Wanting to feel better about the vaccine

Hi all,

My partner and I have decided for me to get the vaccine after 16 weeks (I’m now almost 14). The doctor said if we wanted to be really careful then their organs would’ve been developed by then.

I can luckily work from home and have been very shielded through the last year of IVF, miscarriage and through this magical pregnancy. I’m 43 so extra concerned about this being the last shot.

My parter is now on sabbatical till I can have both vaccines. But he will need to go back to work soon, especially as I will hopefully be off work with my little one.

So, I just want to believe that I can be better than ok, safer, when I get the vaccine in a couple of weeks and that any side effects are unpleasant for me but my little one will be ok.

Anyone else pregnant and have had it or are planning to have it?

I'm 14 weeks and have my first one booked for Wednesday. I originally had it booked when I was just a few weeks but decided to wait until after 12 weeks. I have researched it and feel comfortable with getting it vs contracting covid during pregnancy but it wasn't an easy decision to make at all

NS1988 · 12/07/2021 13:56

I had my first one when 14 weeks pregnant felt fine after only side effect was a very heavy and sore arm but that went after a couple of days. I have my second one tomorrow when I’ll be 23 weeks hoping a sore arm will be the only side effect again

LemonLemonLemon · 12/07/2021 14:00

Had first jab early pregnancy - no issues at all. Had second one recently at 18 weeks, I had a headache and fatigue for a day, but with rest I was fine the day after.

Starting to become a bit more cautious, whilst balancing still taking my toddler out, him going to nursery and myself and DH in work

sarah13xx · 12/07/2021 14:11

I’m not planning to have it but that’s because I’m due in a month. You’re in a much more difficult position when you still have a good few months to go (especially with restrictions lifting). I think I would have it if I was in your position because it will just be so hard to avoid everyone all of that time. I’m not having a baby shower and not even going inside restaurants at the minute because I just don’t feel it’s worth the risk. This would be no life to live for all those months though 😔

LemonLemonLemon · 12/07/2021 14:13

I’d add as well, I’m sure I had Covid when my DS was a newborn, he was three weeks old and we went into lockdown just as DH developed symptoms. It was miserable and very hard to manage on the sleep deprivation and feeling unwell!
We didnt have it bad, but avoidance of any illness with a newborn is preferable!

Thanks everyone. That’s really comforting to hear c

I had Moderna last Wednesday at 27 weeks. Other than a sore arm for a couple of days I had a bit of a nightly headache, not quite bad enough to need paracetamol and I'm not even convinced it was because of the vaccine to be honest. My second is beginning of September.

CrouchEndTiger12 · 12/07/2021 14:26

43 and first baby? That's so Wonderful!

Try and avoid moderna. It made me very ill and everyone else I've heard who had it too. I'm not pregnant though.

Kittyswhiskers · 12/07/2021 14:28

I give the vaccine and up to May 90,000 women had it during pregnancy in the USA without any safety concerns. I also used to work in clinical trials and I KNOW if there were any concerns they would temporarily halt giving to pregnant women while they investigated. The fact they haven’t done even this is massively reassuring. Finally I’m 22 weeks and had the second one at 13 wks. Side effects WERE awful but I think I’ve previously had Covid (not sure though) they passed in 48 hours. Headache, nausea, weakness and fatigue. I took paracetamol.

bunnypenny · 12/07/2021 14:29

hello - i'm also 43, 17weeks pregnant and will be booking in for the vaccine this week (Weds if i can get an appt).

IndigoJam · 12/07/2021 14:38

I had it at 11 weeks. Moderna. No issues.

LunaDreams · 12/07/2021 14:47

I had my first at 26 weeks. Had moderna- slightly nausea and headachey with sore arm for a day but overall was fine and felt much better for having it.

Watch the Pregnant then Screwed Stella Creasey webinar if you want more reassurance and info. Made me feel a lot better about it

Sheisfee · 12/07/2021 14:55

It’s such a tough decision, especially when our precious babies have to be such a big part of the choice. I’m 34 weeks pregnant now and have had both jabs whilst pregnant - the rising evidence of risk to mum and baby really pushed me into going for it. Also, knowing that the vaccination doesn’t cross the placenta but the antibodies do so baby will have protection when they’re born.

In regards to adverse affects I had a pretty sore arm for both jabs but that was in - remember not to get your left arm jabbed! I did this at 32 weeks and sleeping with hilariously awkward for a night or two.

Garman · 12/07/2021 15:05

Yes loads of pregnant women have had it, I had Pfizer doses at 17 and 21 weeks, no side effects other than a sore arm. Much better than the worry of catching it in third trimester.

Sunflowerx · 12/07/2021 15:16

I had my first pfizer dose the same day as my 20 week scan and my second on Saturday when I was 27 weeks. Other than feeling a bit tired and groggy (which I've felt like for the majority of pregnancy) I've had no issues :) x

Rosieposy89 · 12/07/2021 15:19

I had my first dose at 24 weeks (now 30 weeks), baby is absolutely fine. I was going to wait until baby was born but with cases increasing my hand was forced. The risks of catching covid in pregnancy are known so for me it seems foolhardy to risk not getting the vaccine. Now I'm third trimester I'm being extra cautious.

Narwhalsh · 13/07/2021 09:50

First Pfizer dose ask at 15 weeks and awaiting second dose this week at 23 weeks. all looked well with the baby at the anomaly scan and pregnancy progressing without any other issues (v wriggly baby!)

choccrumpet · 13/07/2021 11:16

I had my first Pfizer dose around 3 weeks pregnant and will be having my second dose around 11 weeks. My midwife also encouraged me to get it and same with my doctor. Better to get it than risk getting ill with covid without in my opinion.

whistlers · 13/07/2021 11:21

I've booked my vaccine for Saturday when I'll be 10 weeks - do you think I'm doing the right thing?

Piecrust32 · 13/07/2021 11:45

I've had both in second trimester, before all guidelines changed so I had the AZ, due to a very high risk pregnancy, had no side effects from both jabs

I'm 32 weeks
Baby is measuring well, looking good

Gyoza · 13/07/2021 13:20

I had first dose of Pfizer at 3 weeks when I didn’t know I was pregnant, had my letter through for next dose at 11 weeks but I’ve decided to delay it until 15 weeks so we’re out of the first trimester, but I’m quite risk averse

Aquarius93 · 13/07/2021 13:26

I had the Pfizer vaccine at 12 weeks (I didn’t wait until then, that was just when it was available for my age group). I had no side effects other than a slightly sore arm and am booked in for my second dose around 20 weeks.

For me it was important to factor in that I’m due in December and therefore there’s a real potential that cases will be rising even more during my third trimester and I want to be protected as much as possible.

SamuelWhiskey · 13/07/2021 14:26

I've had both during this pregnancy - 16w and 27w (AZ). At the time it was only advised for HCPs and in high risk pregnancies so I did put a lot of thought into it - but now I am so relieved to have had it. Rates are soaring right now, and I'm reassured to be vaccinated, especially in the 3rd trimester

pigglepot · 13/07/2021 14:31

I've had both first and second doses of the Pfizer. No symptoms other than tiredness and a sore arm. I'm 31 weeks.

minatrina · 13/07/2021 14:33

I had my first one at 21 weeks OP.

It was really, really hard to make the decision but all the doctors I spoke to (including a specialist immunology consultant) to advised me to get it. I read lots of studies and commentary from academics and researchers (proper ones, be careful not to get sucked in by the pseudo-intellectual anti-vax profiteers!), and it all convinced me that the vaccine was the right thing to do.

I wanted to wait until my third trimester to get it, but ultimately the rapid rise of cases forced my hand.

I had no symptoms apart from an achey arm. Baby is kicking away merrily Smile

It's a really rough time to be pregnant OP and it's such a nervewracking decision - I sobbed before, during and after the jab! But I do feel better now I've had it and have some protection against any covid-related complications. Sending you lots of love and I hope your pregnancy and baby continue to do wonderfullyThanks
