@Gwhiteley sorry to hear that! hard fasting levels are most difficult to control!

i'm not sure about shop bought coleslaw, i haven't tried myself but i wouldn't think there is much sugar or carbs in those?

Bubbles1st · 07/07/2021 18:06

@GWhiteley yes I've been having full fat coleslaw, just be mindful what you eat with and how much.

I've also been enjoying sandwich fillers lately either in salads or on crackers, so good and naughty tasty. Cheese and onion or chicken and bacon Mayo!

If anyone had a heron near them they are good for that kind of food,
Often short life but good value, their ready salads are a fair price too which helps me have a good lunch as I can just grab it and add a bit to it

GWhiteley · 07/07/2021 18:33

That's good to know, thanks @Bubbles1st. At least I know I could have a bit with a ham or chicken salad to stop it tasting plain.

Yea gutted @DressyGerbera, but baby needs to come first so I'm prepared to do it & think about whether I end up bringing my due date forward when I speak to the consultant on the 21st after my growth scan

bewitchingnight · 07/07/2021 19:18

Yes diet controlled here for the time being. I'm 31 weeks and have put on about 5kg, lost some at first with the change in diet but seem to just be maintaining for now.

Coleslaw sounds good I think I'll give that a go too!

Hope you're feeling ok about it @GWhiteley

Good luck for your appointment tomorrow @AdventuresAwait

AdventuresAwait · 07/07/2021 19:27

Thank you @GWhiteley. I was told the same about hunger. My dietician said not to deprive myself of food as we shouldn't be hungry.

That's great @CherLW xx

Thanks @Bubbles1st. We can stand strong together! Have they spoken to you about it already? This will be my first chat with them so not sure how it will go.

Thanks @bewitchingnight. Can't stop thinking about it.

GWhiteley · 07/07/2021 19:34

@bewitchingnight well after taking one after dinner my reading was still high - think I had too much jacket potato 😫 but will just have to see how my fasting reading is tomorrow morning. As long as it's helping the baby that's all I care about

bewitchingnight · 07/07/2021 20:04

@GWhiteley yeah that's the best attitude to have I reckon, fingers crossed for a good reading in the morning x

CherLW · 07/07/2021 20:22

@GWhiteley just think of it as you’re doing your very best to help the baby ❤️ We will do all we can to keep them in until close to our September 3rd Due date!!

Fingers crossed for a good morning reading for you! I’ve been having full fat coleslaw and seems to be ok… I also like the drier coleslaws which usually have a packet of dressing inside a bag of shredded veg.

@AdventuresAwait no one has mentioned it! Not even what the trust guidelines are, other than I won't go past due date.

However I have spoken to a private consultant midwife at my hypno birthing workshop who talked to me at length about my right to refuse induction and even having him early, based on what reasons they give of course. So I feel much confident and empowered to refuse induction and too early delivery. I really don't want to yank him out too soon just to please the consultant.

However, I will happily consider c section post 39 weeks if no risks leaving him that long.

AdventuresAwait · 07/07/2021 20:52

Totally agree @Bubbles1st. Are you on medication or diet controlled?

Firevie · 07/07/2021 21:00

Thanks ladies! I’m so grateful to have found this group. I have been seeing a private consultant also and have a scan tmr so will tell him about the GD. He’s great so I’m grateful I can speak to him tmr about it as well.
You ladies seem so knowledgeable about foods etc. I’d be super grateful for any receipes/ snack ideas/foods to avoid/ etc. Have already made a note of the whole meal tortilla pizza. Thanks in advance

Bubbles1st · 07/07/2021 21:06

@AdventuresAwait medicated unfortunately both metformin and insulin already.

However as the midwife I did speak to was telling me so long as I remain managed and sugars are not problematic then it shouldn't make a difference. To bring diet controlled only.

As I do not want to be induced I'm not to worried about a bigger baby as I will accept a section. However I know things can change from 36 weeks for both good and bad, so I guess just to wait and see where I am at then.

AdventuresAwait · 07/07/2021 22:55

I thought you were @Bubbles1st as I remember us being similar but didn't want to say as I wasn't completely sure!
I feel the same. They also said to me that the main thing is to control the blood sugars and if that's with medicine, so be it.
Oh yes, I'm also asking for a section so I guess size doesn't matter in that regard! I hadn't thought of that.
My main concern is baby being born and having hypoglycemia or early labour.

AdventuresAwait · 08/07/2021 08:08

Good morning!
For those of you who have tried the banana pancakes, what do you pair it with? Thanks!

Moominmiss · 08/07/2021 08:36

I know this has probably been asked before but here goes…

So I only started testing yesterday, first test an hour after lunch was 6.7 so all good, second test after tea was 7.4 so again below the 7.8 so all good.

But this morning my fasting number was 7.1 so well above the 5.3.

What can I do to bring my fasting numbers down?

Bubbles1st · 08/07/2021 09:05

@Moominmiss very little can be done yourself. Fasting levels are the hardest to maintain however things you can try are, exercise after evening meal, experiment with whether a snack before bed does or doesn't work for you. Water when you wake up for a wee in the night.

I'm on week 5 of diagnosis, my fasting reading the morning was 5.6 and that's on 8 units of insulin. I've had a couple of flukes where it was below target but no rhyme or reason. I spoke to GD nurse just now and she just confirmed to keep increasing insulin every 2 nights if it doesn't come down.

Keep yourself some notes on what time your tea was, did you snack or did you exercise after tea. So if your fasting does drop you can see if anything helped.

CherLW · 08/07/2021 09:14

@Moominmiss I try and have a little snack before bed… after my final night reading. I try and have cheese and a few crackers or full fat Greek yogurt and strawberries etc.

Maybe keep an eye and call them? My diabetic nurse said if I have 3 high morning readings in 3 consecutive days I should call.

Thinking of you today @AdventuresAwait!!
I think if I made banana pancakes I would make them with cottage cheese. Or you could have them with yogurt?

CherLW · 08/07/2021 09:15

I woke up this morning and panicked as I had run out of yogurt for work breakfasts!! So I’m now say here having strawberries, raspberries, cashew nuts and clotted cream for breakfast 😂

Scotti84 · 08/07/2021 09:29

If I eat after 8pm my fasting levels are high, they did tell me i should have a fasting time of between 10 and 12 hours and if I eat later than 8 and get up at 5:30 that's nearly on the border, whereas if I get up later and do the first test at about 9am my levels are much better. Might be worth seeing if that makes a difference for you?

Moominmiss · 08/07/2021 09:42

Thank you @Bubbles1st and @CherLW. I guess it’s trial and error with what works for me. I did have my tea a little later than normal last night due to the football and getting caught up with that so didn’t finish eating until 9pm in the end. My reading at 10pm was good though.

I will try drinking some water when I wake in the night though as I’ve actively tried to avoid drinking in the night because it makes me need the loo so much more 😂

I had a yoghurt and a cheese slice for breakfast but my level was 8.1 afterwards so that’s no good.

Feel a bit deflated now. I so admire you ladies that have been dealing with this for weeks.

I just wish I was further along so I didn’t have to think about this for much longer.

AdventuresAwait · 08/07/2021 09:43

Thank you @CherLW! Not long now.

@Moominmiss, I agree with @Bubbles1st. They told me there isn't much we can do for fasting levels as it's all to do with hormones in the early hours of the morning and is often the area people need help with. I'm on 10 units of insulin in the evening and my levels are now below 5.3 every morning. I do snack (paired foods) and drink water in the evening & through the night but I think the morning reading is more out of our control unfortunately.

Moominmiss · 08/07/2021 09:44

@Scotti84 yes I did eat later than I usually would and didn’t finish until 9pm so tested at 10pm.

I then tested this morning at about 7.30am. So not sure if that was a long enough gap. Will make sure I eat tea earlier tonight and leave a longer time for fasting.

CherLW · 08/07/2021 10:03

@Moominmiss what yogurt did you have with your cheese slice?
There is so much trial and error involved but once you know what works for you it will hopefully settle

OP posts:
Moominmiss · 08/07/2021 10:04

It was a Greek yoghurt but a low fat one as that’s all I had. It seems full fat is the way to go though?

Moominmiss · 08/07/2021 10:06

@CherLWhow long do the diabetic team usually give you to try and get things diet controlled? Like obviously trying to find what works for me could take days of eating different things before I get decent readings. I’m worried they’ll just see a few high readings and move straight to medicating. Obviously I’m happy to do whatever’s safest for baby, but I just feel so much pressure to try and get it right, and it seems what I think is healthy just doesn’t turn out that way when I test.
