What to pack in hospital bag for AFTER birth?

Sorry if this is a stupid one but I'm clueless!

I've packed a tankini and a couple of big nighties for labour/giving birth but what happens after that? Do I change back into normal clothes? PJs?

Thanks in advance!

I’m not in the UK but was given a hospital gown to wear immediately afterwards. After I had showered, I then put on my own pyjamas (button front for breastfeeding) And then something comfy to go home in - I would suggest leggings, loose top etc!

I took a bag of toiletries for a bath afterwards & shower the next day (had to stay in a night due to dodgy kidneys) and just wore some maternity/nursing pjs in black from H&M. I had maternity leggings and a long top for going home.

Snacks and lucozade for in between meal times, socks and my iPad were essentials. I had a baby who was very content to sleep for long stretches in his cot between feeds in the hospital so was useful to have something to distract from the ward noise.

Unfortunately he didn’t seem to like his cot at home as much .

Have some PJ's in case you need to stay, or it's an evening delivery (you'll stay overnight then). Going home clothes - dark and loose. Baby bump doesn't disappear immediately.

High waisted pants and maxi dress in case you have a c section

thingymaboob · 29/07/2021 15:15

Pads pads pads pads pads. The hospital ones are like bricks. You'll need lots!
Toiletries as my Trust made me have a shower after delivery.
Sensible slippers.
Big knickers.
Dressing gown / PJs

Sprogonthetyne · 29/07/2021 15:28

Get changed into pajamas for the duration of the stay, then a very comfortable outfit like joggers or yoga pants to go home in. Take a few changes just incase the maternity pad leaks, preferably in dark colours, and maybe a nighty in case you end up having a section and need a catheter.

Cranberry juice

TidyOmlette · 29/07/2021 15:31

Lots of extra trousers and loads of maternity pads if it’s a vaginal birth. I bought my pads from boots and they were great but what I wasn’t prepared for was the amount of leaking afterwards and I didn’t even have a major blood loss.

Oh and more snacks! Being hungry at 2am isn’t fun

gogohm · 29/07/2021 15:41

Disposable pants eg tena are useful, otherwise just loose clothing

boymomma33 · 29/07/2021 15:52

Iv packed a nighty for giving birth and a pair of spare pj's for afterwards then a lounge set to come home in. If I have to stay longer and need extra I only live 10 minutes away from the hospital so will be no problem my partner popping home for anything extra

bakingdemon · 29/07/2021 16:00

I forgot toiletries inc shampoo and deodorant so DH had to buy me some in the hospital shop. I don't use spray deodorant but that was all they had and it's still sitting in my bathroom cabinet.
Def pads.
Big big big big pants.
At least 4 changes of clothes for baby (ours went through 3 on day 1 because we hadn't worked out how to change nappies yet)
Nightie for you.
Eye mask and ear plugs - hospitals are noisy noisy places.
Phone charger.
Plenty of snacks.

20viona · 29/07/2021 16:01

Take some Nice comfy loungewear. Bit of makeup so you feel slightly less dead haha.

Elllicam · 29/07/2021 16:03

I packed lots of snacks, lots of loose black trousers, tops, big pants, pads, toiletries, nappies, water wipes, charger, baby clothes and a book.

HairyFeline · 29/07/2021 16:06

Those boob pads for leakages!

LH1987 · 29/07/2021 16:31

Bring a small fan. I tell every pregnant woman this, hospital rooms are so hot!

Also a plug board, the plugs are far away and it really helps.

Beamur · 29/07/2021 16:33

Loose shoes/sliders. My feet were so swollen I couldn't get anything on! Needed something to walk to the car in (winter baby)

Yellow85 · 29/07/2021 16:34

I’d also suggest your own paracetamol! I was refused anymore than one paracetamol every 5 hours as I was under 50kgs at my booking appointment. Despite being about 3 stone heavier by the time I gave birth!

Always have your own for back up!

Sully84 · 29/07/2021 16:40

I took flip flops to wear in the shower.

pheonixrebirth · 29/07/2021 17:49

Definitely snacks but more so the kind of stuff that will get some fibre in your system and make it easier for you to pass a bowel motion. Think flapjacks, prunes etc.
I was very badly constipated after my first and didn't go for 2 weeks Shock I was in agony and passing that was like giving birth all over again- except with stitches !!!!
I would even go so far as packing some senna tablets and suppositories.
Other than that I second pain relief, leggings and bigger sized old fashioned panty girdles, they helped me feel a bit more secure (cos for a little while you may feel like everything is falling out at the slightest little cough)!

FictionalCharacter · 29/07/2021 18:25

Big knicks, maternity pads and snacks.
I was admitted straight from a routine scan very early, and didn’t leave hosp until a week after the birth. I was in for 2 or 3 weeks altogether. I had nothing with me, no hospital bag packed, nothing, so DH had to scratch a bag together the night I was admitted. Poor bloke had to bring me more stuff every day because I kept thinking of things I needed. The food wasn’t good so I needed lots of snacks, especially high fibre ones.
I asked him for maternity pads and he brought me a pack of little panty liners Grin I had to laugh. He had no idea you need a pad that’s more like a single mattress!

ohidoliketobe · 29/07/2021 18:31

Flip flops
Toiletries bag (brush, face wash, deo, toothbrush and paste, shower gel, face cloth in zip lock bag) and a towel (Turkish towels are lightweight and don't take up much room)
Carrier bag for dirty/ wet clothes
Pjs/ nightie
Leggings/ joggers x 2
Tops x 2
Pack biiiiiiiig knickers
Maternity pads
Few changes of vests and baby rows for baby (as well as nappies and hats)
Kindle, tablet, magazines, charger for your phone
Snacks
Those little super concentrate cordial drops are great too to liven up water

ohidoliketobe · 29/07/2021 18:33

Having also had to stay in slightly longer than expected one time as well, a back up bag at home with extra pj's, outfit, pads, and baby stuff for DH to grab and bri g in if needed. Saves a lot of faff and stress!

Quietcrown · 29/07/2021 18:59

Big black pants!

BertieBotts · 29/07/2021 19:01

Loose and comfortable clothes that fit you at a around 6 months pregnant.

Nothing with a tight waistband in case you have a c section.

Tops with boob access if you want to breastfeed.

Pyjamas or DH's clothing or old scruffy things are absolutely fine!

optimistic40 · 29/07/2021 19:36

I think some toiletries, a towel, a phone charger, changes of clothes and nightie suitable for feeding (if you're breast feeding), comfy clothing for getting home. I also had makeup to get some nice pics but forgot about it in the end! Oh and SNACKS!
