Do baby kicks hurt?

Hi! I'm 27 weeks pregnant with my first baby and although I'm feeling loads of movement it's completely painless so far. I've heard other people saying that baby kicks can be very painful though so I'm just wondering is this the case for everyone and if so, at what stage do they normally start to hurt?

No they don't hurt.

Once they get bigger it can be uncomfortable if they get a foot wedged under your ribs or keep bouncing on your bladder.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 10/07/2021 19:05

yeah, they can become painful.
especially if it's just under the ribs or your footling breech baby use your cervix as a mattress pump😱🤣
honestly, I thought his foot would just come through like Tom Hank's bath in Money Pit.

I can't remember when they started to get bad, but by 8m I had had enough with all of them!

Suzi888 · 10/07/2021 19:09

Mine got a bit painful at the end, not unbearable just extremely uncomfortable. Breech baby and the head hurt a bit. I was trying to massage her aroundGrin didn’t work lol

I just thought being pregnant in general must be horrendous with the amount of people I’d heard complaining about it throughout my life. I’m 35 weeks now and can say no they definitely don’t (for me). I used to hear people saying about the baby being under their ribs and everything. I’ve never experienced this at all. The only thing that I’ve found hurts is the lightening crotch feeling I’ve been getting now and again. It’s just a one second shooting pain really low down but the actual kicks haven’t got any worse at all

HasaDigaEebowai · 10/07/2021 19:14

Neither of mine ever kicked hard enough that it hurt.

DoucheCanoe · 10/07/2021 19:18

No pain with #1 but #2 was breech and that was bloody uncomfortable - if it wasn't a head/arm jammed under my ribs it was a foot/leg booting around my pelvis!

DoucheCanoe · 10/07/2021 19:21

It also depends which way they're kicking, mine was kicking a nerve at one point so it felt like an electric shock running through my bones.

Moominmiss · 10/07/2021 19:28

Like others I’d say it depends how baby is positioned.

This is my fourth baby and the only one that’s ever been breech. None of the kicks with my 3 previous babies ever hurt, but I’m 30 weeks now with this one and some of his kicks can take my breath away where they’re so low. I’ve had lightening crotch before, but these are different, these kicks definitely occasionally feel painful. Plus with him being head up I get pain up in my ribs.

GAW19 · 10/07/2021 19:32

DD1 had her head wedged near my hip and it was agony. I could hardly walk by 30 weeks. DD2 had her head wedged in my rib and believe me, that was horrid!
But kicks were never painful! Uncomfortable sometimes but never painful Smile

Bksjshsbbev2737 · 10/07/2021 19:34

No it doesn’t hurt; sometimes when they’re bigger and rolling around under your ribs it can be uncomfortable

Rosesareyellow · 10/07/2021 19:35

Only when they kick downwards. Then it’s like a stab in the vagina 😅 otherwise no. The only pain was under my ribs when I sat in certain positions - driving became tricky at the end, but that wasn’t due to kicks just where baby was positioned. More of an ache than severe pain.

8dpwoah · 10/07/2021 19:39

Only to the extent where you go 'ooh' more in surprise, to me.

I will say though that DD used to love wedging a foot under my ribs towards the end, that was uncomfortable!

TheDinosaurMum · 10/07/2021 19:39

Like many have said depends on how baby is positioned and what they are kicking. A heel kick to the cervix is a bit of a jolt of pain, as is a kick upwards to the bottom of your ribs.

DS used to love hoofing me in the cervix was not a comfortable experience. He always seemed to kick and shuffle.

Now he's 6 and still can't sit still, always kicking his legs or fidgeting. I can't sit next to him on the sofa because the kicking and leg fidgits drive me mad 🤣 they start as they mean to go on obviously lol

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 10/07/2021 19:44

They never hurt me, but there were moments of surprise, like when I got kicked in the diaphragm for the first time, it was unexpected! But feeling kicks and movement was always my favourite part of pregnancy!

DSGBT · 10/07/2021 19:46

I’d say uncomfortable in the late stages but not painful. They make you jump sometimes though and take you by surprise. For me it was worse when they were in an odd position. My DS had his head in my ribs for weeks at the end and that was pretty painful at times!

SpamIAm · 10/07/2021 19:48

Depends where they're kicked. I don't remember it ever hurting with DD, but DS was transverse for a little while and used to just shoot all his arms and legs out suddenly which was really sore.

Rtmhwales · 10/07/2021 19:50

Everybody's different. DS used to kick so bad I'd yell out in pain. Ended up with severely bruised ribs on the one side. He just kicked in the same spot over and over.

Muststopeating · 10/07/2021 19:52

Didn't hurt at all with first two, so definitely not something you have to worry about.

Current baby is a thug though, i swear I actually have internal bruising. Sometimes I get such a good belting I can't sit down! But, to be fair, its been very reassuring to have such an active this baby as I had a hematoma at 20 weeks, so her moving all the time kept me sane between growth scans.

(I could also feel her very VERY early).

dopeyduck · 10/07/2021 19:52

No it wasn't generally painful. My DS was breach (c section birth due to this as he never moved - although in the end other reasons too).
Sometimes he'd shove his feet right down which was painful on my bladder etc but it was because he was short on space etc and he was just trying to move about.
That was at the very end (although he was delivered at 38 weeks)
His head resting right up on my ribs was painful but not related to movement.

NigellaSeed · 10/07/2021 20:03

Ribs and bladder is no fun but I loved feeling and watching his limbs poking out. Creeped everyone out :D Also your lungs get crushed.

PandemicPalava · 10/07/2021 20:04

Mine were very strong towards the end and were painful when DD kicked me straight in the left ribs. Apart from that they were just a force, a thump

MrsXx4 · 10/07/2021 20:22

The kicks don’t really hurt in my case but it’s jabby little elbows or knees scraping across from side to side really makes me feel quite uncomfortable! I’m 36 weeks now and it has had a body part wedged under my ribs for most of the day! That hurts!

shivawn · 10/07/2021 21:20

Thanks everyone! It's good to know that painful kicks aren't an inevitable part of pregnancy!

WhiteHorse92 · 10/07/2021 21:50

Mostly no, but in the last few weeks of pregnancy my baby decided to wedge his foot under my ribs and that did sometimes feel horrible!

ArsendLupin · 10/07/2021 22:20

This baby uses my bladder as a gym ball Confused not painful exactly but uncomfortable to say the least.
