I'm curious as chances are I'll have one and I HATE hospitals so need to prepare myself for how long I'll be in - what's the norm?!

DD1 was 48 hours but only because she was sick and it was bright Green so they was worried. Everything was fine though.

DD2 was around 26ish hours, they wasn't rushing to get me home but everyone who came in I was asking if I could go yet Grin

Don't let them push you out if you're not feeling 100% confident OP x

Elective section in 2016, arrived at hospital at 8am Monday morning, got all prepared and gowned up etc, DD delivered at midday, would have been earlier but there was an emergency. Started to get feeling back in my legs by the evening but didn't stand up till the next morning, once I'd stood up and was pottering about I stayed in for another night so they could keep on eye on my urine output and was home safe and sound by the Wednesday afternoon.

The first night is rough, mostly because it's warm in the ward and if your section happened later in the day you can't shuffle yourself about, I had to rely on the nurses that night because I couldn't move, they were great. The next night I was able to get myself up and about so was much better.

The sooner you get up and get moving the better, take the painkillers, seriously, it's better to take them before you need them than to wait until it hurts. Good luck!

Had my section at 10am Monday. They talked about me going home Tuesday lunch time but I was sick a couple of times on Tuesday morning so they wanted me to stay another night. I cried at the thought of staying on the ward again so I went home at 6pm Tuesday!

Baby born 11am home the following day 3pm. Planned elective section

SquigglePigs · 13/11/2021 08:05

Baby was born at 10am Tuesday. Initial plan was to go home Wednesday afternoon but I had a minor complication so ended up in til Friday lunchtime.

Ughmaybenot · 13/11/2021 08:09

Had one last Friday. Baby was born at 12:30pm on the Friday and I was discharged at 10:30am on the Sunday. So just under 48hours. They knew I didn’t really want to hang about and I would’ve been discharged on the Saturday at around the same time but baby had a couple of minor issues the midwives wanted to see resolved before we left.

RussianSpy101 · 13/11/2021 08:15

I’ve had 3 and was in overnight for all of them. All were born before 4pm and I’ve always been home for lunchtime the following day.

wasthataburp · 13/11/2021 08:17

Less than 24 hrs

Clevs · 13/11/2021 08:22

Emergency C-section with baby born at 1639 on the Monday, discharged 2pm on Wednesday.

I had Group B Strep so baby had to be monitored for a bit longer.

@elp30

Wow. That's changed significantly since I had my two c-sections in '97 & '01. They were both straightforward with no complications and I stayed five days with both. I remember really pleading to go home on the fourth day with the second because of my two other children but I was told four days was too soon to be released. Less than 24 hours seems drastic.
Think this was where my head was so I'm so happy it's changed!!

No I won't but what I don't want is the opposite where they make me stay and I want to go

Obviously if the baby has problems I will understand I may need to but I just want out if I'm able

C section 5pm Monday and out 11pm Tuesday. Had to really push for that though.

imnotthatlucky · 14/11/2021 07:23

Emcs here - 5 days.

VAM24 · 14/11/2021 07:31

2 nights. I was fine to be discharged after 1 night but they found a small issue with my baby's heart so kept us in another night to do some more checks the following day. All was fine 😊

The post natal ward wasn't much fun so I'm glad it was quick - we were only allowed 1 hour of visiting due to Covid so was quite lonely. I think most places have relaxed the rules a bit now so hopefully you can have someone with you most of the time!

Youvegotafriendinme · 14/11/2021 07:34

DS1 section on the Monday 12:30am out on the Thursday night but under GA and serious complications.
DD2 section at 2am on the Sunday and out at 5pm on the Monday. Emcs with DD spending the time in Scubu.

WakeUpLockie · 14/11/2021 07:36

I had an elective and was in for 2 nights as I lost 50% of my blood. Was ready to leave after 1 day though, went mad from boredom!

RidingMyBike · 14/11/2021 08:25

It really depends on how it goes, and there are no guarantees even if it isn't a CS. I had a 'standard vaginal delivery' but that meant 8 nights in hospital - 1 in antenatal, 1 on labour ward, 3 hellish nights on postnatal, 2 nights home, readmitted for another 3 nights.

Whereas there were women who'd had straightforward CS going home after less than a day on postnatal.

SmallProvincial · 14/11/2021 08:28

EMCS Monday 5am
Released Tuesday 12noon.

Get up, keep moving (gently). Take poo softeners as soon as medical advice allows. That's my main advice.

SmallProvincial · 14/11/2021 08:29

Also many hospitals have private rooms for approx £120 p/n subject to availability. Best £120 I ever spent.

Cruz86 · 14/11/2021 08:30

Baby was born at 00.44 on the Thursday morning and I was out at 3pm on the Friday. It would've been earlier but I had some blood pressure issues that they wanted to keep an eye on. And that was EMCS.

SmallProvincial · 14/11/2021 08:33

Like PP I also had to push for discharge, about 2 hours after the birth I just asked "what do I have to do to go home?"

And the nurse told me that 24hours obs would be enough if I could make up the blood loss (no idea how they tested that, but I lost 800ml blood during the section, so enough to notice but not enough for a transfusion).

Chelyanne · 14/11/2021 10:17

1st was elcs with breech twins, went well and only 1 night in hospital.
2nd went in to labour the day before my elcs booking with big singleton. I had over 20hrs labour before they got me in to surgery, got scar rupture and lost a lot of blood so felt shocking. 1st attempts to remove catheter I couldn't wee so it had to go back in, had 3 nights in hospital. 2nd attempt to remove was successful, if it hadn't they would have sent me home with a catheter and had me in a week later for removal.

Chelyanne · 14/11/2021 10:18

Blood loss with twins was 1ltr, with singleton was 1.6ltr
