Conceiving over 35

Hi all,

There's probably already a load of threads about this but here we go......

I'll be turning 36 in June and DH and I have decided to start trying again. DS will he 9 this year, but we've waited so long because his birth was truely horrific and DH has refused to even entertain the idea of a second until now. I think he had the 'worst' of the situation as I was kinda out of it and wasn't really even aware of just how wrong things nearly went until a few years ago, DH didn't want to talk about it.

The push I think he needed was sort of the 'now or never argument', but i'm now worried that we might have waited too long.

Any others trying to conceive at over 35? Success stories? How long did it take? Are the odds really as bad as they seem?

Now that DH is convinced i'm impatient for it to happen lol Thanks everyone x

Im 36 and been ttc for 4 cycles. We're trying SMEP next cycle.
My 1st DC took 5 months to conceive when I was 20.

Thanks again to everyone for all your wonderful comments. I'm definitely feeling more hopeful.

I do have a question/doubt that I eonder if anyone more knowledgable about fertility could answers.

I just read this in regards to a 31 year old asking a similiar question to mine.

"For someone your age there is a maximum chance of 30% per cycle with perfect timing (sex at least once in the 3 days before ovulation)."

Which got me thinking if the odds are really that low? And also if the odds are 30% given having sex once within 3 days of ovulation, does that mean that having sex on more days would significantly increase the odds?

DH are honestly going all out. According to my estimates I should be ovulating today, with a fertile window from Sunday to Friday, so we've had sex everyday since Sunday just to be sure Grin sorry tmi. Or are we doing this wrong? Should we abstain for a few days and have sex closer to the ovulation day?

Thanks in advance for answers x

They say best to let the swimmers build up a bit rather than sex every day. Elevating your legs after can be helpful too.

We only had sex twice in the month we conceived this one lol, once early in cycle and once closer to fertile window and I was quite surprised by the bfp. My husband is military and away a lot so daily is not possible for us anyway.

I'm 36 now and 33 weeks with a surprise after being told for nearly 20 years that it would be fertility treatment or nothing. Came off my pill in August as it really wasn't agreeing with me and pregnant in September!x

jennyt82 · 21/04/2021 12:40

I had my first 3 children when I was 27,29 and 32. I fell pregnant with my surprise 4th at 39!

GrandTheftWalrus · 21/04/2021 12:42

Hi I'm currently 36 and I was 35 when I fell pregnant.

I had a mmc last year in May with a surprise pregnancy I found out at 11+4 that baby had gone at 7+4. So after that happened I then had 2 periods and along came this one. I'm 37+1 right now.

Again that was without trying, we had actually planned to start trying in September but this one had other plans.

With my 4yo again we didn't try and it was a surprise. I was 31 when I fell pregnant with her.

Mumtotwofurbabies · 21/04/2021 12:46

I conceived my first at age 31, 1st month trying. Now I’m 35 and the history is , conceived first month trying (again!) but sadly miscarried at 7 weeks, then conceived again on 2nd month trying and miscarried again at 7 weeks. Now pregnant again after conceiving on the 1st proper try again...only 5 weeks but really hoping it sticks. So no issues getting pregnant, more issues staying pregnant 😢.

hewegoagain · 21/04/2021 13:48

@Mumtotwofurbabies i'm sorry for all your sadness. I hope everything goes well with this one. Good luck hun x

@hewegoagain I am currently 22 weeks pregnant with my second at coming up for 38 years old and I have a 9 year old DS too. I fell straight away with DS but it was different this time around. I fell on month 13 but miscarried at 5 weeks. I then fell again on month 15 which is the baby I am now carrying

LCDIT · 21/04/2021 17:39

For some weird reason I always thought I'd struggle to conceive. Had one unplanned pregnancy age 37. Next two pregnancies I used the purple Clearblue ovulation kits which I swear by and conceived both times on second cycle. Sadly two of the three pregnancies ended in miscarriage. Hopefully I'll be third time lucky, almost at the end of the first trimester now.

Mumtotwofurbabies · 21/04/2021 18:37

@hewegoagain thanks! On the positive side no issues with conceiving over 35, think the two were just one of those things so sure I’ll get there eventually. Just thought I probably scared you with a doom and gloom story 🤦‍♀️

hewegoagain · 22/04/2021 07:36

@Mumtotwofurbabies not at all. I'm a firm believer of considering all the facts. Thank you for sharing Smile

I seem to wake up with questions everyday. This one regarding cycle length. I decided to go back through my flo app last night to check out the length of my previous cycles. They're really irregular. Anywhere from 22 to 29 days over he last 18 months. How does that effect fertility? Will we find it harder tc because of this? Also i've seen some other threads where 'concieve plus' vitamins were mentioned. Has anyone used them? Are they worth it? They seem a bit expensive, at least in my country.

Hello! Ds is now 12 and I am pregnant with my 2nd. It took us about 5 months to conceive. I'm 37, will be 38 when baby is due! Goodluck!

Sophieandtiger · 22/04/2021 08:15

@hewegoagain i was worried it would take us a while to conceive DC2 as my cycle became quite irregular after DC1 (27-35 days) when it was exactly 28 days to the day every month before. It didn't affect anything, both were conceived as quickly. The only thing it does is make it slightly trickier to know when you're ovulating but you can use ovulation sticks for that. Hope it helps, fingers crossed for you!

OneRankSuperior · 22/04/2021 08:47

Took a year at 35, first month of trying at 39. No miscarriages, stRaightforward pregnancies, perfectly healthy DC. I know loads and loads of mums who had babies after 35!

Garman · 22/04/2021 08:50

I had dc1 at 29 first month ttc, dc2 at 32 (had a chemical pregnancy first month ttc then conceived again next cycle). At 35 last year we conceived by accident despite using contraception, ended in miscarriage and we decided to try again, conceived 2nd month of ttc (2 months after mc) just before my 36th birthday.

Palaya · 22/04/2021 09:19

Conceived all of mine within the same month of trying including one which needed in a MC. I was 32 ( child born when I was 33 ), 35, 38.

Rubyrecka · 22/04/2021 12:14

I'm currently 17 weeks pregnant conceived at 35. I can't tell you how long it took as we weren't monitoring but I had a miscarriage around 3 years ago.

35 is fine to start trying it's not too old despite what you read. You may have a few more risks associated with ageing but hopefully all will work out. For example my downs screening came back low chance and I thought cos I was on the precipice of the magic number that it would be high but all good. Good luck 😉

feistymumma · 22/04/2021 13:19

Hello, I am 45 and we weren't exactly trying but neither were we using anything for about two months. Conceived the second month. Good luck with it.

Blughbablugh · 22/04/2021 13:44

I'm 38 and will be 30 weeks pregnant tomorrow with baby number 2. I sadly had an early miscarriage last August but both that and this pregnancy were conceived 1st month trying. Good luck!

Natty47 · 22/04/2021 14:57

I started TTC for the first time at 38, got pregnant after a few months and have since turned 40 during the pregnancy. All has so far been textbook healthy (including low risk prenatal screening of the baby) and am due to give birth next week.

It probably took about 10/11 cycles for me to conceive but I later found out that most likely only one of my ovaries was working due to an undiagnosed non-age related condition (a large ovarian cyst). So considering age and health condition, it was actually very straightforward.

I found that after years of really regular cycles, during those months of TTC my cycles coincidentally became irregular, and my ovulation was quite often pretty late in the month. For me, taking star flower oil seemed to regulate my cycle back towards 28 days and brought ovulation earlier to a more normal time. I only found out I was ovulating late when I started using ovulation sticks, so for me those turned out to be essential for tracking my fertile window.

Good luck with your TTC journey!

whatswithtodaytoday · 22/04/2021 15:03

First pregnant at 37, took four months trying. Most of my friends have conceived post-35 with no problems, less than six months. Obviously there are some who've had fertility problems, but actually they all started trying before 35.

Your fertility does not drop off a cliff.

SB2021 · 23/04/2021 22:23

Got pregnant with my fourth baby at 37. I'm now 38 and he's nearly due. Conceived on the third try, and I've felt just as well as I did when pregnant in my twenties and early thirties. A little more morning sickness this time around, but that's it! I've also worried a lot less! =)

jennymac31 · 24/04/2021 02:37

Took 6 months of ttcing to fall pregnant with DC1 (age 32) and 5 months of ttcing to fall pregnant with DC2. I took prenatal vitamins for both and did use 'concieve plus' lube when ttcing 2nd time round, which I did think helped as I was expecting it to take longer to fall pregnant 2nd time round.

Smileandtheworldsmileswithyou · 24/04/2021 02:41

I started trying for my second baby in September when I was 34 and fell pregnant straight away.
