.

I had to prove I could urinate by myself and they measured the urine produced. If it wasn't enough, I'd have had to stay longer.

Also, DS hadn't urinated so they wanted to keep him in until he had but thankfully they took pity on us and let us go.

DS1 I was in for 3 days and DS2 I was out after 21 hours.

TheCraicDealer · 12/11/2021 23:58

Had DD by EMCS at 7pm on the Saturday and was out by 1pm on the Monday. That was just before Covid kicked off.

The best thing that happened to me was the no-nonsense auxilery who told me "if you want to get out of here you have to be up and about, moving, and passing urine.". I have a tendancy to malinger (don't tell DH) but that got me out of my chair like a whippet.

You need to pass a certain amount of urine so bring your own water bottle with the straw through it that you can sip away whilst reclining or lying down. Keep on top of your pain relief (take or request it before you feel the pain ramping up, don't wait for the last lot to wear off) and this will make getting and staying mobile so much easier.

I was in for 22hrs post section. 27hrs in total as went straight there as soon as my waters broke.

whoknew23 · 13/11/2021 02:16

I had complications, emcs Monday morning and out Wednesday night. They wanted to keep me in an extra night to monitor my BP but there was no way I was staying.

2021mumma · 13/11/2021 02:46

First baby I was in for 3 days and second 24 hours . As pp have said drink loads- I took the robinsons mini squash bottles and just kept drinking/passing urine.

Lobster5 · 13/11/2021 02:47

I think two nights if you are recovering well.

kikisparks · 13/11/2021 02:54

2 days for me after EMCS.

Rno3gfr · 13/11/2021 03:02

I think it really depends on whether it’s planned or not. Obviously, a lot of planned c-sections go without the medical issues of non-planned. Mine was an emergency and they kept me in for 3 days but that wa side to issues with my kidneys.

Rnm62 · 13/11/2021 03:28

I had one on Monday - was discharged 24 hours later. Same with my first last year.

N0va · 13/11/2021 03:54

I just had an emergency (semi elective, decided the night before) c section and was discharged from hospital 24 hours from when the surgery started. I had to shower and mobilise 6 hours after and pass 400ml of urine after catheter was removed Smile

Bubbles1st · 13/11/2021 04:25

23.5 hours.... could have done with a bit longer but DS was on neonatal and they wanted me to be able to stay with him in the family suite. I desperately needed transitional care in hindsight though!

elp30 · 13/11/2021 04:47

Wow. That's changed significantly since I had my two c-sections in '97 & '01. They were both straightforward with no complications and I stayed five days with both. I remember really pleading to go home on the fourth day with the second because of my two other children but I was told four days was too soon to be released. Less than 24 hours seems drastic.

romdowa · 13/11/2021 05:00

They wanted me to stay 4 days, I stayed 2 nights and asked to be discharged. I was up and about , I passed the required amount of urine , I had opened my bowels and my blood pressure was fine. Nurses kicked up a stink but the doctor was happy to let me home as she knew I'd recover better at home and not in the noisy, roasting and uncomfortable hospital.

Carbis · 13/11/2021 05:20

2 nights for my first, 1 for my second.

With my first, I wanted a lot of help with feeding so was content to stay in longer to make sure I was doing ok.

With my second, I had the section at 9pm and first thing in the morning asked the midwife what I needed to do to get home. Things pps have mentioned like me and baby passing urine, baby checks, Dr doing the paperwork, having my latch checked.

Raggeo · 13/11/2021 06:04

I didn't have a csection but there were 3 ladies on the ward with me who did. They were all discharged the next day, so just less than or just more than 24hrs after depending on when staff were available to complete the discharges. The assumption seemed to be that the majority would be discharged next day. Like PP have said it's important to be mobile ASAP and pass urine. Might also depend if breast feeding or not. I know a couple of my friends have stayed 2 days in hospital to help get bf established.

orangejuicer · 13/11/2021 06:12

2 nights, pre COVID.

TwittleBee · 13/11/2021 06:21

I was ubder the care of the postnatal ward for 12 hours with DS2 and 1 week with DS3.

So I guess it just depends how it goes.

Best of luck

Jabvribt · 13/11/2021 06:31

I had my baby at 3pm on a Monday elective c section and went home at 12 on the Wednesday but if I’d had him earlier in the day I could have gone home after one night. It also depends on feeding being established and both of you being well though so you never really know

WeRTheOnesWeHaveBeenWaitingFor · 13/11/2021 06:34

48 hours and 24 hours. Drink lots, get up and move around and eat protein.

bluechameleon · 13/11/2021 06:38

I was in for two nights both times, one EMCS and one ELCS. With DS1 the midwife just laughed when I asked about going home after one night (as my NCT classes had led me to believe was normal). With DS2 some people on my ward went home sooner but DS2 wasn't feeding so we stayed until I could latch him on.

YerAWizardHarry · 13/11/2021 06:41

I had an emergency c section 6pm on a Tuesday and got out tea time Thursday

daisyducky · 13/11/2021 06:59

1 night.

They knew I wanted out as had a toddler at home so put me on fast track as the CS went well. I had to empty my own catheter. I was shocked at first but if it meant getting out off I went and did it.

Went in at 7am Saturday, CS was 10am, home Sunday at 4pm but it would have been earlier had there not been only one pharmacist to make up the entire hospitals medication.

Good luck

shivbo2014 · 13/11/2021 07:00

Had baby at 10.30am was home next day about 4pm.

Sunbeams09 · 13/11/2021 07:07

With both my c sections I was signed off after 24 hours for discharge. Left shortly after with DC1 but with DC2 I had to stay in for another 3 days due to needing jaundice treatment… so bear in mind it’s not just you that could keep you in hospital, the baby needs to be signed off too!
