Hi there. Please don't judge I am a 24 year old first time mum but found out pretty late I was pregnant at 4months. My urine sample came back with cannabis in and my midwive said Social Services will need to be informed. I am scared s*less at this prospect. The midwive said SS will more then likely direct me to Narcotic meetings and then nothing further. I am just so worried the implications!!! Does anyone have any experience in this at all? Any social workers our people that have gone though the same. I have not touched it since as I am not addicted just recreational but obviously now I know I am pregnant do not use.

I really don’t think you have anything to worry about. Cannabis is mainly used for recreational, occasional purposes and as long as you test negative for subsequent tests you will be fine!
I must say I wasn’t aware that urine was routinely tested for illegal drugs during pregnancy.

Chelyanne · 08/05/2021 18:35

If you have stopped use and avoid being around people who do use then you are unlikely to have any problems going forward.

foxyroxyyy · 08/05/2021 18:35

Why did they test you for cannabis? Seems intrusive unless they have cause for concern?

ThisMustBeMyDream · 08/05/2021 18:37

There is no routine drug testing in the UK maternity services.

4PawsGood · 08/05/2021 18:39

Are you in the UK, OP?

Kitkat151 · 08/05/2021 18:48

This wouldn’t happen in the uk....not routinely

Worriedly2 · 08/05/2021 18:53

I recall being asked about any potential drug/drinking habits in the booking in appt but not tested. Was rested for smoking everytime even though I've never touched one in my life

Hallyup6 · 08/05/2021 18:53

Midwives can't test urine for cannabis. The only way she'd know is if you told her that you use it. You'd likely be allocated a specialist drug liaison midwife and SS would be informed but something isn't ringing quite true about what you've posted.

UnmentionedElephantDildo · 08/05/2021 18:56

It's not a routine test in UK, so he reason the test was requested, which OP may not wish to disclose, is probably going to be relevant to how much attention SS will pay.

OP: are you a regular user, and have you thought about what a good opportunity this would be to quit? At least for whilst your DC is very small. Do you think SS would be able to support you in that, or have you other ideas?

MintMatchmaker · 08/05/2021 19:04

What led to the test being done OP?

Florelei · 08/05/2021 19:14

Did you give consent for your urine to be tested in this way?

FlorrieLindley · 08/05/2021 19:23

Where do you live?

BumpOnWheels · 08/05/2021 19:42

If you was purely a recreational smoker but have now ceased using it you have nothing to worry about.

I'm curious why they drug tested you though? It's not routine.

Jessie0012 · 09/05/2021 11:11

Sorry I should of given more context. It is becI had explained when she asked about smoking cigarettes or drugs I thought it was better to be honest but I didn't explain the situation.

Jessie0012 · 09/05/2021 11:12

When she was asking about drinking smoking ect I did explain that due to knowing there could be some in my system. I thought it was better to be honest but now I wish I hadn't.

Fixitup2 · 09/05/2021 11:15

It’s good you were honest. You have nothing to worry about, you’ll likely get a phone call and maybe a home visit but very unlikely anything else.

Jessie0012 · 09/05/2021 11:16

When my midwive was asking about drinking, drugs etc I did explain that until 1 week prior which is when I found out I was pregnant I did smoke recreationally. I have totally stopped and will continue once baby is born as priorities have now changed. I just feel slightly trapped as I thought it was better to be safe then sorry for my baby and for the midwive to know. I wish I just said nothing now.

CausingChaos2 · 09/05/2021 11:16

Smoking and drug tests are not compulsory in pregnancy. Honestly if you stopped as soon as you realised you were pregnant, then that’s the most important part. Any further tests will be negative now, but you don’t have to take them unless you want to prove so.

Jessie0012 · 09/05/2021 11:20

When asked about drink, drugs smoking etc I explained that until 1 week before I had smoked cannabis but that I have now stopped. I did ask how long it stays in the system and she said roughly a month so I had assumed that would be it. I have another app in 3 weeks so they are most welcome to test again as there will be nothing in my system. I just feel slightly gaslighted as I did explain I had stopped as soon as I found out I was pregnant. I did also explain that obviously now priorities have changed that's it for the partying life style so to speak.

Jessie0012 · 09/05/2021 11:22

OK thank you! No I will 100% take another one as I just want this cleared with.

otterbaby · 09/05/2021 11:29

I think it's probably best that you were honest. If you're not using going forward, you won't have much to worry about! If they do ring, just explain you were using recreationally until you found out. I'm not sure but they might test your urine going forward.

I know it's frustrating but unfortunately they need to be sure as there will be plenty of women who wouldn't be honest about it ☹️

Girlmama3 · 09/05/2021 11:40

Honestly don’t worry. You are honest which they’ll appreciate. They have to follow it up because sadly there are women who don’t stop like you have.

They’ll probably have a chat, maybe retest and sign you off x

Maggiesfarm · 09/05/2021 11:51

I can't imagine social services being bothered about this. Don't worry about it (& don't be so flipping honest in future!). You're not smoking now, that's what matters, the tobacco is more damaging to health than the cannabis and that is legal.

dopeyduck · 09/05/2021 12:00

You were right to be honest to the midwife, the health of your baby comes first. It’ll look good to social services that you put health implications first. You’ll get a phone call or a visit from SS and I think you should be honest to them to. They’re not going to take your baby, they just need to make sure they’ll be safe and well cared for and that if you need any support they can get it arranged for you. If it was occasional and you’ve stopped then they’ll likely just close down the case.
Honesty is always the way forward. 99% of issues can be sorted.

THATbasicSNOWFLAKE · 09/05/2021 12:21

Are you in the uk? Never heard of this!
