Sorry TMI but what helps constipation during pregnancy

Hello,
Looking for something to help with constipation, I'd usually have senna tablets but they say not to use. I've upped my water and fibre but it's not helping, is there anything that is safe to take whilst pregnant?

You can use Movicol in pregnancy.

And try orange juice (the 'fresh squeezed' one with bits) and walking if poss.

My GP gave me lactulose which really helped.

TinToms · 22/10/2021 07:43

Kiwis. Honestly kiwis.

Fleur405 · 22/10/2021 07:49

I second kiwi fruit!

SubParbanMum · 22/10/2021 07:54

I third kiwis!

PurpleParrotfish · 22/10/2021 07:56

Lactulose over the counter at the chemists.

Peeeas · 22/10/2021 07:57

Dates, dried apricots, dried figs

ODFOgrinch · 22/10/2021 08:10

Try fybogel every day with your main meal, and go for a walk every day.

OneStepOneStumble · 22/10/2021 08:11

I ate a tonne of kiwis, kidney beans and had lots of juice. Once 'cleared' (sorry) I religiously ate 5 dried apricots a day and I swear it did the trick 😅 became a bit obsessive about it by the end because it truly is awful

horseymum · 22/10/2021 08:11

Prunes/ prune juice

themuttsnutts · 22/10/2021 08:14

Cloudy apple juice

Bear45 · 22/10/2021 08:54

Thank you for the replies, I'll get some movicol to get things moving.

Kiwis? I've never heard that one but I'll give it a go 🤣

I walk a lot as it is with work and walk the dog twice a day, average 18000 steps a day so it's not lack of movement I don't think

🤞🏼 the movicol and adding more fruit will help

Bran flakes, honestly sorted me right out when I was suffering early on. Still eating them regularly and haven't had any issues since. I'm 29 weeks now

TopCatsTopHat · 22/10/2021 08:56

Apples, the pectin is the main bit that helps.

Flowerbug1994 · 22/10/2021 10:07

I’ve had the same problem for the last 2 weeks I’ve been in agony even been bleeding 😭😭 I went to my go yesterday she said prescribed me lactose which I took at 8 last night and was on the toilet at 4am this morning. She also said have weetabix for breakfast and a kiwi and some fresh orange before lunch that way it gives them time to work through the day. And tons of water said we Arnt going to be going the toilet enough 😂😂

Eumy · 22/10/2021 10:36

I found that even with lots of fibre and water it wasn't enough to keep me regular! In the end I had some Laxido prescribed by my GP - it tastes gross, but it works. It can take a few days to get everything to settle, but it's safe to have every day.

Catherine1210 · 22/10/2021 14:00

Ortis fruits and fibres are great, from Holland and Barratt

Maxiedog123 · 22/10/2021 14:04

Movicil

cultkid · 22/10/2021 14:06

I got an enema from amazon it looked like a sex toy but saved me SO many times pregnant or not and meant no more rotten drugs going in my body x

cultkid · 22/10/2021 14:06

Instant too you can be relieved in like five mins x

I'm going to ring my gp and get them to get me something, I've drank so much water this week and nothing has helped

Go for a gentle swim - takes the weight off and works wonders Grin

BrunoJenkins · 22/10/2021 17:54

Fruit juice and a walk. Or a coffee (if you're still drinking that - nhs says you can have 2 instant cups a day while pregnant)

HyphenCobra · 22/10/2021 20:38

This time I'm having flaxseeds in either some yoghurt before bed or drink a glass of water with them before bed.

Works wonders!!! Much better than all the gp stuff. Just make sure you take it each night until regular then can ease off again to couple of days x

Are you on a multivitamin containing iron? Iron can be very constipating and some people are very sensitive to even the low doses in multivits for pregnant women.
I didn't go for 12 days (!!!) after I started on them when pregnant despite trying all sorts. Then stopped and things gradually got going, to my immense relief.
I ate lots of shreddies which are fortified with iron and a different multivit (ask your pharmacist as some non-iron containing multivitamins will not be suitable in pregnancy due to too much Vit A I believe).
The shreddies trick meant I didn't even need iron in my subsequent twin pregnancy, in which needing additional iron supplementation is usual to avoid severe anaemia.
