Newborn V 0-3 months sizing

Morning all,

We’re starting to buy a few bits of baby clothing now that we know what we’re having. We’re hoping to buy things in a range of sizes but also to keep track of what we’ve got in each size so we don’t end up having too much or too little of one thing.

I just wondered about the difference between newborn and 0-3 months sizing. Obviously the latter will be slightly larger, but I wondered how long realistically she will be in newborn clothes for? Two weeks ish? If so, how much do we really need to get in newborn size bearing in mind things get dirty easily but she won’t be in them for very long?

Obviously this will vary depending on the baby but just wondering roughly what I should be aiming for? She’ll be a January baby so will probably spend most of her first weeks wrapped in blankets anyway so it doesn’t really matter what’s underneath!

They ALL have a weight on the inside label.

Go by that. Eat shop is different.

For newborn to 0-3 we have 7lb, 9.5lb, 10lb, 11lb, 12lb and 14lb clothing. They ALL have either newborn or 0-3m.

FTEngineerM · 28/08/2021 11:15

Eat = each

MamaTutu2 · 28/08/2021 11:16

If you have 9/10 pound babies maybe, I’ve had an 6lb and an 8 pounder, 0-3 swapped them both, they were in new born for 8 weeks and 5/6 weeks respectively! For my 8lber I hadn’t bought any newborn only up to 1 month and had to go buy newborn because it just looked silly on her.

3cats4poniesandababy · 28/08/2021 11:16

Depends what size they are born.

Some go straight to 0-3

I would suggest maybe 1 pack of newborn sleepsuits and 1 pack of newborn vests. You can always send someone to a supermarket to buy you another pack or 2 if needed.

girlmom21 · 28/08/2021 11:18

My DD literally wore a newborn sized outfit home then never wore another again. They're based on baby's weight.

Newpuppymummy · 28/08/2021 11:21

Yes based on weight so I’d buy maybe 15 baby grows in newborn to get you started. Bearing in mind they can easily go through for changes a day when they’re born.If you have a baby7 pounds or less you may even need to start on the tiny baby clothes.

CaptainMarvelous · 28/08/2021 11:24

Mine were too long for newborn stuff when they were born.

I'd do as PP suggested: pack of vests and pack of sleepsuits in newborn size and maybe one going home outfit if you want one and everything else in 0-3. You won't want to faff about with t shirts / trousers etc in the first few weeks anyway.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 28/08/2021 11:25

Both my DDs wore up to 10lb clothing for two months. Then up to 14Lbs for the next two months.

They were 7.5lbs and 8lbs at birth, but slow growers.

ComeonJulia · 28/08/2021 11:25

All mine were born around 7lb and were in newborn for around 6-8 weeks

periwinkle86 · 28/08/2021 11:28

Ah that’s really helpful - thank you all! I didn’t realise it was based on size (will check the labels of what we have). It sounds like some, but not loads, of newborn stuff will be enough to get us started and we can take it from there.

Do not buy 15 baby grows in newborn!!
6 is fine.

MamaTutu2 · 28/08/2021 12:22

@periwinkle86 @dontblamemee my DS could have easily gone through 6 outfits in a morning either by weeing on them or vomiting.

Mmr224 · 28/08/2021 12:34

Mine were 7.7 and 7.11. they were in newborn/0-1 month for 6-8 weeks. Neither were sicky babies so generally wore an outfit or babygrow each day and another at night. Summer babies so girl tended to wear dress and tights during the day and babygrow at night. Boy often vest and soft trousers day and babygrow night. My sister in law had a long heavy baby who went straight into 0-3 and was sicky so went through 2-3 babygrows a day

grisen · 28/08/2021 12:53

We had very little in new born, a couple baby grows and vests and anything else like jumpers or whatever made up with 0-3 month. He was also a january baby.
We went for a lot of walks and our best buy was a snow suit in 0-6 months that we used under the super warm footmuff we bought.

PuddingPie16 · 28/08/2021 13:01

Don't buy lots of newborn clothes, complete waste of money.
I'd wait until closer to your due date so you have an idea of what the size of the baby might be. Our DS was a chunk and didn't fit in newborn at all but we knew he would be a big baby so didn't have any newborn clothes.
Even if you buy newborn, just buy a handful of sleep suits and vests as most newborn sizes only go up to 7lbs. You're best bet is to buy more 0-1 month as they tend to typically go up to 10lb, some are up to 9lb.

girlmom21 · 28/08/2021 13:07

Honestly don't bother buying more than a few newborn vests. People buy newborn clothes as gifts.

KnobJockey · 28/08/2021 13:07

Newborn/ first size is generally up to 7.5lb, I would say wait until you're further on, see if you're expecting an average or big baby. If average, they'll prob be in it for a few weeks at least, so maybe 2 packs of sleepsuits and vests to start with.

Up to 1 month/ 10lb is the next size. My almost 10lber was in these for a couple of weeks, I imagine most babies are in these for about 6-8 weeks, so buy a fair amount

0-3/ up to 14lb will be giant for most newborns! It was big on mine, and she was a 10lb chunk 😊

KnobJockey · 28/08/2021 13:09

Oh, and nobody bought us newborn outfits/ sleepsuits, and she got tons of clothes bought as gifts. Just about everything we got was 0-3 months, so she had wayyyyy too much in that size.

LakeShoreD · 28/08/2021 13:09

My DD was 7lb13 at birth and fitted newborn for about a month. My DS was 8lb3 so not a great deal heavier but was very long and newborn never fitted him. Both of mine were sick a lot and went through a lot of outfit changes but I’d still only get one pack of newborn babygrows and vests and the rest of the clothes in 0-3 months. You can always roll the sleeves up if 0-3 is slightly too large and you can always order more newborn with next day delivery of baby is quite a bit smaller. If you buy loads of newborn and it doesn’t fit then you’ve wasted your money so really don’t go overboard.

8dpwoah · 28/08/2021 13:12

Definitely depends on the shop, I've fallen foul of this today. Bought some tiny baby stuf having previously had it from M&S going up to about 6.5lb which is not really that tiny... Bought some from Morrisons and it only covers up to 5lb! It's approx of course but the weights do help. I know we'll be in newborn/first size for a month or so then hopefully into 0-3 after that but it's a piece of sting really.

But 0-3 will last a lot longer in any event so it's a better buy for sure.

Newpuppymummy · 28/08/2021 13:20

6 outfits?? You could get through that many in a day easily. Why would you want to stress about co star it washing/drying? 15 newborn sleep suits would cost about 25-30 depending on where you got them from.

Caspianberg · 28/08/2021 13:20

Newborn lasted just in hospital with 8lb 8 baby. I wouldn’t bother .

0-3 better.

M and s sell 1 month clothing which I would recommend instead of newborn but not as big as 0-3. I think 1 month clothing lasted about 4-6 weeks here.

You can just buy 0-3 cardigans etc though as just fold longer sleeve over a few weeks if needed.

We have never had 15 sleepsuits in any size and Ds wore them day and night when small. I think 6-8 is general plenty, and you can always quickly order another multipack if you have a very sick baby.

yikesanotherbooboo · 28/08/2021 13:26

Don't buy 15 of anything!
My babies were 8lb 3oz and 6lb 12 oz. they were fine in 0-3 . Yes , the outfits would have fit a bit better in the smaller size for the first few weeks but there isn't a need to buy the newborn for an average size baby. I was given a newborn babygro as a present for DC2 who was the lightest and he wore it for 'best' ( he went to 2 weddings in his first few weeks). It is easy to buy things if you need them as all the supermarkets ( and amazon) stock baby essentials. All these baby threads and the baby shops suggest large numbers of necessary items that really aren't needed. Get a few basics, see what you are given and top up with things you actually need rather than 48 muslins or whatever.

To be fair if you get the multipacks from a supermarket you could get 15 for £15ish
Carbis · 28/08/2021 13:42

It will totally depend on the size and shape of your baby and where you get things from.

According the the growth scans, my LO was going to be a whopper but he was 7lb 3 when he was born and needed tiny baby for the first couple of weeks.

I’ve also found that M&S fits him far better than JL.

We got through loads of clothes in hospital because it took a while to get the hang of nappy changes and his clothes got soaked with wee a few times!
