Hi everyone

Got a bit of a shock last week finding out that DH and I are expecting our 3rd baby, our DD is 10 and DS is 9. We didn't think it would happen again for us. I'm 35 and DH is 40, are we crazy having another baby this late with such a large age gap with our other children? Also concerned about pregnancy/labour this time round, I'm classed as obese and scared about pregnancy complications due to age/weight. Just looking for some assurance or helpful info from anyone who may be in a similar position?

I don't think your age is a problem your only 35. Also the age gap is perfectly fine. Congratulations 🥳 don't over think it.

Sunny4876 · 11/07/2021 19:36

I was 6 weeks shy of 36 having dd2 and was obese, all fine.

Sheisfee · 11/07/2021 19:36

I’m 34 and 34 weeks pregnant. My other kids are both going to be 9 at the end of the year! We completely planned this baby and I’m not even sure I’m done yet. You’re not crazy, you’re a really normal age for having a baby and the age gap will be nice as your other little people will be able to help and feel really involved in the new babies arrival.

As for being worried, I didn’t haven’t an other baby for 8 years because of anxiety and ptsd - perinatal mental health team have been amazing, all the care I’ve received has been great and I think being a bit older really helps with the communication and relationships between you and the medical staff.

You’ll be great xx

Sunshinegirl82 · 11/07/2021 19:36

I had mine closer together but I was 36 when I had DS2 and DH was 46. No drama, easier pregnancy than I had with DS1 (despite being 3 years younger with him).

I don't think 35 and 40 is at all out of the ordinary, congratulations!

30degreesandmeltinghere · 11/07/2021 19:37

Meh. I was 37 when I had a ds. And another at 43!!
Congratulations!!

It's really not that old at all in pregnancy terms, I wouldn't be shocked at a friend this age if pregnant. I've also had my much later than you.
imaginethemdragons · 11/07/2021 19:41

Oh my!
33 for my first, 43 for me next!

Old! Not at all!
Crack on flower, you’ll be fine!

Moominmiss · 11/07/2021 19:46

I’m 38 (will be 39 when baby arrives) and 30 weeks pregnant with baby number 4.

My youngest is 7 so a pretty big gap.

I’m also classed as obese by my bmi (30). I’ll be having my fourth c section and have just been diagnosed with gestational diabetes.

But so far I’ve had a pretty easy time of it. I feel no worse during this pregnancy than I did with any of my others and my consultant and midwife haven’t treated me any differently. I’ve never been made to feel too old or anything.

I do feel crazy at times for starting over after 7 years but we’re so excited!

deethra · 11/07/2021 19:49

Hey,
I'm in a very similar situation to you.
I'm 37 and currently 15wk pregnant with our 3rd baby. Our DS is 10 and DD will be 8 when DC3 is born.
I'm also classed as obese, which to be honest was a bit of a knock when my midwife declared that news. I'm overweight, but I wouldn't have classed myself as obese.
That news along with my age did make me worry about extra complications during my pregnancy.
Touch wood, so far things have been fine, I am still very early on though I suppose.

As for there being a big age gap between our previous 2 and this one, I am anxious about how things will change once the new baby is here. But its been amazing to see how excited and involved my DC are in their growing sibling.
I'm trying really hard to keep them involved, so they feel apart of everything.

I guess I don't have reassurance, sorry.
But I felt like I related to your post so much that I didn't want to just read and run.
I also wanted you to know that you aren't alone in your worries and concerns. ❤

Blueskyemily · 11/07/2021 19:51

35 isn't that old is it?! Especially these days.

Congrats OP Flowers

perfectpanda · 11/07/2021 20:01

I'm another one to say blimey, your age is nothing- i had my 1st at 35 and 3rd at 44!! Mind you starting again and the age gap can be a challenge. But on the upside my 13 year old is current putting the little one to bed!

Notaroadrunner · 11/07/2021 20:08

Many women only start their families at your age. 35 is not old. The gap is fine. I have a similar gap and was older than you having youngest. Older 2 adore youngest, though of course they do tease him at times. They've been so good since he was born and, as older teens now they are still great with him. It's great as they can babysit too Grin

SheABitSpicyToday · 11/07/2021 20:13

I understand op! I had my first at 20, now pregnant with number 2 at 27. Partner and I have decided no more after 30 as it just means spending all of our lives raising small children. 35 isn’t old at all but I’m sure it must feel like it when starting again!

Tickly · 11/07/2021 20:26

I have an 8 year gap and was over 40 when I had ds3. It's fab. Kids adore each other and it was waaaaaay easier because I was a relaxed parent with plenty of spare hands. Enjoy!

CurlyNo2 · 11/07/2021 20:28

I had my first at 32 and now pregnant again with my second at 37.

H8theW8 · 11/07/2021 21:00

I had my first last year at 35 and currently pregnant with DC2. I'll be 37 when they arrive. I had such a straightforward pregnancy first time round and am hoping for the same this time (I'm only 4 weeks) x

HayB · 11/07/2021 21:03

Congratulations’

I’m pregnant unexpectedly at 36 and was like you scared of complications due to age but actually they haven’t even been a concern of midwife, my age gap will only be 4 years, however there is a large gap similar between my sis and me with our 2 younger brothers and you wouldn’t even question it now, get on so well and mum said we were 2 little helpers when they came along.

Enjoy it x

AngeloMysterioso · 11/07/2021 21:15

I’ll be 36 when DS2 arrives and I don’t feel too old. I was only 34 when I had DS1

kitkatsky · 11/07/2021 21:23

I have a 10yo abd a 4 month old. The age gap is challenging in that they may as well both be only children but you have two kids a year apart which was prob way harder! I was 36 and obese at start of pregnancy but actually weighed less by the end. Pregnancy was mostly healthy akRt from BP at the end which I also had in my first pregnancy when I was 26 and slimmer. Labour and birth was a breeze compared to the first time

De88 · 11/07/2021 21:45

35 isn't old at all- neither is 40 for a dad! The age gaps are lovely. Your older two will sleep through those tough early days and be able to help out. My older ones were 12 and 7 when my youngest was born, old enough to load a slow cooker, wash salad, empty a dishwasher and walk themselves to and from school, and they can entertain the baby while I do stuff. It'll be fine!

Chelyanne · 11/07/2021 23:20

Congratulations. Of course you're not mad and the age gap will be fine. Good luck

I'm 37 and pregnant with our 6th. Our others are 15, 10, 9 & 6 (twins). Also in the obese category as I piled on weight after a miscarriage last year. Pregnancy is going well (34+5wk now), a UTI has been the only new issue but was sorted with meds. I've been heavier in previous pregnancies and it wasn't an issue with those, my consultants and midwives have not been negative about weight at all. They did put me on blood thinners at 28wk because of age, weight and it being number 6 making me higher risk for clots. I have tried to stay as active as possible inc powerlifting sessions in the gym (been training almost 4yrs now so safe).

ForeverInADay · 11/07/2021 23:21

Congratulations!

I was 36 with my first, 37 with the second. Also very far from an ideal weight, it was all fine.

SmidgenofaPigeon · 11/07/2021 23:26

What are you talking about?

I’m 35 and pregnant with my first. The only thing that meant was that I ticked one of the risk factor boxes for gestational diabetes. Which I don’t have. Other than that no one has batted an eye.

BrilliantBetty · 11/07/2021 23:37

The age gap does mean you're going to be on the school run for a loooong old time.
It wouldn't be for me. I'd be pleased to be at the stage of having 9 and 10 year old and the thought of baby days again would be.. not so great.

But how are you feeling? That's what matters.
If you want this, you can surely make it work!Smile

SmidgenofaPigeon · 11/07/2021 23:38

Sorry OP I did miss the obese bit which can be a risk factor, but your age isn’t.
