I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.
There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.
MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk
If you need help in obtaining medication, phone them on:
024 7638 2020
Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/topics/nausea-vomiting-in-pregnancy
I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.
It has been suggested that I add some practical tooth cleaning advice: a lot of sufferers find using a child's small toothbrush and strawberry toothpaste far less nauseating.
On my image of a pink castle: that is an image I use because when I was little, my family had a Snakes and Ladders board with an image on the last square of a pink castle in the clouds. As Hyperemesis is so like a grotesque version of Snakes and Ladders - eat a meal, go up a ladder, first thing in the morning bile run, down a snake - I have used the image of that pink castle on the last square of that Snakes and Ladders board as a metaphor for the happy end of Hyperemesis.
Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

@kalidasa yes, due to having it so badly last time, I contacted Pregnancy Sickness Support about getting a peer support person before I got pregnant and shes been helping a lot of hg women. She was the one who told me about xonvea so once I found out I was pregnant I booked an appointment with my GP and he agreed to it after telling him how badly I suffered last time. I started taking it at 5 weeks. Ive so far only had bad nausea and 1 lot of vomiting but I can still function and do most daily things unlike last time I spent most days in hospital. I'm now nearly 15 weeks.

I just wish everyone could have the same experience as me with understanding GP/Dr and hospital. I'm guessing Covid has made getting care etc so much harder with not wanting face to face etc which is really bad.

kalidasa · 14/09/2021 10:25

That's fantastic @abbs1 that you've been so much better this time round. With DS2 I did everything possible to prepare, took cyclizine from 2.5 weeks and ondansetron from 4.5 weeks and still ended up in hospital at 6.5 weeks, it was just totally unstoppable. It was quite demoralising because I knew several women from this thread at the time who'd have much better second pregnancies with careful preparation but mine was really a lot worse, so I have kept my expectations very low this time round. Anyway, I've just started taking the Xonvea and the first dose does seem to have helped. I'm 6 weeks today, and threw up for the first time in the middle of the night, and then twice more this morning really classic pattern for me, that once the vomiting starts it is relentless and unstoppable, I threw up cyclizine this morning. So I really thought that was it, but the dose of Xonvea I took an hour ago does seem to have taken the edge off it, so fingers crossed. At only 6 weeks, though, realistically the hormones are going to carry on rising strongly for another couple of weeks at least. I've also only got enough for about 6 days, so need to work out how to get a repeat prescription the midwife all a bit complicated because I am totally new to the system here!

abbs1 · 14/09/2021 11:38

@Kalidasa I found taking one at 6am, then 11am, 4pm and 9-10pm when you go to bed has worked best for me. When i had hormone surges I definitely felt worse and very nauseous but hopefully it will build up in your system over the coming days and help you. Im so sorry you had a terrible time with your 2nd. I hope xonvea helps a lot this time.

Lzgs · 14/09/2021 13:08

Hi all. A question for those who have experienced HG in previous pregnancies...
When did your sickness begin to ease off? I am 13 weeks and I’m still debilitatingly nauseous and vomiting. I’ve noticed if I get even a little bit tired, the next couple of days are hell. Just wondering when I can expect to be a bit more human...

thingymaboob · 14/09/2021 13:24

@Lzgs mine tapered off at 20 weeks and then came back at 28 weeks then lasted until birth. It was a nice 8 weeks. I'm 18 weeks now and still vomiting once each day and very nauseous especially in evenings.

LilmissCa · 14/09/2021 13:32

@Lzgs started to ease nausea/ sickness at 16wks but took another 2 wks to get any energy back. I'm 23wks now & praying it stays away.
Hopefully not much longer for you!

abbs1 · 14/09/2021 13:33

@Lzgs Same here. 20 weeks was when I started to feel better and no vomiting but nausea if I forgot to take my medication on time. It then did get a bit worse the last few weeks but that was probably due to baby pushing on my stomach.
My gynaecologist dr at the hospital said mpst hg sufferers do feel better from 20 weeks. Not all but many so I hope it does for you.

kalidasa · 14/09/2021 15:41

@Lzgs with my two previous pregnancies I felt nauseous all the way through but the vomiting started to ease off around 16 weeks I think. With DS1 I carried on vomiting every morning through to around 23 or 24 weeks -- but was nauseous but not too sick for the rest of the day after that as long as I didn't overdo it. I really thought by that point I would throw up every day for the entire thing but actually it stopped around that point. With DS2 the HG was actually a good deal worse at the peak but didn't have such a long tail. With both pregnancies I did get sicker again in the third trimester and had a bit of vomiting again near the end, but not so much as to need admitting. I threw up a lot in labour as well both times, but that was actually OK because I didn't really feel nauseous at all, I just kept throwing up! Much more bearable without the awful nausea . . .

I think how you felt very early on is often a guide to how later pregnancy will be. I have always felt nauseous almost instantly when pregnant and that has correlated with being nauseous throughout. I'm pregnant again at the moment and it seems similar so far but I'm very early on.

LucindaE · 14/09/2021 20:08

kalidasa I so hope Xonvea is as useful to you as to abbs1.
Lzgs Good advice from thingymaboob kalidasa, Lilmissca and abbs1 about when they had a marked improvement.
I hope Meg232xx and theconfused are feeling slightly better.

Hi ladies - I know if I was being sick as much as some of you I might think differently, but for my the nausea is the worst… and that the sickness doesn’t cure the nausea. I had another good few days at the weekend and thought I might be turning a corner, but today has been vile and nauseous again (which makes me very pleased I extended my sick note).

Lzgs · 14/09/2021 22:51

Thanks for sharing your experiences! I am trying to mentally accept that I might not be going back to work at the end of the month then...
I had another scan today and seeing baby dancing around cheered me up. At least I will vomit with a smile for the next couple of days 🤣

Anxious9thPG · 15/09/2021 04:39

Hi all. An overdue update...had my little girl on the 9th. Florence Phoebe by planned c section. Felt very anxious about the nausea and vomiting on the day but had such great care, took my meds in the morning and was given a top of ondansetron during the surgery, didn't actually vomit! The nausea just went, it felt amazing! Ate a jacket potato and cup of tea on the ward, could have cried with extra happiness! Hang in there everyone, it's so worth it.

kalidasa · 15/09/2021 10:31

Congratulations @Anxious9thPG !

The Xonvea is definitely helping. I haven't been sick since yesterday morning, though I still feel nauseous and also I am totally knocked out, I am doing very little but sleep. Did you find the sedative effect faded after a bit @abbs1 or do I just have to accept it? If it's the price to pay for staying out of hospital for now then I'm prepared to pay it! I am also really struggling to eat at all, it's as if my stomach knows how sick I am "really" feeling beneath the drug, and whenever I try to eat anything I feel as if I will be sick immediately. Not sure the best way round that. Still overall it's good news because yesterday morning I thought that was it for me with the vomiting already.

Catconfusion · 15/09/2021 10:56

Hi ladies, sorry for the absence. Just been trying to keep busy while feeling sick to fend off nerves about my 12 week scan. It was lovely to see baby moving around. The only worry is my nt measurement came out the higher end of normal at 2.8mm. I now need to wait for my blood test results but it’s likely I’ll be high risk for chromosomal abnormalities. I’m so worried given my age. Feeling awful today as I think anxiety makes the sickness worse. Anyway just hoping we get the results back soon so I can relax. Xx

HolsGreen · 15/09/2021 11:32

First time poster here! But feeling pretty crappy today so thought I’d see if there was a support thread and so chuffed to see there is.

I’m 10.5 weeks and have only left the house once in 6 weeks for a scan. Feeling the mental struggle today as well as the physical.

Weirdly reassuring to see other people going through the same, it feels very lonely here. And seen some great tips already, wouldn’t have thought of a kids size toothbrush!

abbs1 · 15/09/2021 11:50

@anxious9thpg congratulations on your little one! I'm so happy all went well and your sickness free finally. Its the best feeling ever!

@kalidasa oh Im so pleased. Yes I found after a couple weeks ny body got used to it and it doesnt affect me anymore really. Hopefully as it builds up you feel less tired.
In regards to eating I found the same. My body jist rejected food and Id eat and immediately throw up. I found mash potato with some gravy and just take like 3 bites then wait 10-15mins and repeat until id eaten it. Maybe try that with any food you eat so your body can get used to food again.

Pleasedontworry · 15/09/2021 16:02

Massive congratulations @Anxious9thPG!

Had my 12 week scan today, which made up for the sudden return to constant vomiting and not keeping down fluids last night (nausea so far today but haven’t vomited yet so hopefully it was a one off).

theconfused · 15/09/2021 17:34

Hi guys!

I hope you're all doing well and surviving today!

This isn't relevant to the group however, is the 12 week scan the one you can find out the gender in?

I've got mine tomorrow and although I'm feeling horrible I'm so excited for the scan!

MrsNovember · 15/09/2021 17:37

Hi everyone, hope you’re all doing okay, I’ve been up and down since last posted…

@Anxious9thPG congratulations- so glad to hear you’re able to eat now. On my worst days when I’m thinking ‘this is never going to get better’ I remind myself it will… ‘Just 6 more months’

@HolsGreen welcome- I’ve found this group massively supportive when feeling really bad, i lurked for a while before posting, but you’re right, it can be a really lonely journey. Have you got people around you supporting you? I’m sure @LucindaE will give you the helpful run through (I made my other half go out and buy sparking mango rubicon after her suggestions and it works miracles!) but if there’s anything particular you need to know the people in this group are super helpful and kind.

@Pleasedontworry - that’s exciting for you- did you see much?- I’m hoping for some hope or feeling that it’s all worth it on Friday when I have my dating scan, I’ll be 13 weeks, crawling toward the magic 16 weeks in hope these symptoms will dissipate…!

MrsNovember · 15/09/2021 17:42

Hi @theconfused -I think its too soon at 12, 20 weeks or second scan seems to be when they can tell gender? Although I’ve heard of other people finding out gender via genetic testing, so I guess it depends on what you go for? I think some earlier scans can pick up gender but they’re less inclined to say… someone else may be better placed to say for sure? My scans on Friday, and feeling very sick and not looking forward to a car journey to the hospital Confused

theconfused · 15/09/2021 18:45

@MrsNovember

Ah thank you! I wasn't sure, I've had people say yes you can (but tbh I don't know if they know themselves) so I thought I'd check with the experts!

theconfused · 15/09/2021 18:46

@MrsNovember honestly I dread sitting in the car, as soon as I enter the car I'm sick constantly!

HolsGreen · 15/09/2021 18:57

Thanks @MrsNovember
My hubby is being fab, doing all the gross housework jobs and going out for bread and crackers!

Last time I was pregnant I ended up in hospital and just doing everything not to go in this time. Have found sipping lemon water helps get some liquid in.

LucindaE · 15/09/2021 19:04

Anxious9thpreg That is happy news! Congratulations on Florence Phoebe - lovely unusual names. Enjoy every minute of her. Happy news that the vomiting has stopped at once. Thank you so much for posting your encouraging message.
HolsGreen Welcome. I am glad you have picked up useful tips on here. Everyone is very supportive on here, as others say. I include my normal spiel that might help, though you may have come across it on the thread. Ignore the bits that don't apply. Most sufferers find that they improve a lot at some point between weeks 14 and 20, or sometimes later. Even those who are unlucky enough to suffer throughout generally are not as ill later on as they are in the first part. A good anti acid can make a surprising difference to the sickness. Kesostix are worth buying online or from a chemists, as while they aren't they best test of dehydration, hospitals take them seriously. When reporting on the vomiting to doctors, remember to emphasize the number of heaves in each vomiting session, as doctors tend to count these as 'vomits' and this can lead to their underestimating the severity of your symptoms. Besides drinking through a straw, here are some drinks that have helped others: full sugar flat coke (if you don't find it too acid), ice lollies, the juice of tinned fruit, Lucozade, apple juice, Ribina, Dr Pepper, soda water, Elderflower water, tonic water, ice cubes, Iron Bru, lemonade, lemon squash, orange squash, orange juice (if not too acid), fizzy orange, 7Up, isotonic drinks, sips of chocolate milkshake (maybe soya), fizzy water, apple juice, Robinson's fruit drinks, Rubicon sparkling mango drink , raspberry Lucozade sport and frozen ice cubes of flat Lucozade sport . Foods of a sort include tinned fruit, cuppa soup, nibbles of crisps and chips, cheap ice cream, Scotch pancakes, bagels and biscuits, potato smileys, slices of melon and mango. Protein drinks have also been mentioned.
MrsNovember I am glad the drinks suggestions helped. All luck for the scan.
Pleasedon'tworry Sorry you've had a relapse. Good that you've extended your sick note.
Catconfusion That is worrying for you. No wonder the tension has built up the sickness. I remember I was given a very high risk for my age - 1 in 43, I remember - and while that worked out as a low chance in a hundred, it still made me horribly anxious. Much sympathy.
kalidasa Limited good news, anyway!
abbs1 Good advice, as ever.
Lzgs I am so glad the scan gave you a boost.
theconfused All luck with the scan.
I hope Meg232xx Is getting better treatment.
Apologies to anyone rudely overlooked.

HolsGreen Ah, as you're a veteran you don't really need that spiel I posted. What meds helped you last time, if any?
