Hi
First baby due in Sept, I'm just working my way through a list of items to buy. I'm trying to think what is best buying for baby to sleep in upstairs and downstairs? Could I just get a Moses basket that I could move up/downstairs for day/night sleeping? I just think to get two sleeping aids for what could be just a short period of time would be a huge expense. Any ideas/recommendations what others have used would be appreciated.

Yes you could but you'll get a bit fed up of moving it.

Holly91 · 08/06/2021 18:32

Im also due first baby in sept 💙 I’m planning on a Moses basket downstairs and a cot upstairs and like you say moving Moses basket upstairs and popping in the cot as he will be in the cot full time before I know it , have been recommended to do this by many friends as they really aren’t In a Moses basket for as long as you think

Daytime naps we just used pram carrycot attachment or arms! One of the cribs that attach to your bed with the side down (we had a Snuzpod) are great. We only had a normal crib with DC1 and the Snuzpod was the only big thing we bought for DC2, totally worth it.

Never had a Moses basket.

Never had a Moses basket either.

Daytime:

Arms in early weeks
Bouncy chair/pram or hammock after that

Nighttime:

We co-slept.

In the cot full time? Good luck with that!
Lalliebelle · 08/06/2021 18:40

In the day a moses basket is fine for downstairs. At night, mine slept in the baby box for the first few weeks then we upgraded to a cot with a drop side that goes right by your bed as I definitely did not want to co-sleep - was important to me that they get used to sleeping in their own space from the off. What you get probably depends on what's important to you Smile

Just had to reply having seen earlier reply to this - mine was in the cot upstairs after a couple of months for all naps, not sure why the 'good luck with that' comment!
SantoPalo · 08/06/2021 18:54

I'm due first baby in a couple of weeks. I have a snuzpod upstairs and moses basket for downstairs

BlueDucky · 08/06/2021 18:56

I'd get a moses basket but make sure it's suitable to carry up and down the stairs if you want to move it.

Humpty11 · 08/06/2021 18:57

With my son we had a Moses basket that we moved between the bedroom and sitting room, unfortunately he grew out of it just after 3 months and didn’t want to move the cotbed from the nursery into the bedroom so ended up buying a cot for our room. We didn’t find it a faff to move it between the rooms.
This time we’ve bought a Moses basket for downstairs and a next to me for upstairs.

I never understand the push for tiny, premature babies (all human babies are born premature) to sleep independently whilst their parents (grown adults) enjoy the comfort and closeness bed sharing (usually). 🤷‍♀️
NavigatingAdolescence · 08/06/2021 19:08

Sounds highly unusual and rather limiting @Lalliebelle. Each to their own.

Holly91 · 08/06/2021 19:09

@NavigatingAdolescence I’m not thinking it’s going to be easy by any means lol I just meant he will be outgrown his Moses basket before I know it ...
@Lalliebelle hopefully I can get little one into that kinda routine but I n ow all baby’s are different but definitely want him to be used to his own little space as soon as possible

8dpwoah · 08/06/2021 19:14

For number one we used the pram carrycot downstairs for the occasions when she wasn't velcroed to one of us, which definitely wasn't often enough to warrant a moses basket too. And she was in her next to me cot upstairs with us at night.
We have got a moses basket for downstairs for number two because I don't fancy number one trying to be helpful and rock number two to sleep in the pram 😂. DD was small and didn't outgrow her cot or carrycot very quickly, I'm not sure how we'd have got on with this system with a bigger baby.

Nesski · 08/06/2021 19:15

@Holly91 I have the same set up, cot is in the room though and then will move him out at 6 months, didn't have the want to spend more money on something that will only be used for 6 months.

Runkle · 08/06/2021 19:21

Facebook marketplace has plenty of decent second hand moses baskets, cribs and cots. Might be worth a look.

Holly91 · 08/06/2021 19:22

@Nesski yes cot will definitely be in our room for nighttime sleeping until at least 6 months.

Both me and OH move about quite a lot in our sleep so as much as I like the next to me cribs I’m so worried about One of us flinging an arm in there so would rather know he’s close but far enough away to be safe

Nesski · 08/06/2021 19:25

@Holly91 and hopefully easier to transition across as they will be used to the cot!

Chelyanne · 08/06/2021 19:28

We have a cotbed for upstairs as our room is big enough. We have a travel cot for downstairs, it has a bassinet for the early months, fold away nappy changer, mobile and nappy/wipe storage too. Moses basket would be no good with lots of kids and a 32kg dog running around, we only used ours with the eldest.

We’ve got a Moses basket for downstairs sleeping, and a bedside crib for upstairs.

We bought both second hand and just bought new mattresses for both. Saved a fortune and will save lugging a Moses basket or similar up and down the stairs!

Moominmiss · 09/06/2021 13:47

We then have a cotbed in the babies room ready for later on when they outgrow the upstairs bedside crib

Dyra · 09/06/2021 13:58

My plan was to use the Moses basket upstairs and the pram carrycot downstairs.

DD, on the other hand, had very firm ideas about being held while sleeping. So we compromised, and I held her while she slept during the day, and she slept in her Moses basket (but only after 10pm!) at night

Thank you all for your replies and suggestions! :)

Also...if I used the carry cot of the pram for baby sleeping sometimes will that need a sheet in? Just curious as I browse Moses baskets and Moses basket sheets.
