Will it just stop like magic or will it taper off? I can't go on for much longer..

With DD2 mine went at 18 weeks. Until then I could even go for a walk after five minutes I had to sit on the pavement I felt so ill I didn't take any drugs though.

BadZelda · 24/11/2007 09:35

Sounds bad...I had NONE with PG1 - then was sick till 16 weeks with DD2...what worked for me was not eating big meals, eating lots of small snacks (even when I really didn't feel like eating) and small amounts of gaviscon when it got really bad.Feel for you though: it's so debilitating.

3sEnough · 24/11/2007 09:37

It may do either, although mine magically stopped at 14 weeks with ds (and earlier with dd's but you don;t want to hear that!!) I had very occasional nausea after that but it should be pretty sudden when it does stop - I seem to remember it's related to when the placenta takes over (or something like that!)

macaco · 24/11/2007 10:23

Mine eased off at 13 weeks...went from sick about 4 times a day to just once in the mornings but still felt queasy til 16 weeks when it all stopped.

LadyOfWaffle · 24/11/2007 10:25

I was counting the days to the 12 week point, but mine went beyond by a week or so.

Columbia · 24/11/2007 10:31

Oh frosty, I'm sorry and I sympathise. I'm afraid I ticked the days off till about week 20, but it was considerably better by 13 or 14...honestly. I could do 'other things' with it in the background for a while by then. hang in there honey x

Columbia · 24/11/2007 10:32

I was also on stemetil...horrid stuff!

cheritongirl · 24/11/2007 10:42

I had hyperemesis until about 18 weeks when it tailed off- just had to recover my strength after that which took a while! I know it seems like it will never end but it will do at some point soon - i cant believe it now but it is already a bit of distant memory even though only 1.5 years ago..
hope you feel better soon

duvetheaven · 24/11/2007 12:08

Sorry to hear about your struggle with morn sickness. Unfort, my sister struggled for the 9 months with morn sickness. She had to go to hospital for injections as she was losing weight. Child now 4 and built like a rugby player. Have you considered alternative therapies ? Acupuncture or reflexology. Take care

orangehead · 24/11/2007 12:12

Mine tapered off, starting from 13 weeks but didnt totally go till about 16 weeks. Hope you feel better soon

JackBlackRoady · 24/11/2007 12:30

hi frosty i am nearly 16 weeks and still have it although it has got more copable - i am on CYclaziine and also i have been for acupuncture but i am off work as i feel sick/am sick every day. i find smeelling freshy cut lemon helps, as does pressing the acupuncture points, and having a sleep during the day. when i go back to work i hope i can put some weight on. so i sympathsise - thinking of you

frostythesnowmum · 24/11/2007 12:32

I've been off for 6 weeks and am signed off for another 2 - I'm hoping it goes soon cause I don't know what the consequences of being off any longer will be - surely you can't be off for an entire pregnancy?

OP posts:
JackBlackRoady · 24/11/2007 15:29

i was wondering that frosty - my MIL said you can get 6 months sick leave then you go on early maternity - i don't know for certain though. this is our second and was ttc for about 5 years so if i feel dreadful i'm not going back to work. but it is much better than a week ago and i have one week left of being signed off so i think i should be fine. fingers crossed for you too, i have had enough of looking at the toilet bowl as i'm sure you have

hunkermunker · 24/11/2007 15:48

Frosty, ask about Zofran, I think it's called.

daisynova · 24/11/2007 16:18

Sorry to say this but I am 21+3 and still being sick. Stemitil only stops the sickness but not the nauseous feeling and it tends to knock me out so I couln't work.

I have been off work (on and off) for 3 months now and they are getting really nasty to me now - but I honestly can't do much than sleep. I only manage to stay up for about 7 or 8 hours.

Poor dh had me puking all over him last night - god love him. I don't think he appreciated how bad it could get.

So I sympathise x

crokky · 24/11/2007 16:28

frosty I'm really sorry you're being so sick. I am 20 weeks now with hyperemesis and am still being sick although it is down to about once every other day. Once I got to 14 weeks, the major sickness and illness did subside, but it subsided gradually. At the height of it, I was horrendously ill and totally incapacitated, but gradually things have improved. I still feel nausea most of the day (and night), but I can now cope with very simple small things to do.

During my first pg, I was signed off for about 12 weeks in a row and then had many many sick days on an ad hoc basis and started maternity leave very early.

Try not to expect too much of yourself at work as you will be weak and tired.

Hang in there, it will improve, but may not go away. My aim is just to get through it, I don't expect to actually feel "good" until the baby is born. When my first was born, I felt absolutely amazing - the pg hormones vanish really quickly and it is amazing to be human again.

Peachy · 24/11/2007 16:49

Zofran is great but chances are you'll need a referral to an Obstetrician to get it, and probably a period as an in patient (expensive drug sadly).

Ok- have a look at the blooming awful website, i will get you a link in the minute. You will see some experiences on there, and also a drugs section, and a self help section. All these contain lots of usefula dvice, although I am not sure the contact us apge works anymore- however I was one of the contacts so feel free to CAT me at any time (have had HG 4 pissing times now, even if something )God forbid) happened to this pregnancy I swear I could never do it again).

Stemetil is but one of an arsenal of drugs, and many people need to try a few to get the one for them. for example, I was on bucastem which is an oral version of stemetil- made me worse if anything, however avomine was fantastic for me- worked for all 4, although with ds1 I neded intravenous meds first to stabilise.

The good nrews is it could vanish literally any time. The bad is it might not. Nobody knows what causes HG and thats because there probably isn't a single cause- which makes it ahrd to rpedict.

heres that link- takes yu to meds page but you should be able to navigate site from there

And if you need a chat / cry whatever- just yell

Peachy · 24/11/2007 16:50

(PS Zofran, if you can get it, is the ing of HG drugs- do try for it at least!)

frostythesnowmum · 24/11/2007 18:14

Thank-you peachy so much the site is great. I vomit about 3/4 times a day but mainly before I eat so mostly bile so I have not lost that much weight and as dh points out I'm hardly gonna fade away
It's the constant nausea and exhaustion that I find totally awful - I can't work because I'm a nurse and my job is very demanding so need to feel relatively normal to do it. The site mentions how awful you can feel and it is exactly me - thank-you so much for making me feel normal again and not a mental case who can't cope with a bit of sickness.

OP posts:
Peachy · 24/11/2007 18:27

You ARE normal

HG is horrid, makes anyone feel like the pits and worse (you'd be amazed how many of us on here sondifered termination through desperation, there's a few threads in archives about that- and thats for much wanted pregnancies)

The best method for dealing with HG is rest / eat what you can when you can / and focus on hydration as thats the key to being well.

frostythesnowmum · 24/11/2007 18:41

I know it's shocking what you can think - dh said if I wanted to terminate he'd support me and we could tell everyone I'd lost it I was secretly hoping for a miscarriage but never really iykwim. Although I am decided I am never going through pregnancy again no matter what happens.

OP posts:
ConnorTraceptive · 24/11/2007 18:47

You have my full sympathy frosty. My hyperemesis lasted til about 18 weeks although at 10 weeks I did book into a private clinic for a termination but ended up being admitted to hospital so didn't make it. Was eventually given zofran which was wonderful but like peachy said it's an expensive drug and I had to spend a month in hospital and threaten a termination before they would give me it.

Go back to your gp andsee if you can try something else.

Minkus · 24/11/2007 20:46

Oh poor frostythesnowmum I know how awful ms is, it's just so exhausting. Hang on in there it has to get better soon (well after a maximum of 40 weeks ish anyway )

Like Peachy said, you can ask to try something else, stemetil never did it for me either (suppositories or tablets)

I have just come out of hospital with HG, 2nd baby and I'm 8 weeks pg.

For me the Zofran (ondansetron) is the only thing that works although the cyclazine makes me feel pissed as a newt and therefore I get a great nights sleep without waking to vomit so it's also worth a try in my book

Think it depends wherabouts in the country you are as to wheteher they'll prescribe it for you- I'm in Herefordshire and the consultant obstetricians in the county hospital were happy to prescribe it for me once they saw that I wan't lying and the other drugs really didn't work - I really couldn't even talk without chucking up my rectum (sorry tmi)

I think I could psychologically cope with the vomiting if I didn't feel so dreadfully nauseous all the time, that's the awful bit and so for anyone who's gone through even the tiniest bit of morning sickness, I empathise with you cos it really is miserable.

Goo luck frosty and others.

cheritongirl · 24/11/2007 22:41

ooh minkus and connor, you are making me think hard about having another one, but will find out whether i can get zofran prescribed here before even trying! Hope you feel better soon too minkus..

frostythesnowmum · 25/11/2007 12:29

Good luck to to all those suffering - I am gonna go back to gp for something else this week. I've got my NT scan tomorrow so might say consultant suggested ondansetron
Yesterday was awful I lost count how many times I chundered but so far I feel a little better today although admittedly I've only been up 30min! Dh is in a bad mood he can't understand why I'm worse on Sundays - I have tried to explain I'm not worse it's just the only day I have his support so I take advantage of that.
