HELP!! Constant nausea

What are your tips for helping with nausea?

I'm desperate 😩 I'm 6 1/2 weeks and it's really getting to me. I've only actually been sick about 5 times, but the nausea is so bad I haven't even left the house in 3 days.

To make it worse, I've completely gone off food. Nothing appeals to me and I'm having to force myself to eat. It's an endless circle of feeling sick because I'm hungry, eating, then feeling sick because I ate.

Please tell me this won't last the full 9 months 🙈

It's horrible isn't it.

For me it was freezing cold Diet Coke and very very strong salt and vinegar crisps. And just sleeping as much as I could really.

Hopefulmama93 · 27/08/2021 14:54

@IncludeWomenInThePrequel it is!!

Diet Coke is actually helping a little, but I can't sleep in the day and struggle to sleep at night because of the nausea, I'm just tossing and turning 🙈

Anti sickness wrist bands helped me - whether it was a placebo or not I didn’t care it gave some relief (I was never physically sick so the nausea was 24/7).

Hopefulmama93 · 27/08/2021 15:08

@Coriandersucks ooh thank you, I'll see if I can get one. I'll try anything right now

Man, it was awful. Believe it or not, you do learn to cope with it. I was bedridden during the first really bad week and then to be honest it didn't get much better until about 16 weeks but I learned how to manage it and also just got better at dealing with it. You'll find what helps you (for me it was Jacobs crackers eaten VERY slowly and sparkling water). Best of luck!

Garman · 27/08/2021 16:09

Nothing helped me, it eventually lessened a bit at about 18-20 weeks, only to be replaced by constant heartburn. Ice water was about the only small relief.

sayanythingelse · 27/08/2021 16:37

Cyclizine prescribed by my GP was the only thing that helped me when I was pregnant with DD. It did slow down at 13 weeks but I was still sick up until giving birth Sad

Elisemum · 27/08/2021 17:10

This time around the nausea eased a bit around 17/18 weeks (only to be replaced by a horrible heartburn). In my case nothing helped, I tried everything almonds, ginger tea. All I can eat during this pregnancy is ice cold grapes and apples, ice cold drinks. I eat half a kilo of grapes every day :). Ive gone off food completely. I actually can’t imagine eating normal meals anymore :( it will or will not get better but it’s all worth it and you will manage through it

Olafthemoth · 27/08/2021 17:13

I know it's not always popular but there is medication which is perfectly safe in pregnancy.
Sometimes I feel judged for not managing to cope without. But the way I see it, a well nourished, exercising, happy mother on safe medication is better for baby than when I am barely eating or moving and spending most of the day depressed.

It might not be for you but is worth considering.

AnnieBanannie1 · 27/08/2021 17:17

Mint imperials some the job for me!

Elisemum · 27/08/2021 17:23

@Olafthemoth you are completely right and I agree with you - medication is there to be used! I remember my GP prescribed something but it was ridiculous price- 3 days worth of tables were 50 euro!! I can’t remember the name now. The reason I didn’t buy it was becouse I was already 17 weeks and I was hoping it will pass and it did. But now replaced by heartburn from hell and I started taking meds for it and god it changed my life. I’m so much less miserable- so yes meds all the way!

Garman · 27/08/2021 17:43

The medication to help would have been €100 a month for me, I already had paid €120 for a month of progesterone and kept hoping it would ease by 12 weeks, then 14 weeks, etc.

Lzgs · 27/08/2021 18:14

Cyclizine and metoclopramide helped me a lot! I have spent most of this summer in bed from sickness.
My advice is try and get something in your stomach to prevent having a completely empty stomach. Vomiting bile and the dehydration becomes an endless and horrible cycle!
I have found plain carbs foods like mashed potato, white rice, boiled pasta and white toast helped. Try and have a couple of bits every half hour. I know it’s soo much easier said than done and it gets super frustrating and mentally isolating but I am 10+2 today and feeling a bit more human. Even managed a solo trip to Sainsbury’s for the first time in two months!
Hope it eases soon xx

Derbee · 27/08/2021 18:14

I am throwing up a couple of times a day, and have constant nausea. It’s really miserable. The only time I don’t feel AWFUL is when I’m eating. I have a huge bowl of popcorn next to me, and snack on it all day. I throw everything up that I drink, apart from iced sparkling water.

It started at 5wks. I am 9w1d currently and it’s getting worse and worse. I’m really nervous that it will be like this the whole time, and I don’t know how I’ll cope.

Sympathy....I suffered from all day long sickness and nausea..was hospitalised a couple of times for IV fluids.....so don't suffer too long without checking in with your GP
Nibbling a ginger biscuit
Sucking flavoured ice cubes
Staying out of the kitchen as much as possible
Fresh air

Hopefulmama93 · 27/08/2021 18:21

Thank you all for the advice.
So I can expect it to get worse before it gets better then 🙈

I'm just taking it day by day and eating what I fancy, something that sounds delicious one day can make me want to throw up the next day, so it's all a guessing game at the moment.

Oh that sounds awful.

My husband heard about ginger biscuits helping and he brought me a gingerbread man home 😆 but it didn't work. Is there a certain type you'd recommend?

I'm 9+5 today and have been basically in my bedroom since 6 weeks with constant nausea. Can't stand the smell of the rest of my house or the high street. I'm taking cyclizine which did help initially but the nausea has been ramping up the last few days. I've not been sick too much because I'm avoiding all triggers but need to start work in 3 weeks and currently no idea how that is going to be possible. Solidarity!

Derbee · 27/08/2021 19:24

@PeachScone glad it’s not just me who thinks my house smells! I have to close all the doors and sit alone whilst my partner feeds the dog.

Runforthehillocks · 27/08/2021 19:29

The main thing is not to let yourself get too hungry. Even though you don't want to, you have to keep nibbling on something because once you get too hungry, you will start being sick and it's a vicious circle - being sick therefore can't eat therefore being sick. I also sucked ice cubes. It eased off at about 14 weeks.

mumof2oneofeach · 27/08/2021 19:33

GP! Go to the GP!! Mine lasted my entire second pregnancy. No throwing up but constant nausea that had me signed off work. Lovely lady GP prescribed three kinds of different medication until I could finally at least get up and walk around.

ThunderSocks · 27/08/2021 19:42

Sympathies OP - unrelenting nausea is awful (and often doesn't get the same sympathy as actually being sick). I agree with using medication if needed, the only one that worked for me was ondansetron, but doctors are very reluctant to prescribe it as it's hugely expensive. Cyclizine and a few others I tried did help a little. Vitamin b6 and travel sickness bands were also useful. Other than that, eating little and often and staying away from smells is good advice. Mine lasted until about 14 weeks - fingers crossed yours wears off sooner.

heywhatswrongwitu · 27/08/2021 20:27

I have the same thing - the only thing that's helped is constant small snacks/ meals, and it's helped with food aversion too. I don't let myself get hungry. Also rennies on standby for heartburn plus boiled sweets for when I feel really sick. Having to not even think about how much weight I'm putting on already, anything's better than the nausea.

Ofpalestsilver · 27/08/2021 22:21

Hey there I can sympathise, I’m 13+6 and struggling a lot with nausea, regurgitation, headaches etc. A few weeks ago I had to get medication because I couldn’t function at all. If you find yourself getting to that point, don’t feel bad.

But what you could try is ice cold water or water with slight flavouring (I put mandarin segments in mind). Plain water unless super cool makes me feel ill.

I also found potatoes, bananas, breakfast cereal all quite good. I have been lucky enough that I can eat other things but I really don’t like to cook. Ask your partner or friend to make food for you as sometimes the thought of it is worse than the eating!

bubblepond · 27/08/2021 22:30

It's rubbish isn't it!
I'm 9+2 today and I feel best when I eat little and often - literally eating something every 1.5-2 hours, even if it's just a banana or a pack of crisps. I have to force myself but tend to feel better for a while after eating. I haven't really been able to manage full meals and like you I've just been eating what I fancy (or what makes me feel least sick when I think about it!) and that changes day by day.
In terms of ginger, ginger beer has helped me more than ginger biscuits. Some people say peppermint tea helps them too.
I saw the midwife for the first time today and she said the most important thing is to stay hydrated and listen to what your body tells you it wants - if you crave carbs, or fatty things, then for now eat those things and that's ok. The healthy eating can come later. I'm similar to you in that I don't really fancy anything... I really hope it gets better for you soon!
