Private room for after birth? Cost?

I've heard you can pay for a private room after you've given birth, I've heard from one person it costs about £30 and another that it costs £400 Shock I know every hospital will be different but which one is most likely to be correct?

Ours weren't up for sale. I was desperate for one and still bitter about it. I was in there for fucking ever and the lack of sleep sent me a bit crazy and then they tried to suggest I had PP depression but actually I just wanted to SLEEP.

I was absolutely fine when I got home Smile good luck!

To be honest I work in a hospital and we aren't allowed to take money for private rooms in maternity or anywhere else there is no mechanism in place to take payments so I'd be very wary handing "cash" over
It's luck of the draw but as people say atm people with Covid or MRSA or if they're end of life or in maternity have a still birth or baby very poorly - the rooms are kept for them

I think we paid £180 per night or thereabouts (July 2020), I was in for four nights and it was worth every penny

Might sound a bit silly, but I was grateful being with other mums when I'd had my baby.

I was in a private room for some of our hospital stay, as my daughter was quite unwell. My husband wasn't allowed to visit because of the risk of covid.

Nights in the ward with the other mums was so much better for me. I had another mum I spoke to when I thought I might fall asleep whilst feeding my baby as I was so tired.

It was noisy, but you don't sleep well after having a baby anyway, as you have your ears open all the time for the baby.

Best of luck xx

I’ve had 4 kids and hated the ward, never spoke to any of the other women and nor did any of them speak to each other, kept my curtain shut the whole time I was there 😬

We got put in a private room on the second night I was in and to be honest, I wasn’t really sure why but happy to have one with en suite! It was still really noisy though. I also had a private room on the antenatal ward for my two day induction as well so I guess I was just lucky!

I paid £240 a night in Buckinghamshire. Extortionate but I just needed privacy and my own space. It was first come first served. I also thought it would mean my husband could stay with me but that was a no, thanks Covid.

It depends what you mean by private room, I paid for a private room in the private ward in queen charlottes in Dec 2019 I think from memory it was about 600 for 2 nights - I could be wrong on the prices it was almost 2 years ago! If you contact your hospital they will tell you. But there are also private rooms in the public ward but they are usually kept for women who’s babies aren’t well or twin pregnancies and from what I read on here at the time it’s something like 30 a night.

Moonbabysmum · 12/11/2021 23:25

About 80 here

Chezrone · 13/11/2021 08:14

About 150 / night at my large sourh eastern/ greater London hospital- but as above none available. The ward is somewhat more bearable as no partners staying over. Push for your discharge from the get go if you are ok, I was fine as was baby but took a day ans a half to get out as no staff to perform discharge tests Hmm

I asked the hospital midwife about this on Thursday and she said that they're being used for COVID patients so unless you're very lucky they won't have any available to pay for and you just have to ask on the day. Ours is £200. They also like to keep c-section patients on the ward.

HalloweenScrooge · 13/11/2021 12:49

I had a private room after DC1. It was very much needed as he was very poorly in NICU and I was in a bad way. But it was actually also very lonely. And a complete nightmare to get hold of a midwife. I don’t really think people should be able to pay for private rooms, should just come down to need

T0rt0ise · 13/11/2021 18:35

@HalloweenScrooge it does come down to need - if anyone needs one they're not available to be paid for and you get kicked out if your paying an someone then needs them Smile

Daisydolly1986 · 13/11/2021 18:39

We paid £100. But you are isolated, which after a ceserean is not good. My buzzer kept falling off the bed, so I was well and truly stuck. I used my mobile to phone through to the triage department in the end, which they did not appreciate 😣

Also, I was in hospital during lockdown so midwives very much (had to?) stayed clear of patients.
