Can’t stop eating junk! Week 10 - first time pregnancy

I can’t stop eating chocolate, takeaways, toast, carbs and all the stuff I normally try to avoid. A new point was ordering a Pizza Hut for one last night as my husband judged me eating his stir fry.

Is anyone else experiencing this? I feel so guilty about what I’m eating. Whenever I see my mum she tells me to eat healthy but I’m really struggling. I feel sick from the moment I wake up until I go to bed. No vomiting yet just some lovely dry heaving.

Really worried about what’s normal and what isn’t and whether my eating habits will affect my (v little) baby.

I definitely experienced this. It's gotten a bit better now that I've hit 20 weeks and don't feel rubbish all the time but I certainly ate far more take out than I wouldn't have done in my first trimester and a half than I should have done. It was the only thing that actually appealed to me and didn't make me feel sick. So can totally sympathise!

Have you seen the midwife? Has she been able to take your blood pressure etc. to check everything is okay?

I did eventually figure I should try and eat better. I found just buying fruit and having it in the house as an easy snack really helped. Also having my sugary cereal for breakfast but adding fruit and then slowly cutting down on the cereal over time etc. I can't say whether it'll affect your baby, only the professionals can and of course every pregnancy is different but I can give you some hope that I have a healthy baby at 20 weeks despite my terrible eating habits and have now started to make the changes I need to make sure she stays that way so there's no need to panic too much, there is always room for improvement! :)

I'm right there with you. All that I can eat is crackers toast, biscuits - I'm 10 weeks tomorrow.
As long as you're taking your prenatal vitamins the baby is getting all that it needs from what I understand.
If you are able what I'm trying to do is switch my white bread to wholemeal, having weetabix with some fruit and trying to get a banana or apple into me . If this doesn't work for you that's totally fair. you're going through it so you have to eat what keeps you going
As you start to feel better into your second trimester I think you can start bringing back more fruit and veg but for now just keep doing what you can do x

I ate so much junk but also tried to get good things as well to balance it out!

TwinkleTwinkle11 · 19/08/2021 13:15

I was like this in first trimester, I found I evened myself out after the sickness had gone.

0hMy · 19/08/2021 13:16

I was exactly the same. All I could stomach was beige and yellow food fir the first 15ish weeks as I was so nauseous (no sickness though). In the second trimester, healthy food suddenly seemed so much more appealing. DS was fine. Don’t worry. Wishing you a healthy and happy pregnancy. Flowers

Wnikat · 19/08/2021 13:19

Yep two pregnancies mostly surviving on Dominos, Dairy Milk and litres of orange juice (and vitamins). The kids seem fine...

Colinthecaterpillar35 · 19/08/2021 13:20

I could have written this post about my first trimester - you're definitely not alone!! x

choccrumpet · 19/08/2021 13:23

Before 12/13 weeks all I could face eating was takeaway food or restaurant food (when I could actually eat). I had really bad food aversions which is getting better at the moment and I'm eating more home cooked, better food, but not 100% back to normal yet.

Especially in the first trimester, I think it's okay to eat whatever your body will accept, it's hard enough getting through all the symptoms without worrying about what you're eating. Yes try to make better choices if you can but if you can't then don't worry about it either. It's easier for others on the outside to say you should be doing this and that but unless you're in it they won't understand how crap you might be feeling or how difficult this is!

Also your baby is very small and apparently getting all the nutrients it needs, the leftovers are given to us 😅 so don't worry about this right now

HopefulRose · 19/08/2021 13:32

Thanks for your reply! Reassuring to think it might subside at some point and I’ll be able to return to eating normally. Can you pin point when you started to be able to stomach normal foods again?

I have had one appointment with my midwife so far over the phone. Booked in next Friday for blood pressure and tests.

Weird that you should mention sugary cereal. I haven’t eaten cereal (or even breakfast) for years but week six started fancying Coco Pops and have had them every day since 🙊

@Maighread thanks for the reassurance, nice to know I’m not alone! It’s such a weird time everything I usually like has gone out of the window. I am taking my pregnancy supplements once a day (yuck) but have found those a struggle. I’ve switched from the Pregnacare to another brand, they are like little sweets which seems easier and doesn’t set off my nausea as much. How’s your pregnancy been so far?

HopefulRose · 19/08/2021 13:36

@TwinkleTwinkle11 glad it’s not just me! How far along are you now?

HopefulRose · 19/08/2021 13:38

@0hMy thank you! I can’t tell you how reassuring it is to read that and hear you have a healthy child. I feel so guilty for not eating healthy, bring on the second trimester and hopefully cravings for lettuce x

@choccrumpet thank you. It’s made me feel so much better knowing I’m not alone on this. I always had visions of being a super healthy pregnant woman eating nothing but organic oats and kale, sadly that went out the window quite early on!

So glad you posted this OP. This is me right now, I'm trying to eat as much veg and fruit as possible but certain textures and tastes are really making me wretch. I'm gravitating towards beige food!

Yoghurts aren't too bad so maybe try some more of those?

I'm hoping I can get back on a much better track after the next few weeks.

Hahaha coco pops are what I craved at the weekend! Grin
bubblepond · 19/08/2021 13:51

I feel exactly the same! I am 8 weeks and at this rate baby is going to come out looking like a packet of Batchelors pasta n sauce as it is all I can manage! Normally I cook 6 days a week, from fresh, lots of veg. Can't open the fridge without gagging at the moment never mind cook a meal 🤢

FTEngineerM · 19/08/2021 13:52

My diet is trash when I’m pregnant, I just don’t get it but I can’t seem to stop either. I don’t even gain weight.

alsonotmyname · 19/08/2021 13:58

I'd hazard a guess it's the salt content that is attracting the cravings especially if you usually eat a low salt diet or those of you that are being sick a lot - it will pass

jolota · 19/08/2021 15:44

Food aversions are pretty normal in the first trimester it seems. I'm usually a really healthy eater but have totally gone off vegetables, they all seem totally bitter to me. I've started putting peas in mac & cheese and stuff, feel like I'm getting practice hiding vegetables from a child lol.
I wouldn't worried about nutrients, the baby can take what it needs from you even without prenatals. (Which I hated & switched to individual tablets as some make me more sick than others & I can focus on keeping my folic acid tablet down which is the priority)
I'm just starting to feel a little more open to eating more than bread/pasta/fruit and I'm at 12 weeks.
Though my husband offered to get me mcdonalds or dominoes last night and just the thought made me gag so I don't think my food aversions are totally gone!
If you're able to enjoy what you're eating & keep it down then I wouldn't feel guilty about what you're eating. Obviously ideally we'd all eat super healthily but it's not realistic. I feel like the constant nausea put me into survival mode, whatever I could eat, I did & that's better than not eating!
I wish I could eat chocolate though, I'm actually a little jealous, I've gone off it totally and it's such a comfort food, I'm a little sad haha

Maighread · 19/08/2021 16:55

@HopefulRose honestly it's been good but holy heck the nausea is a killer..
I have a very rough fear of vomiting so that's been a wild ride :D, All I can eat is beige at the moment, food I would normally inhale make me wretch just thinking about but I'm trying to squeeze in the odd beige fruit or veg and walks.
I take the pregnacare as well and honestly I think that doesn't help with the nausea but I can't seem to find anything else so I just grin and bear it for a few more weeks (hopefully lol !)
It's really reassuring to know that we're not the only ones :) x

choccrumpet · 19/08/2021 17:20

@jolota I've been off chocolate for about 3 months 🤣 loved chocolate pre pregnancy, during I don't like it!! I don't think it's a bad thing necessarily 🙃

jolota · 19/08/2021 18:57

@choccrumpet Yeah it's probably not a bad thing, since I'm not eating super healthily right now anyway. I just miss it Smile I don't like healthy food right now or my comfort food! Very limiting haha

choccrumpet · 19/08/2021 20:48

@jolota that is frustrating and hopefully things get better for you! I'm really curious if I just go back to eating chocolate once baby is out or never again 🙈
