Hi, This is my first post. I am almost 35, 8 weeks pregnant with my first baby (due date mid June), and would like to see if there are any women in a similar postion who would like to post here and share their experiences.

Hello and welcome. I think you'll find you don't count as 'older' round here - congratulations on your pregnancy, you youthful creature you!

(mother of one born at 37 and second at 40)

Twigless · 03/11/2004 19:49

Congratulations .. unfortunately I agree with MI you're far from an 'older mum' .. did you know the average age for a first child is approaching 30 now

(DS born when I was 34, DD at 37 .. who knows when I'll have the 3rd )

Good luck for pregnancy .. enjoy it

aloha · 03/11/2004 19:53

Older? You? Nah! I was 38 and I didn't feel old. I'm 41 now and pregnant and still don't feel old. Though I did get a Damart catalogue in the post this morning, and that did make me feel old

motherinferior · 03/11/2004 19:56

Damart? Pah! M&S is doing its thermal pointelle again, you know, and there's always Patra Silk too...

Now THAT's an old-lady conversation, charleypops. The worst of it is I'm quite serious

Tinker · 03/11/2004 19:58

Youe'r a baby charleypops Am expecting my 2nd at 40

Tinker · 03/11/2004 19:59

You're !

KristinaM · 03/11/2004 20:31

You are just a girl. I had my first at 42 ...its a long story.....

Earlybird · 03/11/2004 20:36

KristinaM - I'm right there with you. 42 for first baby for me too.

Charleypops, welcome to mumsnet. You hardly count as an "older" mum around here!

eidsvold · 03/11/2004 21:15

charley - had my first at 34 and second due any day and I am now 36.. what would you like to know?? although I agree with the others - 35 is not old despite what the medical profession says or thinks

charleypops · 03/11/2004 22:04

gosh! just been to have dins and come back to all these fab messages!!

Thanks for the lovely welcome! You've made me feel great! Congratulations all of you for your babies! Good luck Eidsvold with your labour. I don't feel old at all, (not quite ready to go fingering the pointelle and winsiette at M and S yet), but since I discovered I was pg a couple of weeks ago I've been searching the net for information, (probably too much, making myself worry), and reading stuff about "old eggs" and stuff. I certainly feel more relaxed now! It's very encouraging to hear that a lot of you have had more than one too.

It's reassuring to know also that the average age was almost 30. I posted here after reading some of the "Due in June" thread, everyone there the past couple of days seems to be on their second or more and still in the early/mid twenties.

I guess it's just all so mindblowingly new for me, I'm completely clueless and it's going to take me a while to get used to it! I have my first appointment with the midwife on Friday so I guess I'll know a bit more about what's going on then..... x

Charleypops, come back and visit us again on the due in June thread. Honest, we're not all youngsters - in fact there's quite a few of us in our thirties (and all the better for it - fine age to be!).

Congratulations on your pregnancy - you must be due about the same time as me, as I'm 8 weeks pregnant too.

Nikkichik · 04/11/2004 10:42

Congratulations Charleypops. 35's not old! I had my first at 35! Now 38 and trying for No. 2. I did worry about being and 'older mum' but the doc/midwife took no more notice than with anyone else so I figured I shouldn't worry either. I guess it depends on your general health! Know what you mean about feeling clueless - just remember that you can read too much!! It's a long wait til the first midwife appointment isn't it? How is the Dad - is he being supportive or hasn't it hit him yet!!!

charleypops · 04/11/2004 12:19

HI

Good luck with your endeavours Nikkichik (hope you're having fun!) Yes, it's been a LONG wait to see the midwife, thank goodness it's finally only tomorrow! My other half is overjoyed, we've actually been trying for over a year and the tension was really beginning to bubble through. He's been working away for the past couple of months and only manages to get back for the weekends but when he's here he's brilliant! I just have to say "Beanie wants a cup of tea" , or "Beanie fancies a beetroot" (beanie being the babe) and he gets me it! I'd better not push it though.....

MrsWednesday, congratulation to you too! I'll catch up with you on the June thread!

charleypops echo others, you are not old. I had mine at 35, 37 and 39. Welcome to MN.
Not sure what you want to know (everything??) but with no2 and 3 I was offered an amnio as an automatic thing (not cause of any testign concerns) but refused it as wanted to avoid invasive testing. Had blood tests tho not sure why as prove nothing.
Never had any comments that I was an older mum except once in hospital with no1 from stupid consultant (male) who sniffed and said that in view of my age he should see me again...no idea why!
Other than that Iwas fine, in fact never better as ditched unhealthy lifestyle (coffee, alcohol) once pg and had a lot more energy.
good luck with the mw.
Cx

welshmum · 04/11/2004 12:39

Charleypops congrats and can I echo Mrs Wednesday's invite to join us on the June thread. I need you over there! I'll be 41 if this one arrives safely and had my first at 38 - and you're right they are mostly younger than us but who cares - we're all very friendly, supportive and in this together!

LipstickMum · 04/11/2004 12:47

I will '3rd' what Mrs W and WelshMum have said. DO come over anf join us on the due in June thread. It is so, so supportive having a little group of people going through exactly the same as you are, whether its 1st, 2nd or 3rd baby.

Hope to see you over there soon

PS. Oh, Congratulations!!

janinlondon · 04/11/2004 13:00

In 2002 in Westminster in central London 65% of births were to women over 30 and 27% to women over 35. At the Chelsea and Westminster they don't even blink unless you're over 45. You're a spring chicken!

charleypops · 04/11/2004 13:05

Hi Everyone

I like your attitude! I've decided not to think of myself as an older (hopefully) mum - just a mum. One of the reasons I felt motivated to start this thread was that the pregnancy magazine I'd bought lately and "Emma's Diary" which the health centre gave me only had profiles of mums under about 30. Any reference to women my age seemed to be about deterioration of eggs and huge proportionate rise of possible problems with the baby. So I felt a bit sidelined. I'm so glad I posted though, and I'm sure anyone else who feels like me will draw a lot of support and reassurence from your messages! Thank you!

You are not old! I had ds when I was 38 and sailed through my pregnancy. None of the suggested horrors of being 'elderly' materialised for me, not even a stretch mark. Despite midwife telling me from 36 weeks that ds could come any day what with my age and everything (her words), he very consideratley came on his due date, clever boy. So relax and enjoy it.

charleypops · 04/11/2004 14:01

Hi

I cannot post on the June thread!! I've tried about a dozen times, closed all other applications, turned off the images, emptied my cache, but when I scroll down the page (to get to the message box), it alway sticks half way down then completely freezes!! If I click on "add a message" nothing happens at all and it again freezes. I wonder if it's 'cos I have a Mac? Any suggestions?

Hi Portree! Did you use any cream or oil on your bump? I'm quite small, (size 6/8) so expect I'll be susceptible to stretch marks.

OP posts:
welshmum · 04/11/2004 14:04

Ah-ha that explains it Charleypops - we've specifically asked that noone who's a size 6/8 joins the June thread
Hope you sort it out soon

welshmum · 04/11/2004 14:04

I meant sort out the computer problem.....

charleypops · 04/11/2004 14:08

LOL

But I'm really ugly, covered in warts with scary ginger hair and a humpback! x

I know, according to many magazines and articles once you're past 35 forget it - you and your eggs are old, old, old and the chances of your baby having something wrong are increased. It's enough to put you off really, so be careful what you read!!!!! However, that's what threads like this are so good - you/we are not alone.
