Private room for after birth? Cost?

uglynakedguy0808 · 12/11/2021 19:28

I've heard you can pay for a private room after you've given birth, I've heard from one person it costs about £30 and another that it costs £400 Shock I know every hospital will be different but which one is most likely to be correct?

In the hundreds at my hospital but you will get booted out if someone else needs it (eg someone with covid)

WakeUpLockie · 12/11/2021 19:33

Depends, our hosp was about £450 I think. I’m not sure if it was worth it as while the walls were very appreciated, you can’t flag a MW down, you’re easily ignored (you have a buzzer but if they’re busy that’s it and I couldn’t get out of bed to find anyone), and they missed me off a drug round because I was out of the way.

astoundedgoat · 12/11/2021 19:37

I think it was £200 and £350 or something for the family room, with the big bed, but in the end, the family room was occupied and we were put in the private room anyway because of needing a bili-light and the little terrarium they use for them.

BUT for round two, I went home a couple of hours after the birth and it was amazing. My advice is to get out of there as fast as you can. You'll sleep so much better in your own bed.

SummerHouse · 12/11/2021 19:41

I think £200 ish. I had one for free. Was in for six days with a third degree tear and a non breastfeeding baby and they took pity on me. In hindsight I didn't need to be there at all. But it was heaven.

uglynakedguy0808 · 12/11/2021 19:41

Thanks for all your replies. I'm having an ELCS so I don't think £300/night is going to be affordable as I'll most likely be in a couple of nights, just wanted to find out roughly how much it was, thank you!

They aren't available at the moment in most Trusts as they're needed for Covid outstanding/covid pos women.

sageandbasil · 12/11/2021 19:49

It's about £150 here in Bristol I've been told. I'm hoping to get one ive heard the labour wards are hell

stalkersaga · 12/11/2021 19:54

Massively depends if it's an actual private ward, or just a private room on the NHS ward which is quite likely not to be available when push comes to shove. Former likely to be at least £4-500, latter could be about £100 if available.

TurnUpTurnip · 12/11/2021 19:55

Won’t be £30 everyone would want one then

SusieSusieSoo · 12/11/2021 20:01

In Leeds 9 yrs ago it was free of there was a room available

mummyh2016 · 12/11/2021 20:06

You may not necessarily be allowed a private room if you're having an ELCS anyway, a lot of hospitals put those patients on a ward as it's easier to keep an eye on them.

veryouting2021 · 12/11/2021 20:18

In our hospital after a c section you're kept in the ward on night one so they can keep an eye on you.

I had an ELCS with DS2 and was only in that one night then went home.

DS1 was an EMCS and after the first night they moved me into a private room as he was sick and on IV antibiotics.

There was an option to pay something like £30/night but I've never known anyone do it - Sod's law says the ones who planned to were bumped by medical need.

WeDontTalkAboutLove · 12/11/2021 20:26

Don't assume you will be in for several nights - I think most hospitals only plan for a one night stay after a ELCS!
I left less than 24 hours after mine although that was by choice: second baby and actually found ELCS recovery far easier than my traumatic vaginal birth.
I would agree that being on the ward has some perks. I personally found the HCS and midwife presence very reassuring.
Nothing better than your own bed though!

Ohhhhmothermayi · 12/11/2021 20:27

I paid £5 p/h, capped at £60. It was 100% worth it

CorpusCallosum · 12/11/2021 20:30

Ours told you they charged but never sent anyone the bill. I was in 5 nights, I was a mess and the privacy was essential for me - I'd have paid if they asked!

GuidingSpirit · 12/11/2021 20:30

South London and I think our hospital was going to be around £150? But like others have said they were mostly used for either covid + patients, or mums with babies in the NICU. I was given one for my 5 night stay because my baby was in NICU after developing sepsis.

FriedasCarLoad · 12/11/2021 20:31

I was in a private room for a few nights after an EMCS. They took pity on me because of PTSD and let me have the room for free and let my husband stay (and this was last summer).

I got plenty of attention and help when I needed it. It was such a help.

DazedandConfused135 · 12/11/2021 20:40

I had a private room for free for 5 nights. Had a very traumatic time though and LO was in SCBU so I think it was to keep me from being with the other mums and babies and getting myself more upset.
I think it was around the £400 mark for a private room but priority is given to the mums who need it at the time.
With my first I was on a normal ward - couldn't afford £400 Grin
To be honest given a choice there isn't much difference between the 2 so I wouldn't pay that much money for some walls instead of a curtain Wink

20viona · 12/11/2021 20:42

It's £80 here in staffordshire but I got one anyway without paying so that was nice! Just depends what's free on the day.

WalkingOnSonshine · 12/11/2021 20:44

I gave birth last December & I remember hearing two women ask if they could have a private room, but since March 2020, they had been kept separate for women who test positive with COVID.

I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s the same everywhere still currently - it’s still the same at our local hospital.

Buffyfan26 · 12/11/2021 20:47

I had a private room after an emergency c section. They have to keep you on the ward for the first night and then I was moved to a different ward. Then kept in for various medical issues for about another 6 nights so I asked a consultant for a private room as I couldn’t bear the ward noise. Was happy to pay but they gave it to me for free as I was very unwell. Would have been about £150 a night!

mnahmnah · 12/11/2021 20:50

I had private en suite room after both my births. Not pre-booked, free. Standard at my hospital as long as one is free. They put you on a ward if you have a C-section or complications, but if it was straight-forward, you get a private room

Emmab321 · 12/11/2021 20:59

It’s £75 at the hospital I’m at

ree348 · 12/11/2021 21:05

Was between £200-£300 per night in the NHS hospital I was at. Cost depended on size of room / if room was shared bathroom with another room.

They don't reserve rooms too, if you're in the hospital and request one and there's one available then they give you it.

Also if everything goes well with Elective c sections they normally just keep you in for one night providing all your and baby's stats are fine.

Thissucksmonkeynuts · 12/11/2021 21:12

I had single room both times, not sure how either time, both were emcs, but no charge. The second time there simply weren't enough staff and me and ds would have died if either of us had got poorly, we weren't checked on and I wasn't given my meds for 8 hours over night.
