Winter maternity coat advice

Hi everyone,

I’m due end of March with DC2 and am wondering what to do about a coat.

Was going to buy a maternity coat I can’t seem to find any that are warm and waterproof and I’m going to be doing the nursery run & standing around in the playground with DC1. What’s everyone else doing for coats?

I was thinking of getting a second hand warm waterproof one a couple of sizes bigger but will that just look ridiculous?

I was in your position this time last year. I bought a 2nd hand one off ebay which got me through the cold, snowy winter. Really good condition for a good price (£5.50 plus postage)

firstimemamma · 22/10/2021 16:40

I'm due mid March. I've seen some on jo jo and new look but the thought of spending £50 on a coat I won't wear for long makes me sad so I'm stuffing myself into my regular coat for as long as I can for now!

GuidingSpirit · 22/10/2021 16:44

Do you have a budget? I have the standard seasalt plant hunter which is so warm and waterproof. I bought it 3 weeks before finding out i was expecting DD 🤦🏻‍♀️. But they do a maternity version with a panel that zips out so you can wear it after pregnancy. So if you'd wear it anyway, then worth considering. Worth waiting for a sale though.

firstimemamma · 22/10/2021 16:44

@husbandcallsmepickle there are some great ones on eBay, thank you!

womaninatightspot · 22/10/2021 16:44

Some genius now sells zip on jacket expanders for maternity. They are 30 quid but cheaper than a new coat.

I don’t have a budget exactly but would prefer not to spend over £50.
I did see the seasalt one but I already have a really good warm waterproof coat so wouldn’t use it after.

I’ll have a look at the extra panel, that could be a good idea if they do a warm one.

For those who’ve gone for a non-maternity coat - how many sizes did you go up to see you through your pregnancy?

I got mine at Asda, I refused to buy an expensive one for couple months.
First one I sized up one size then I had to get another which was 2 sizes up

randomsabreuse · 22/10/2021 17:20

Zip us in Panel. I got one of the early ones in a softshell material. Check zip type on your coat. Also works if you find a sling works for you - zip baby in sling in the coat.

I have this one from last year, comfy and warm has a draw string inside to so you can make it a small/big as you like /as bump grows. Also using now when out with baby in the sling.

I also had a ski jacket from Mountain ware house and just sized up, they always have a sale on so think I picked two up for £50 ( look for discount codes online)

9monthson9monthsoff · 22/10/2021 20:13

I got mine from asda last year, and am wearing it again now without the extra panel! Was about £25 I think and lovely and warm, and stands up in a shower.

Ameteurmum · 22/10/2021 20:53

I’m due in December and wouldn’t pay for a maternity coat and bought a size 18 from primark. I look like an absolute twat because it’s massive all over 🙈

rk47 · 23/10/2021 08:30

@Ameteurmum that’s what I was wondering - if it’ll just be massive everywhere and I’ll look like I’m wearing a tent.

Thinking maybe to get a second hand maternity one or the Asda one and then a second hand warm waterproof one in a bigger size so I don’t get soaked in the playground.

Can’t understand why there aren’t more warm waterproof maternity coats when it rains so much!

I bought a normal coat from m and s a few sizes too big. A padded and waterproof one. Black so it went with everything. It was 80 pound but worth it to be warm and dry.

Milkbottlelegs · 23/10/2021 08:38

I got a maternity puffer coat, mid thigh length. It had expandable sides plus an extra panel for over a baby carrier. It was more than £50 but I ended up getting a lot of wear out of it and felt it was a good investment. Baby was born in December and I wore it from October through to spring as I used a baby carrier a lot, plus even for some wear out of it the next autumn.

Milkbottlelegs · 23/10/2021 08:39

Probably also depends on your build a bit. Sizing up never worked for me, I looked ridiculous. But I was a very slender size 8 with an absolutely massive bump, an oversized coat would she’s drowned me on the shoulders.

Insomniacexpress · 23/10/2021 08:41

I bought a secondhand Seraphine one that has the expanding front so you can wear a baby carrier and still zip it up after baby is born. Really useful. Might be worth checking eBay or fb marketplace for one

brainstories568 · 23/10/2021 08:49

I bought a really warm and waterproof maternity one for about £20-25 from h&m in their sale. I don't quite understand why they were selling winter coats half price in October but there we go. If I hadn't have done that then I'd have gone for a Seraphine or JoJo one second hand. As someone else said, sizing up a non maternity coat wouldn't have worked as I retained my size 8 build all of the way through pregnancy and just expanded outwards at the bump. But I suppose it depends on your body size. I was also due late March.

honeybeesknees · 23/10/2021 08:59

I also bought a maternity one in Asda, it has the extra zip in panel whichever I never needed, but I think would be good for a baby in a sling, to get a bit more use out of it.

emmafou1807 · 23/10/2021 09:02

I bought one from Asda last year with the extra panel. Kept the panel in after Baba was born and wore it over the sling for a few months.

Incywinceyspider · 23/10/2021 09:02

I got one from Next with a zip out panel, which means that after pregnancy I can just take the panel out and use as a normal coat. I think it was £48

PlanDeRaccordement · 23/10/2021 09:03

They didn’t have them when I was pregnant, so I simply wore one of my husband’s coats when I was massive.

emmafou1807 · 23/10/2021 09:04

This is the Asda one I got last year they still do it. Lovey and warm, and kept me dry.

Ameteurmum · 23/10/2021 09:32

@rk47 - there’s barely any maternity clothes in shops that you can see in person, it’s all online only which is annoying. My usual coats will fit just not done up and I’m reserving the tent coat for wet school runs 🙈 it will be in the charity bag as soon as I’ve deflated somewhat!

rk47 · 23/10/2021 11:31

Thanks everyone, that’s really helpful. I’m an 8 too so maybe sizing up a couple of sizes wouldn’t work too well for me either. Might just have to put if with it to keep dry on occasion though unless I can find a reasonably priced waterproof maternity coat.

I got a JoJo one which isn't completely waterproof but copes well unless really heavy rain. It has a panel which also makes it good for a sling or carrier. I still use it now and my youngest is nearly 2.
