Anyone had a gender scan at 16 weeks?

Got one booked very soon, I’ve been excited and the main reason I booked is because I have a slight gender preference so would like to know as soon as possible what we’re having

However, MIL has been going down my ear about how she knows soooooo many people who got told one thing at these scans and another at the 20 week NHS scan and that the private clinic was wrong

I’ve never heard anything like that and all of my friends (8 of them) got them at 16 weeks and all were correct

I know it can happen, but can happen at an NHS scan too!

This has unsettled me a bit and I’m worried it’ll be wrong and then we’ll find out later on but I was so excited for this scan

So please has anyone had a gender scan at 16 weeks? Please tell me it was correct if it was…

Going to quite a reputable clinic I’d just like to add

It's not about accidentally misgendering the baby.

MrsRobinsonsHandprints · 13/07/2021 16:12

@Tangeloincognito

Sex, it's a scan to tell the sex. It is so very important that even on lovely threads like this we use the right language.

Yes.. you wouldn't want to accidentally misgender the poor kid. That would be literal violence.

You misunderstood my post.
Tangeloincognito · 13/07/2021 16:17

So what did you mean?

grey12 · 13/07/2021 16:18

I remember having an early scan with DD1, don't know what week it was and they told us it was a boy Shock

Foxglovesandlilacs86 · 13/07/2021 16:19

@Tangeloincognito

So what did you mean?
She means there is a difference between sex and gender. Biological sex is female/male, gender is girl/boy, pink/blue, masculine/feminine etc.
lockdownbabyx · 13/07/2021 16:20

@Mummy122021 I had one at 16 weeks and it was a very obvious boy! Of course there is a chance they can get it wrong, depends on the position of the baby and if they can get a good look or not. I asked at my 20 week scan to double check and he's still a boy. It's rare they get it completely wrong. If they are really not sure then they will say they are not 100% for various reasons xx

Tangeloincognito · 13/07/2021 16:20

Ok, so they just didn't get the sarcasm in my post.

GeorgiePorge · 13/07/2021 16:28

@SweetSunflowerBoo

I had a gender scan at 16 weeks. Told boy. Same again at 20 weeks But it was OBVIOUS from our 12 week scan it was a little boy 😂
this...^^ was certain at my 12 week scan I could see his was a boy. no hiding it at 16 week scan, now 30 weeks and still a boy!
Songoftheseas · 13/07/2021 16:30

I had a private gender scan at 16 weeks, more for reassurance than being desperate to find out the gender.

We were told that the baby was a girl with 99% accuracy (the sonographer could see the two lines which were very obvious in the scan), however she warned us that with a prediction for a girl there could never be 100% certainty at 16 weeks. However, I was told the same at my 20 week scan and sure enough we had a beautiful little girl who is now nearly 6 😁

lostandlonely20 · 13/07/2021 16:34

I had a scan at 14 weeks and my dr told me he was 90% sure it was a boy. Every scan since he's said he is a boy. I'm 23 weeks now I don't now for definite, but the Dr did point out the penis each time (I've had a lot of scans this time as I lost a previous pregnancy.)

lostandlonely20 · 13/07/2021 16:37

Although I have remembered that one of my Mum's friends was told she was having a girl throughout the pregnancy and when he arrived he was a actually a boy. A friend of mine is pregnant and her Dr won't tell her even though they want to know, and I think that's because she thinks it's a girl but she is not sure. Boys are maybe easier to identify for an obvious reason!

NameChanged15729 · 13/07/2021 16:40

I had one at 16 weeks and it was correct.
My sister had a private scan again at 16 weeks and was told a boy. She went to her nhs scan and was told girl. She went back to the private scan place and was told it was definitely a boy. A boy is what came out Grin

squirrelnutkins1 · 13/07/2021 16:47

Mine was right 😊

User5827372728 · 13/07/2021 16:48

My friend did, was told girl, 20 week nhs one said boy

shivawn · 13/07/2021 18:04

It can happen but would be rare. You'll have your NHS scan a few weeks later to confirm anyway.

MrsRobinsonsHandprints · 13/07/2021 19:30

@Tangeloincognito

Ok, so they just didn't get the sarcasm in my post.
Apologies, sadly it is hard to see the sarcasm today amongst the craziness.
Peach01 · 14/07/2021 00:23

I had one at 16 weeks, same gender confirmed at NHS 20 weeks scan and was correct.

Cafeaulait27 · 14/07/2021 06:04

We had a private scan at 16 weeks to check everything was still progressing ok, and she told us it was a boy (it was pretty obvious!)

We were then told again at the 20 week scan 😌

I’m 27 weeks so he hasn’t come out yet, but it seems pretty certain that it’ll be a boy!

Good luck

Nobranothanks · 14/07/2021 06:39

I had an NHS scan at 16 weeks and unfortunately baby was in such an awkward position that they couldn't see. I then went for a gender scan a week later and they said girl. When I had my 20 week scan I didn't mention that and asked them whether baby was a girl or boy and they also said girl.

She's now nearly 4 😊

Iris2020 · 14/07/2021 11:03

Yes, I think if it's a little boy and you can see it, it's not really possible for it to be wrong! It's very clear, we could see it ourselves.
It is possible for the baby to be in a position that allows you to mistake a boy for a girl though.

Sweetieheart16 · 07/08/2021 18:08

Hi,

I had my scan last week and they told me girl but I think the line is protruding a bit and one of the ‘3 lines’ looks like thigh! Can someone help? I really think it’s a boy! 20 week scan in a few weeks!

bobdidit · 07/08/2021 19:29

I had a private sexing scan at 14 weeks and was told categorically that I was having a girl. Had my scan at 20 weeks and they confirmed I was having a girl too! I think these types of scans are much more accurate these days

Tina8800 · 08/08/2021 09:01

@Sweetieheart16 looks like a girl to me. But the picture is not really clear.
I had my 16 week scan and my little girl was in a very good position so it was easy to see. The 3 lines shows that she is definitely a girl, the boys looks really different.

zeromango · 08/08/2021 14:55

We have a very obvious boy at the 16 week growth scan - went for a reassurance scan on Friday and he double checked and confirmed boy again. We checked before booking a private scan place that the sonographer was fully qualified and he previously worked in the NHS which was reassuring. I think it's pretty rare to get it wrong these days although nobody can ever say 100%!

Sex scan I assume you mean?
