Anyone else in first trimester feeling so unwell?

LS2020 · 20/09/2021 06:19

7 weeks today, first child via IVF so very much wanted and been a long time waiting. Obviously so pleased to be pregnant but it’s really taking its toll. Started being physically sick about a week ago and since then have lost my voice from being so unwell. Nausea is pretty much constant throughout the day (is fine from about 6/7pm). Currently had no voice for 4 days which I assume is down to sickness. Today I woke up feeling like I’ve been hit by a bus. Had sinus headaches all weekend, can feel the pain in my sinuses now. I’ve got a runny nose and a horrid cough (done a LF and that was negative this morning). Work is pretty stressful at the moment and definitely not helping to relax and get rest but I am sleeping probably about 9-12 hours a day and OH has been fab at picking up housework etc.
Anyone got any tips or even just to say it gets better, would hugely appreciate!!

Probably not what you want to hear but you need a PCR test as you have symptoms. A lateral flow test isn't sufficient unfortunately.

ArthurApples · 20/09/2021 06:33

Agree about the PCR.

ArthurApples · 20/09/2021 06:34

6 weeks here and just had food poisoning over the weekend, you have my huge sympathy for the sickness especially.

ReeseWitherfork · 20/09/2021 06:41

Yes... So freaking tired and the nausea is nonstop. But I recall feeling this way with my first and it definitely did go eventually.

Theneverendingcleaningcycle · 20/09/2021 06:53

All sounds normal except the sinus headache cough and runny nose. You need to do a PCR. You might just have another virus though so rest up!

LS2020 · 20/09/2021 06:58

Thanks all, I was semi resigned to a PCR even because it’s the right thing to do given everything at the moment so will get one ordered.
I’m hoping it’s just a cold I’ve managed to pick up elsewhere. Ive been working 6 day weeks so hoping it’s just a case of needing a couple of days rest to get back to normal 🤞🏻 Been a bit worried on everything saying nausea peaks in week 9, not sure I can cope beyond this level of sickness, already lost a kilo in weight this past week 😫

I'm 10 weeks pregnant and I feel sick as a dog. First pregnancy (had an ectopic pregnancy back in April) so like you very much wanted but, man, I wasn't expecting to feel so ill.

"Morning" sickness is bullshit. I feel like I could cope if I just felt sick for a few hours first thing but no it's all bloody day, coming in waves of nausea. I feel sick if I eat and I feel sick if I don't eat so I feel like I can't win.

Absolutely exhausted all the time and needing minimum 12 hours sleep per night. Can't get past 7:30pm as I hit my "wall" at that point and just can't function.

I keep being told all this will pass once I hit 12 weeks so I reckon I'm going to be just white knuckling it for the next fortnight xx

Somerandomgirl · 20/09/2021 07:55

Week 6 was the most horrible for me so far...hang in there x still not extremely great at 15 weeks but feels better than the early weeks

LS2020 · 20/09/2021 11:35

@Harlequin1088 this is exactly where I am it’s awful!! What’s worrying me is there’s supposedly 5 weeks left of this :(

Rang doctors and as expected they want me to do a PCR but also partly so I can come in if not well still later in week. They think I’m just over exhausted, have a cold and also pregnant. They’ve put me on some antisickness meds and asked me to do 3 days on them and if I’m struggling, to ring them back up.

@Somerandomgirl oh that’s helping, I’m terrified this is another 5/6 weeks 😫

i felt awful in my first trimester. I honestly don't know how people commute and i was so grateful covid meant i could work from home.

I am usually a night owl and stay up til like 1am but was going to bed at 9pm sleeping through to half 8 and still needing naps at lunchtime and had to finish work at 4 as was so exhausted and naseau!

It did get easier though

Somerandomgirl · 20/09/2021 15:29

@LS2020 i know sorry Confused hope it gets better for you sooner. I posted even the other day, i cant stand it any longer.. and again nauseous today Hmm. And cant sleep at night am so uncomfortable..Everyone says gets better when u enter second trimester... so fingers crossed

MamaMolly · 20/09/2021 15:34

What prenatal vitamins are you taking? I was insanely sick in my first trimester and was taking pregnacare max tablets - it wasn't until I stopped taking them that my nausea literally vanished. When I did a bit of research it turns out that pregnacare is notorious for increasing nausea and some other brands are too. Just a thought!

Anon08 · 20/09/2021 15:37

I felt awful, like a 24/7 hangover up to 15 weeks 😬 The exhaustion is beyond anything I’ve ever experienced.

I just had to listen to my body, grit my teeth and do what I could.

It does get better, but agree with other posters that it’s worth getting a PCR based on your symptoms.

LS2020 · 20/09/2021 16:52

@Bells3032 this is what I’ve been thinking on, every other pregnant woman gets up and goes to work etc, how on earth do they manage it?! Feeling like there’s something wrong with me on not coping.

@Somerandomgirl it’s just everything takes time, I started getting ready at 4.50 today just to be able to leave the house at 7 because being sick, clearing up, needing to sit down down for 15 mins because I’m dizzy - it takes so much time. Then I usually can’t work til about 9/10 when I stop feeling sit and the second I have lunch the cycle starts again 😫

@MamaMolly that’s interesting. I’m taking the pregnacare chewable as I struggle with tablet taking already. I might go back to what I was taking prepregnancy as tbh that had most the stuff in anyway that I need.

Thanks @Anon08 will try grin and bear it!!

@LS2020 I did find travel sickness bands helped the nausea too

IVFdreams2021 · 20/09/2021 16:58

Same here. IVF pregnancy and I've been signed off work since 6 weeks, 12 weeks this Thursday and I'm so so sick! Feel like I constantly have a sickness bug!

Nillynally · 20/09/2021 16:59

Yes me too. Week 9, constant hangover, being sick a few times a day, awful headaches and the tiredness like ive nothing ive experienced. First pregnancy was not this bad...
I had a pcr on Monday as I had tonsillitis but came back negative, the tonsillitis took my mind off the sickness!

Yes THISSSS!!

I have only been not taking them for 48 hours and already I feel a million trillion times better.

The digestive system is back, the constipation is gone, appetite is back, and the nausea is now nausea rather than randomly projectile vomiting.

I switched to Vit B Complex and have two a day in the morning. Each tablet also has 200ug of folic acid so two tablets will cover your folic as well. Absolutely life changing!

Yes I was like this to 15/17 weeks each time.

Truly awful. You have my every sympathy.

It's not like this for every woman, rest assured.

The only upside I can tell you is that when you get to the newborn phase it will seem not so bad compared to this! Yes you'll be knackered but at least you won't feel sick.

It's good your on anti- sickness tabs.

kjcar · 20/09/2021 17:23

You're not alone OP and glad to see that your Dr is taking you seriously!

I'm 7 weeks too with my first pregnancy and also feel like I have a bad hangover 24/7 and nausea. I haven't actually been sick yet, but there have been some close calls. I can only really stomach fruit and plain carbs! Glad to know that It does wear off eventually, but seems like some of us are in for a few more rough weeks! I've found it really difficult to stay at my desk for more that 1-2 hours at a time, so May need to tell work soon as we're expected to be in the office 2-3 days a week...

Somerandomgirl · 20/09/2021 17:41

I really dont know why they promote pregnacare so much...i had constant stomach pain whole first pregnancy and whole year after cayse i was taking them... stupidly enough only after all that time did i search reviews on google and so many complain of stomach issues taking them..stopped them and it stopped... so be careful whoever takes them!

MamaMolly · 20/09/2021 17:59

I would definitely try ditching the pregnacare for something else. They are also ridiculously expensive and actually you don't need all that fancy stuff they claim to have. I'm not sure where you are but the healthy start vitamins given from midwives in the UK are really all you need - and they are free! Hope this helps you - the sickness and nausea of the 1st trimester is so awful and isolating - nothing worse. Hope it eases for you soon - and then you can enjoy your pregnancy! Thanks

bubblepond · 20/09/2021 18:08

Just here to sympathise with you OP! I'm 12+5 and have felt as you describe with the nausea, vomiting and exhaustion since week 6. Then last week I got hit with a cold (PCR negative) and had to take 3 days off work as all I was doing was sleeping and vomiting.

I've been told it does get better eventually! So far what I've found helpful is to eat little and often (every 2-3 hours when awake, and I keep crackers/a banana on the bedside table for the middle of the night), eat what I fancy (mostly plain carbs and some fruit) and to allow yourself to take it easy.
I also have a busy, stressful job and normally I would be running around doing all sorts of things on my time off but I've just been resting. Like your DH my DH has picked up all the housework which has really helped!

I hope the antisickness kicks in soon for you! Thanks

Insomniacexpress · 20/09/2021 18:12

I had to switch from pregnacare to just folic acid tablets as the iron in the multivitamins was compounding the nausea so badly. Also suffered from pregnancy rhinitis which feels like never ending hayfever . Totally feel for you, it’s a brutal stage but it will end eventually

Bumpsadaisie · 20/09/2021 18:31

I know that the thought of 15 weeks seems like FOREVER.

But it WILL pass. And it is quite good training for motherhood, you have to learn to tolerate feeling shit with a degree of acceptance rather than rage - and try to go on gently while being kind to yourself. It is really challenging but I think it will really stand you in good stead for all those challenging moments when the baby is here.

One can say all one likes that it is unfair - that women have to go through all this. Yes, it is bloody unfair. It is not f**king fair, but there it is. There are many blessings that accrue only to us, also, once the baby is here!

You will get through but god I feel for you, think it was the worst I ever felt ever, both physically and in terms of my mental health.
