Not personally, but I belive the stats are at well over 90% survival for a 28 weeker. Wishing you both all the best Flowers

TheEvilPea · 19/10/2021 11:48

Not personally either, but I have friends who have had good outcomes from this or even earlier births. I am so sorry you are going through this but the stats look very positive. Thanks

Yes indeed, my friend delivered at 25 weeks due to life threatening pre-eclampsia! Baby was fine, just needed to stay in hospital until close to her due date.

That baby is now a thriving 16 year old!

Positive thoughts, you’ve got this 💐💐💐

My 8 year old is a 29 weeker Flowers. She's tiny but perfect. Have they said why you may have to deliver early?

Wigglegiggle0520 · 19/10/2021 11:55

Yes and she’s a bright and super tall 7 year old now!
Good luck OP Flowers

Marcipex · 19/10/2021 11:57

My first baby was born at 28 weeks and was fine though she spent her first few weeks in an incubator.

Mama1980 · 19/10/2021 11:57

Yes I had ds1 at 26 weeks ds2 at 24 weeks both had a long NICU journey but are now fine. In fact ds1 at 13 is already taller than me.
28 weeks is tough but the outcome is generally good. Best of luck!

I was told to expect an early delivery from 23 weeks. Ended up going to 32. My hospital loaned me a premature baby book by Tommy’s baby charity. It was great. Told me just enough about what might happen. Can you ask if they have anything similar? (I’ve tried and failed to find it online, sorry). Sending my best wishes.

Not me personally but my friend's son was born at 24 weeks. He is now an energetic, happy, smart 5-year-old.

InTheLabyrinth · 19/10/2021 12:01

I know a 24 weeker. She is doing just fine, and the only long lasting bits are she smiles whenever she hears the language the nurses spoke in while she was in NICU (not english) and glasses from aged 2.

I also know a 23 year old 27 weeker. She has hearing aids, but has completed her degree, and is now working in a competitive field.

desperate4spring · 19/10/2021 12:02

My DH was born at 29 weeks and that was 40 years ago. I'm sure your little one will be fine. I hope you both are quickly right as rain x

elliejjtiny · 19/10/2021 12:12

My son was born at 35 weeks but there were a few 28 week babies in nicu at the same time as him who we have stayed in touch with. They are all happy and healthy 8 year olds now.

Sunshinealligator · 19/10/2021 12:15

My eldest DDs biological father was born at 24 weeks gestation, absolutely fine. His parents were told all sorts of horror stories and told that he would have life long health issues, he has always been pretty healthy after the NICU stay.

wishing you and your family all the best, even with people sharing their experiences of people they know born at a similar time it must be stressful, also wishing you a speedy recovery from Covid.

Confused521 · 19/10/2021 12:19

These are great. Keep em coming!!!! Thank you!

I have a happy healthy 24 weeker. Sure there are issues but generally all good.

Good luck OP.

Brollywasntneededafterall · 19/10/2021 12:31

My friend had all her 3 at 28 weeks. All are now 30yo +!!
The abortion cut off was 28 weeks back then!
None have any issues. And all have their own dc now.

boymum88 · 19/10/2021 12:44

Yes my 1st was a 28 weeker, he came very quickly so didn't get chance for steroids. He spent 108 days in nicu and was very poorly, nearly lost him a couple of times. He's now 3 with health issues like hydrocephalus, delayed development cerebral palsy, speech and language delayed. But Christ his the happiest wee boy,
Prem baby's make their own path we as parents just help guide and support them.

28 weekers have great survival rates, having steroids and magnums on board really do make the world of difference.

The stats improve dramatically at 28 weeks. The medical team will be able to advise. My friends baby was born at 24 weeks and he’s now a happy toddler.

BikeRunSki · 19/10/2021 12:48

I was born at 28 weeks, 50 years ago. I have had no significant health issues 🤞.

Good luck x

Confused521 · 19/10/2021 12:56

I know two brothers who were born at 26/27 weeks in the 90s (not twins). Both were in NICU for a while but are now completely fine. One has slight hearing issues and went for annual audiologist check ups throughout childhood (they’ve now established all the machines beeping pinged and echoed around inside the incubator which affected the underdeveloped ears), but otherwise no long lasting damage. Think about how much medical advances there have been since then - thinking of you and sending strength 💐

jolota · 19/10/2021 13:38

My cousin just had her baby at 29 weeks by emergency c section because she went in for a routine midwife appointment and the baby's heart rate was really low.
Stayed in the hospital for almost 2 months because his heart rate kept dropping randomly & they couldn't find a cause but it also didn't seem to be causing him any issues so they eventually just sent them home.
Now 6 months and doing just fine, though still can't hold his head up fully on his own, they said he's developmentally more like 3-4 months old because he was so premature.

MilduraS · 19/10/2021 14:21

I went to school with twins who were delivered at 23/24 weeks. The exact week is a guess but I remember it was a week or two before the cut off point for abortion. One of them mentioned it during a debate on abortion laws. They were both healthy teenagers when I met them and would have been born in 1986/87. Medicine has moved on leaps and bounds since then too. Wishing you lots of luck!

Marcipex · 19/10/2021 19:10

My colleagues baby was born at 23 weeks and spent months in scbu, I know he had a blood transfusion in very early days.
He is at secondary school now and he has no issues at all.

WallaceinAnderland · 19/10/2021 19:16

My 28 weeker has just completed her masters degree. 2 weeks in NCU and 3 in local hospital for observation only. Tube fed at first but went on to breast feed and would take bottles too. No development issues at all.
