What do you actually use muslins for?

I keep hearing people rave about how much you need to have muslin cloths but what they don't say is what do you actually use them for, apart from wiping babies face? Do I need them if I plan on FF? Do I just put them over baby while feeding them to avoid spills on them or are bibs better? I won't need them for swaddling as I've got separate items for that. FTM!

My DC both had reflux so they were mainly used for mopping up puke.

They also used them as comforters. 8yo still likes to sleep with a "muzzy"!

nicknamehelp · 21/06/2021 16:57

Over shoulder to save your clothes from baby snot/sick. Hold under chin to catch sick when winding after feed. My dd became attached to hers and used it as a comforter.

MissChanandlerBong90 · 21/06/2021 16:58

I agree that it depends on the baby. I had the sickiest baby in the world for the first 7-9 months. Had loads of them and used them all the time.

Maybe get a small pack of them (I think from memory you can get 3 for £1 from Primark) then see whether you need more when the baby’s here?

AriadnetheSpider · 21/06/2021 16:58

Mostly to put under baby’s chin when feeding and over mum/dads shoulder when burping, to mop up milk/dribble/sick. Our second was and still is incredibly vomity, we use them all the time and he’s 9 months.

They’re also useful as a comforter or blanket on warm nights, and to keep the sun off in the summer. They’re great. I just had cheap ones from Amazon not the massively pricey Aden & Anais though they get rave reviews. It’d bring tears to my eyes to spend so much on what is essentially a sick mop-up rag 😂

doadeer · 21/06/2021 16:58

I liked the really big ones and used as blankets when we were out and my son would sleep in my arms. He wasn't a very sick baby I think I hardly ever needed to change his outfit or anything but they were so soft and comfortable to make him feel cosy

EnfieldRes · 21/06/2021 16:59

Mostly to catch the sick after a feed.

And to dry the bum after wipes / cotton so it doesn't go in to the nappy wet. To avoid nappy rash.

On top of the changing mat so it's not cold to the skin for tiny baby.

Zerorightanswers · 21/06/2021 17:01

Completely vital piece of equipment as PPs have said!

Caspianberg · 21/06/2021 17:02

We used them a lot and Ds was never a vomiting baby.

Use a new one each day to line changing Mat - makes it not so cold and use to dry butt after washing each nappy change. Some days it gets changed a couple of times.

Use as changing Mat outside. Handy to line public changing tables or on grass/ in car.

Line carrycot under baby head of dribbling a lot as quicker to swap for fresh.

Wipes spills. Impromptu bib outside, shade, basic towel when toddler runs into fountain.

The huge ones we don’t use often ( handy lightweight picnic blanket), but the smaller basic white ones where you get x10 for £8 or something are great.

Apparently everything, but I somehow managed to raise two children without owning a single muslin.

nina3638 · 21/06/2021 17:33

no idea. baby is 12 weeks old and i haven’t used a single one. i have about 20 😂 i’m breastfeeding though so maybe it’s that?

DappledThings · 21/06/2021 17:33

I bought a pack of 10 and hardly used them. Was also given a 3 pack of the massive ones which I never had a use for at all.

Neither child was massively sicky so I used the normal size ones a few times but a 10 pack was more than I needed. The oversize ones got no use. I tried the swaddling thing a couple of times and couldn't get the hang of it. Had no desire to cover myself up when bf.

Themostwonderfultimeoftheyear · 21/06/2021 17:39

If you have a refluxy baby you will basically have both shoulders draped in muslins at all times Grin my DS is now 5 and they are so handy as general house cloths.

Chelyanne · 21/06/2021 17:49

I use them instead of bibs in the early days but not for much else tbh.

Deftly · 21/06/2021 17:50

My DC have sensitive skin and react to any wet wipes I've tried so I just use a wet muslin for nappy changes/face and hand wipes. I also use muslins to dry after a change to avoid nappy rash. They're also great household cloths for cleaning/dusting once DC are bigger. Nice and lightweight to get in all the nooks and crannies.

Gonegrey31 · 21/06/2021 18:00

My dd used to associate having a muslin near her face with sleep time , once she was a toddler . It was magic , put a cloth by her and she was straight to sleep !

Sceptre86 · 21/06/2021 18:12

I used them to swaddle dd. Woth ds he would bring formula back up and I used them to clean him up and as a makeshift bib.

endoflevelbaddy · 21/06/2021 19:19

Swaddle
Bib
Hanky
Cloth
Blanket
Play mat
Shoulder cover when burping
Emergency changing mat
Emergency nappy
Cover up when breastfeeding
Tucked between bra and boob when nursing so didn't end up with a soggy front (messy eaters)
Tucked into mattress in carry cot / pram so easily swapped if dribble / posset
Comforter (youngest DD liked a clean one to suck when sleeping)
Giant ones still used as beach towel on days out as dry so quick (eldest now 12)
Excellent buffing / cleaning cloths once the kids outgrow them

HappyAsASandboy · 21/06/2021 19:21

Instead of or as well as a bib
To put on the change mat so it's not cold
To catch spraying breast milk
To mop up spilt coffee
As a picnic blanket
As a placemat
To wrap and carry dirty wet nappies/clothes to the washer
To shade the baby in the pram/car seat
For baby to hold while he sleeps
To play peepo
As a spare nappy when you're out
To make a sun hat when you forget one
To catch baby sick
As a blanket
To wash/wipe we baby or you

THATbasicSNOWFLAKE · 21/06/2021 20:08

5dc and never used them!

Littledoodles90 · 21/06/2021 20:12

They are excellent for straining fruit from home made gin and vodka!

BimiBluebell · 21/06/2021 20:13

I used muslins to swaddle mine. They looked like little Egyptian mummies. They slept much better when they were swaddled.

I had one with reflux, and just used a lot of bibs for that purpose.

Megan2018 · 21/06/2021 20:13

We use a lot and DD wasn’t sicky and EBF. We still use 2-3 most days for wiping faces and spills at 21 months. Much more eco friendly than tissue or kitchen roll.

I had a horrific cold recently and used muslins for my own snot!

roarfeckingroarr · 21/06/2021 20:18

EVERYTHING!

You can never have enouch

LauEli · 21/06/2021 20:21

My little boy (4 in October) uses them as Comforters now, but in the early days they came in handy for everything

Oblomov21 · 21/06/2021 20:23

I certainly enjoyed using mine. Have they gone out of fashion?
