Anyone had a gender scan at 16 weeks?

Got one booked very soon, I’ve been excited and the main reason I booked is because I have a slight gender preference so would like to know as soon as possible what we’re having

However, MIL has been going down my ear about how she knows soooooo many people who got told one thing at these scans and another at the 20 week NHS scan and that the private clinic was wrong

I’ve never heard anything like that and all of my friends (8 of them) got them at 16 weeks and all were correct

I know it can happen, but can happen at an NHS scan too!

This has unsettled me a bit and I’m worried it’ll be wrong and then we’ll find out later on but I was so excited for this scan

So please has anyone had a gender scan at 16 weeks? Please tell me it was correct if it was…

Going to quite a reputable clinic I’d just like to add

I had an NHS scan at 16 weeks and they told us the sex, haven't had baby yet but the sex has been confirmed at every scan since, still very much looking like a boy haha! I'm sure most places will get it right but double check with the clinic if they offer any money back for being incorrect as one near me advertises that they'll refund if they're wrong!

NannyPear · 13/07/2021 12:23

I think at these places they are almost always right. If they aren't sure then they usually ask you to come back the following week for another look. Of course, it's not 100% but I would feel pretty confident in what they say and hopefully it can be confirmed at the 20 week scan if the trust you're in will do that for you. I had a private 16 week scan with both my kids and they got the sex right.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 13/07/2021 12:30

I knew of two people who were told the wrong sex which was one of the reasons I didn't opt to find out. One of the scanners when asked how sure she was snootily said "I have been doing this a very long time you know!" It was still wrong.

Almondcroissant25 · 13/07/2021 12:33

Three of my friends have had them recently at 16ish weeks and all were correct on the sex. The scans are so accurate, one friend showed me the scan photo afterwards - it’s clear as day! It is very rare for them to get it wrong. I’d just look forward to it as it’s a chance to see your baby anyway (and they’ll most likely get the sex correct!) - don’t listen to your MIL.

Hannsmum · 13/07/2021 12:36

Yes at 16 weeks I could clearly see it was a boy though just be ready for any inaccuracies

TheDevils · 13/07/2021 12:38

I know you are saying you're going to reputable clinic but I'd still check you are going to be scanned by a fully qualified, experienced sonographer.
My friend is one and is currently setting up a clinic and she told me that if all you are doing are sex/gender scans then the training is only two weeks!!

Foxglovesandlilacs86 · 13/07/2021 12:41

I was told at 16 weeks with most of mine, 6 out of 8 I think! They were right and it was easy to tell at that development. They are rarely wrong tbh.

Moominmiss · 13/07/2021 12:42

I had a nipt test and scan at 12 weeks where we found out via baby’s dna in my blood test that we were having a boy.

We then had a private gender scan at 16 weeks, but to find out the gender but just to see baby again, we didn’t tell them what we already knew. They confirmed boy.

20 week nhs scan confirmed boy. Then we had a private 4d scan at 29 weeks, still obviously a boy lol.

SweetSunflowerBoo · 13/07/2021 12:43

I had a gender scan at 16 weeks. Told boy. Same again at 20 weeks
But it was OBVIOUS from our 12 week scan it was a little boy 😂

romdowa · 13/07/2021 12:46

It happened my friend this year , private place said boy but 20 week scan with nhs said a girl. I know another woman who had every scan tell her it was a girl and when the baby was born it was a boy. So these things do happen.

Mummy122021 · 13/07/2021 12:52

@SweetSunflowerBoo oooh may I ask how you knew it was obvious at 12 week scan?

After ours when I looked through the pictures I got such a feeling it was a boy! I felt like I could see a boy nub

SweetSunflowerBoo · 13/07/2021 12:55

@Mummy122021
His nub was very obvious and it was straight up

My mother in law was adamant that it was a boy compared to all of her scans (3 boys 1 girl) and she was right

I also had a feeling deep down since convincing that it was a boy. I was sooo certain

sarah13xx · 13/07/2021 13:05

Has mine at 16 weeks to the day because I couldn’t wait a second longer 😂 didn’t tell the people at the 20 week scan what it was until they’d said and they confirmed it

Mummy122021 · 13/07/2021 13:06

@SweetSunflowerBoo thank you! I’ve had such a feeling too and felt like I’ve seen a nub

All of my friends are convinced it’s a boy they’ve compared their boy and girl scans!

So hopefully we’re all right

Also if you want to know sooner send your 12 week scan to the nub whisperer website. Mine was correct and so was everyone on the post I saw it recommended on

Mummy122021 · 13/07/2021 13:07

Thanks for your responses so far everyone

I’m going to try and drown out her comments and remain excited! As I have been excited up to this point

It sounds like it’s more rare that they’re wrong than rare that they’re right! So I’ll take that

I only know one person who was told the wrong sex. They said she was having a girl, and she had a boy. That was 13 years ago though so the accuracy of the scans have probably improved since then!

LakeShoreD · 13/07/2021 13:14

I know a few people that were told they were having girls and they ended up having boys. Never heard of it happening the other way around!

Kc1603 · 13/07/2021 13:17

I had a private gender scan done at 17 weeks. Found out we are having a girl, at my 20 week scan I asked them to confirm gender and they said girl, also had a 4d scan at 27 weeks and they said girl so I am hopefully I am finally having my girl after 4 boys. I am sure you have heard obviously they can't be 100% accurate but just do what you want to do don't let other people tell you yes or no. It's your baby and pregnancy 😊

MrsB2019x · 13/07/2021 13:21

I had a 16 week scan who said girl, 20 week NHS scan also confirmed girl ☺️ She’s not due for another 4 weeks though so still time to be wrong 🤣

sylbunny · 13/07/2021 13:21

I had one with both my pregnancies and both were correct. The reputable ones have actual sonographers doing the scan as a second job or after working in the NHS or private sector for some time.

WhiteHorse92 · 13/07/2021 15:54

Me and my friend both had private gender scans, I had mine at 16 weeks and my friend had hers at 20 weeks I think, both correct. It did take around 15 minutes for the sonographer to see as my baby wouldn't uncross his legs for ages but when he eventually did there was no denying he was a little boy so I knew she was right haha.

MrsRobinsonsHandprints · 13/07/2021 15:59

Sex, it's a scan to tell the sex. It is so very important that even on lovely threads like this we use the right language. Op I've not heard in the last 10 years of the scan getting the sex wrong. It did used to happen because the images were not as clear. So don't worry and enjoy the scan.

This happened to me.

Yes.. you wouldn't want to accidentally misgender the poor kid. That would be literal violence.
