Hi all, just hoping to get some experiences or advice with anyone who has had a SCH before?
I am 7+2 and had a scary bleed on Sunday but had a scan yesterday morning and baby is fine!! But I was told I have a large SCH which is measuring at about 6cm by 5cm.
I have basically been put on bed rest for 2 weeks until my next scan and they are hoping it would of reabsorbed back into my body slightly by this time. I am so scared to have another big bleed as I know this can cause a miscarriage :(
Any experiences or positive stories would be great! Xx

I had two sch pockets in my first pregnancy. Between placenta and uterus. Can't remember how big each one was. Was put on bedrest for a few weeks. Had first bleed at 12 weeks (bright red new blood) and a few later (brown blood - old). No bleeds past around 25 weeks. At later scans the sch had gone. Healthy baby boy born at term.

Best of luck OP. Don't Google, as some negative stories around!

SpiceGirl93 · 20/04/2021 14:49

Hi @StarFriend thanks so much for replying! I know google is just the worst isn't it.
Was your 12 week bleed bad? Honestly mine was so bad on Sunday I was so shocked to see a healthy baby still inside! Fingers crossed the bed rest works and it has shrunk in the next few weeks.
How was yours diagnosed in the first place? Was you just having a normal early scan for reassurance? X

Hi OP

I had a sizeable subchorionic hematoma when I was pregnant with DS who is now 3, I can't remember the exact measurements but they wanted to keep a closer eye on it. Fortunately I didn't suffer any bleeds at all and it was reabsorbed by itself with no issues. DS was born at full term the picture of health.

I'm 12.3 weeks pregnant with another baby now and have the same but smaller this time. No bleeds at all yet (touch wood)

The sonogropher told me, today as it goes, that some bleeding with a sch is normal and to be expected. It's not generally a cause of alarm unless the bleed contains clots.

Hope everything goes ok for you x

WeAreAllCompletelyFine · 20/04/2021 15:45

I had a huge bleed at 8 weeks, NHS wouldn't see me because I wasn't in pain. I had a private scan which confirmed baby was alive but I had a large SCH. No advice was offered except to tell my MW. I bled for a few more weeks on and off and we paid for a private scan every week for about a month.

I informed the MW but she wasn't interested. I'm amazed at people being put on bedrest as I don't think it was even put in my notes.

The baby was fine and healthy and I didn't bleed again after about 12 weeks.

It's so worrying at the time - I'll never forget that awful feeling of waking up overnight with what felt like uncontrollable bleeding and assuming I'd lost the baby. It can work out OK though, fingers crossed for you Star

SpiceGirl93 · 20/04/2021 16:12

Hey @Winterbaby21 thanks for sharing! It's so reassuring hearing positive stories. Also good to hear you didn't and haven't experienced any bleeding!

@WeAreAllCompletelyFine it's so terrifying isn't it. I honestly don't think I can wait two weeks until my next scan! I thought the bleeding had completed stopped today but just had a little bit more :( did you do anything to help reduce it? I'm so glad everything worked out well for you as well! I just want to get past these next few weeks so hopefully baby will be big enough to be an immediate threat.

@SpiceGirl93 I bled from 5 weeks until 11 weeks. Enough to use a pad and whenever I lifted anything slightly heavy I felt a gush of blood. Was diagnosed with sub chorionic hematoma at 6 weeks. It bled out and was gone by 12 week scan. I'm 34 weeks pregnant now. Never had it in my previous pregnancies. Fingers crossed it will be fine.xx

SpiceGirl93 · 20/04/2021 16:27

Hey @Mishmased ah that makes me feel so much better. Honestly today is the first day I started like doing a bit more (as the bleeding practically stopped) and I've started bleeding again so now I'm like too scared to move! Sad how did you stop the bleeding? By just like laying down for a bit? I'm like too scared to even stand In the shower for too long!

OP posts:
Mishmased · 20/04/2021 16:33

@SpiceGirl93 you need to take it easy. We did nothing but I remember at work we were moving files and records offsite and every time I lifted a box I felt the gush of blood. Doctors think it bled itself out because I bled consistently for 6 weeks. I had a miscarriage 8 weeks before and was convinced that I was having another but I wasn't. Try not to google just rest.xx

SpiceGirl93 · 20/04/2021 16:37

@Mishmased I also had a miscarriage in December so I think that's why I'm extra paranoid. That was a missed one though so I've never experienced the bleeding before. Sorry if TMI but on your bad days how many pads were you going through? Was it like a period amount?

OP posts:
Mishmased · 20/04/2021 16:45

@SpiceGirl93 I completely understand your worry. On a bad day I would go through 1 pad and a pantyliner if I do any lifting. Without lifting I used maybe up to 3 pantyliners. Some days were heavier than others. Just checked my notes and I had another scan at 9 weeks that mentioned the hematoma but didn't mention size.

SpiceGirl93 · 20/04/2021 17:29

@Mishmased yeah I think I'm gonna be similar.... I don't actually think the bleeding is a bad thing (because essentially it's one way of getting rid of it).. it's just if it gets too heavy right? Xx

OP posts:
Mishmased · 20/04/2021 17:32

@SpiceGirl93 I don't think so either but hindsight is great. How heavy is your bleeding? Have you any pains?

SpiceGirl93 · 20/04/2021 17:46

So I hadn't bled all day and pretty much thought I was safe again so I just started walking around a bit more and doing some cleaning and then got another rush Sadbut since then I have been laying down and it doesn't feel like any more has come out. Nope, thankfully no pain at all! X

Sorry @SpiceGirl93 if I didn't make that clear. I meant you're right I don't think the bleeding is a bad thing. Apologies if I didn't make that clear. Hopefully it will stop soon and be gone by your next scan.x

HarrietM87 · 20/04/2021 20:12

I had one in my last pregnancy (after 4mcs and 1 baby, so I was convinced was mc5). I had a big bleed at 10 weeks. Hospital wouldn’t scan me because it was lockdown so I had to wait 2 weeks for a private scan, bleeding and cramping the whole time. Baby was fine and scan showed remains of a SCH that had basically bled out. Baby is 6 months now and all good! The rest of the pregnancy was straightforward.

Mishmased · 20/04/2021 21:08

@SpiceGirl93 I remember that sensation. Bed rest it is for you and great there's no pain. You need to listen to your body and put the feet up at least for the next few days.x

@HarrietM87 two weeks for a scan that's so long. Mine started just before 5 weeks and EPU don't scan until at least 6 weeks and they gave me a date for 9 days later. I thought I was going to go mad waiting but like you baby was there thankfully.

SpiceGirl93 · 20/04/2021 21:37

@Mishmased yeah I think that's what I'm going to have to do! It's just horrible literally living in fear everyday until the next scan
isn't it! X

@HarrietM87 oh my gosh I can't believe you had to wait 2 weeks I would of gone absolutely crazy! Did you bleed continuously for the whole 2 weeks? X

@SpiceGirl93 there's loads of good stories here so high hopes. I will be keeping my 🤞for you.xxx

HarrietM87 · 21/04/2021 12:50

Yes it was early lockdown last year - start of April so everything was properly closed. It was horrible! I bled on and off. The first bleed was like a proper gush, then spotting after.

StarFriend · 22/04/2021 22:56

Hi OP, weirdly my bleed was the evening of my 12 week scan - where I'd seen a wriggly baby. No pain, no warning just a gush of blood. Then some red blood spotting over night. I can't remember if the sch was mentioned at that first scan. I have a feeling it wasn't (ten years ago so memory is hazy). Waited a few days for a follow up scan due to the bleed where I was told straight away that my baby was fine, but that I had two sch and was then put on bedrest. Bled brown blood on and off then for a little while. The first scan was by a sonographer. The second scan (that was only arranged due yo to the bleed) was done by a consultant.

Best of luck OP.

Jellybean81 · 22/04/2021 23:04

Just to add another hopefully reassuring experience. In my first pregnancy I passed a clot about the size of my hand at about 9 weeks. Took it in a tub to EPU who said to prepare for the worst and there was baby wiggling away.
Carried on bleeding pretty much every time I did any walking etc until about 14 weeks so took it very easy.
I went to EPU every time I had a bleed - so every Monday after trying to walk on a Sunday, they were happy to scan me.
Eventually baby got bigger than the bleed and it just went away.

bbb2019 · 22/04/2021 23:32

Hello! I have one. Currently 19 werks- I have had three big bleeds since 10 weeks and every night I have a small gush that requires a pad change (I have a low lying placenta so the theory is it moves a bit to let the blood escape when I lie). It was small, then got bigger now has got a bit smaller. Initially no one really knew what to do with me but I’ve had a couple of extra scans now and have my 20 week scan, then another at 24 weeks. I don’t think there’s much they can do until the baby is viable which is horrible.

Some things my consultant told me- it doesn’t really matter about the colour of the blood. Clots are to be expected (I’ve had some). If it’s a big bleed go and get checked (or outside of your normal). There are increases risks the most with blood loss and it causing a miscarriage. However I’m trying to be positive and think she can get through the blood loss I’ve had (and it’s been bad) she can get through this.

Oh I haven’t been put on bed rest apparently jury is out on if it’s effective but I am trying where I can to take things steady.

Sending positive vibes your way- I’m confident we can both get through this 😊

SpiceGirl93 · 23/04/2021 06:37

Hi @bbb2019 sorry to hear you've been going through this! But 18 weeks that's amazing! My midwife told me the bigger the baby the less likely your chances of miscarrying due to heavy blood loss.
So I have had two big bleeds since Sunday but the second one didn't last very long and since then I've just had heavy spotting which seems to have really calmed down today so fingers crossed.
Did you continuously bleed from 10 weeks until now? Did you ever experience any pain? X

Hey, I had SCH in my first pregnancy, red bleeding and was very scary...I was advised to rest and relax but now-ex didn't let me, so I was still up and about and very stressed dealing with him. All ended up absolutely fine. Good luck xx

Muststopeating · 23/04/2021 08:57

I have a sub amniotic hematoma which is a bit different as its in the sac with the baby. Its also stupidly rare. However, I believe the treatment plan is similar.

Mine was found at 20 week scan (I've never had so much as a spot of blood). I am now on 4 weekly growth scans with doppler (to check blood flow between baby and placenta) and seeing the consultant at my 28 week scan (should have been my 24 week scan but there was a muddle up with the booking).

I think if you still have it at your 20 week scan they will keep a closer eye but before then they don't because they can't do proper growth scans much before 24 weeks anyway.

However, I also understand that most early ones are absorbed much before that point so it is very likely you'll carry on with a midwife led pregnancy.

As long as baby is growing they do not take any action. Obviously, if babys growth looks to slow down then they may intervene.

I am 28 weeks tomorrow and next scan is next week, but I am very lucky that I have a wiggly squirmy baby so get constant reassurance.

The wait between scans is horrible (especially the first one). The hospital here have been amazing and said I can be checked as often as I need to be for my own peace of mind, which I've managed not to take them up on so far. FYI baby was measuring exactly 50th centile at 24 weeks.
