Newborn V 0-3 months sizing

Morning all,

We’re starting to buy a few bits of baby clothing now that we know what we’re having. We’re hoping to buy things in a range of sizes but also to keep track of what we’ve got in each size so we don’t end up having too much or too little of one thing.

I just wondered about the difference between newborn and 0-3 months sizing. Obviously the latter will be slightly larger, but I wondered how long realistically she will be in newborn clothes for? Two weeks ish? If so, how much do we really need to get in newborn size bearing in mind things get dirty easily but she won’t be in them for very long?

Obviously this will vary depending on the baby but just wondering roughly what I should be aiming for? She’ll be a January baby so will probably spend most of her first weeks wrapped in blankets anyway so it doesn’t really matter what’s underneath!

Were you using nappies?? How did you get THAT many leaks in a morning?

Presumably because a lot of babies wee when exposed to cold air while changing nappies? And bring up a bit of milk at every feed. And poo up their backs....

I’m not sure we used newborn at all. Baby was 8lb 3oz when born. 0-3 was too big on her. But up to 1 month fitted well. Like a previous poster, we didn’t have a sickly baby - so 6 babygros in up to 1 month would have been plenty for us (but pretty sure we actually had less than that!)

My baby was 5.5lbs at birth and at 9 weeks old we are still (just) in newborn clothes! 🙈 Like others have said, we have been gifted a ton of 0-3 so recommend buying very little in that size. I'd say a pack of vests and a pack of sleepsuits? You can always order for next day delivery if needed. John Lewis newborn is quite big so that might last you longer. M&S newborn is tiny (when our baby was in JL "tiny baby" size, M&S "newborn" fit her) so would go for 0-1 at least if you are buying from there. We had nothing that fit our baby when she was born but as she was admitted for a couple of weeks, we ordered to the M&S shop inside the hospital for next day delivery.

Thank you all so much for your advice! This is really helpful to know. It sounds like so much of it depends on the baby that we’re better off to wait to see how big she is likely to be before buying newborn stuff. Fortunately we haven’t got loads of this already!

@Ohshitiveturnedintomymother initially we didn’t know you had to point the bits down and were using aldi nappies which didn’t fit him right in the body (tall but v.slim waist). Totally our fault 😂

I love reading these threads and seeing posters say “you get given loads in size x or y” as we got given 0 outfits by friends and family.

My beat advise is buy whatever makes YOU feel confident. Yes the shops don’t close so you can always buy more but if having a wardrobe is what makes you happy and confident then there’s nothing wrong with that.

Italiandreams · 29/08/2021 09:25

It’s difficult to know until baby is born, I had a 6lb baby who needed tiny baby stuff so took a couple of months to get to 0-3 and a 10lb baby who went straight into 0-3 so buying loads of newborn stuff would gave been a waste. Luckily for second we had a few bits from first and just planned to make do and buy more if needed.

Ahh that makes sense! Grin the beauty of hindsight and experience

All those who are saying a pack or two- two packs would be 6 sleepsuits. We went through a MINIMUM of 2 vests and sleepsuits a day. Unless you are planning on tumble drying (we never did after the first week, as they definitely shrank the suits down) then having enough for 3 days only does not give you a lot of leeway for washing and drying, especially when you're getting to grips with a newborn!

We only had 6 sleepsuits of up to 1 month, which lasted us til she was 2 weeks old, and I would have felt much more comfortable with 12 available

olderthanyouthink · 29/08/2021 19:51

My first (6lbs) was in 0-1 (H&M so EU sizing) for at least a couple months and we had a dozen vests because she got through them like mad with tonnes of sick and nappy leaks. My second has outgrown those vests in lest than a month and barely used them, cloth nappies take up a bit more space but they leak less abs he's not nearly as sicky so didn't need to change them constantly. Also it's summer, he wears one layer where she being an autumn/winter baby wore a few.

Buy a pack of each and see what works.
