Prescription omeperizole (can't spell it sorry!) from the doctors! Take it every day regardless of how you feel. I can't eat past 6pm and if it's really bad I have to sleep sitting up! Sorry you are suffering too!

Chelyanne · 07/04/2021 20:31

Once it's down to baby getting big you only get temporary relief.

Milk or tablets like Rennie help

Ohpulltheotherone · 07/04/2021 20:32

Gaviscon did nothing for me.
I used to take Nexium - it’s one a day and does give good relief.
If it is really really bad you can ask for your GP to prescribe something - I never got that far as it was manageable but I would have insisted if it got much worse to be honest.

candlemasbells · 07/04/2021 20:36

A wedge pillow, I ended up sleeping sat up by the end. Some say leave an hour or so before bed but I found grazing on crackers and cheese helped in the evening.

candlemasbells · 07/04/2021 20:37

Don’t eat for an hour or so before bed, it should say

KHR1 · 07/04/2021 21:01

Morrisons have some antacids that are amazing! They kick in straight away and I found them a lot easier to take than gaviscon.

BurningBenches · 07/04/2021 21:20

Omeprazole.

I have had in all my pregnancies from the first trimester until birth. DC3 it made me throw up daily until she was born..MW jusy suggested rennie/gavisgon etc which didn't work.

With DC4 I read on here about speaking to GP, he prescribed omeprazole and it was a game changer. Having DC5 and on omeprazole again as the acid just makes me vomit.

Janeypopz · 07/04/2021 21:25

Peppermint Peptac which you can get over the counter in pharmacies helps, or just crunching on rennies!

Olive1701 · 07/04/2021 21:57

Omeprazole prescribed from GP. I take 40mg daily
Rennies when it gets bad or when I feel I’ve had a biggish meal.
Ginger tea (pure ginger) soothes it for me and I drink it even when I don’t have symptoms. Avoid dairy-some people say drink cows milk but that only worsens things for me. I only have almond milk now.
Unfortunately a really really plain bland diet. Google GERD diet. It’s really boring but I take that over the horrific heartburn I get. Sometimes I forget myself and over indulge in nice food and I soon regret it so even when you’re feeling good try think is some food worth it because the heartburn will creep up on you :(
I sleep pretty much upright every night.
I am 40+2 today and suffered really bad. I suffered before pregnancy but now it is next level. Hoping when the baby arrives it’s a lot better! Desperate for an Indian takeaway again!!

Mrsmch123 · 08/04/2021 10:00

Nexium done me wonders. Don't need it everyday but take it when I need it.

PlanBea · 08/04/2021 12:11

Another saying get a prescription for omeprazole - I couldn't sleep from sickness/acid reflux, whenever I vaguely came to a lying down position I was sick. It was awful! Rennie's are also allowed in pregnancy, which I now have as a backup as you can use both together (there should be a 2 hour gap between them though, don't take them at the same time) but they kept me going till I could see a GP.

Lovethatjourneyforme · 08/04/2021 13:03

I've just been prescribed omeprazole, can't vouch for it yet but everyone seems to say it's worked for them. Aside from that though, I'd definitely say go for the preventative methods; I've moved my dinner time forward, if I eat later than 7.30 I really suffer, avoid anything that sets it off (dairy and spicy things for me), and sit up in the evening. Even when I'm knackered and so tempted to lie on the sofa in the evening, it's not worth it.

LittleTiger007 · 08/04/2021 13:25

I swig gaviscon out of the bottle after food and eat smaller portions, sometimes I take rennies too. I think it’s just part of the ‘joy’ of pregnancy. I’ve been doing it since I was at about 18 weeks and now at 34 weeks it’s very troublesome at times. Sometimes I feel like I will actually be sick. Small meals and don’t eat before bed. Good luck op. lucymagoo · 08/04/2021 13:41

Another vote for omeprazole! I've been prescribed it for years due to GERD and have taken it on and off. Since being pregnant I've taken it every day and am currently 34 weeks without a hint of heartburn, as someone prone to it pre-pregnancy I'd say this is pretty amazing.

PerspicaciousGreen · 08/04/2021 14:43
  1. Prescription ranitidine from GP.
  2. Swigging Gaviscon double action out of the bottle.
  3. Experiment with the "lifestyle changes" stuff. I might do sod all as the problem is actually the baby pushing upwards, but you might find something that helps. I found I couldn't manage citrus but nothing else made a difference.
  4. Fizzy drinks. A good burp always helped the heartburn!
  5. I got much worse heartburn on an empty stomach. Having food in there have the acid something to do. So I was constantly grazing to never have an empty stomach.
LittleTiger007 · 09/04/2021 10:01

@PerspicaciousGreen really good point about the burping! I have drunk dry ginger since about week 6 due to the nausea then and the heartburn now. The ginger helps and so does the burping that follows!

TheFoz · 09/04/2021 10:05

Omeprazole prescription is the only thing that will work. You need 40mg, and take them every day. They are a life saver.

Ava50x · 09/04/2021 10:05

Please, please get yourself Omeprazole from GP asap!
I suffer from horrendous heartburn in pregnancy, the Omeprazole gets rid of it completely!
It works differently to Rennie/Gaviscon/Tums etc- they work by neutralizing the acid in your stomach, which causes the burning sensation (none of these make the slightest difference to me!). Omep works by blocking the acid so its much, much more effective. I take 1 a day in 2nd trimester and 2 a day in 3rd, Usually as soon as baby is born it stops but it can take a couple of weeks.

lamptastic · 09/04/2021 13:21

Omeprazole
Gaviscon
Rennies
Don't eat laying down, lay down after an hour of eating
Smaller meals
Spicy or acidic foods like onions/tomatoes/citrus may make it worse.

The joys eh? 😆

jazzibelle · 09/04/2021 13:31

Omeprazole reduces the acid, but for me I found the partially digested food still came up (it treats the acid, but not the cause of the acid).

I stopped taking it as I was waking up more frequently and choking on my own vomit in my sleep. Heartburn became the least of the evils in this situation, and I am suffering with it badly!

I've found the following has really helped:

  • Sleeping slightly elevated on a few pillow so I'm tilted
  • Lots of Rennie and Gaviscon liquid for immediate relief
  • Don't eat sweets (sweet stuff makes the acid worse)
  • Eat smaller meals
  • Don't lay down less than 4 hours after having last eaten

So glad I’ve found this thread! At 23 weeks my heartburn is awful, gaviscon, rennies non work so will ask my doctor for a prescription it makes me feel so 🤢xXx

Dublindolly · 09/04/2021 21:32

Totally odd but love heart sweets and refresher sweets work a treat. A couple really eases off the burn. Nice treat to help ease without meds

optimistic40 · 09/04/2021 22:06

Mine was bad too! With first child it disappeared entirely after the birth, but with second child it was still there and now occurs post ovulation for a couple of nights every fucking month!!

Worked for me:

No chocolate
No food close to bedtime
Drinking milk (I hate drinking milk, but it worked and I started having it delivered!)
Gaviscon - not tablets but the gross fluid one. Carried it about with me Grin
Extra pillow to prop me up (mine was mainly in bed)

Santatizer · 10/04/2021 07:01

Another vote for omeprazole - I was going through so much Gaviscon and it was only semi and temporarily effective. Raised pillows didn't help - I had to sit up completely for any kind of relief and even then it was still really unpleasant. Even on omeprazole, I still get the occasional bad bout but, on the whole, it has been a complete game-changer and I got relief the same day I started taking it. Brilliant stuff.

MaMaD1990 · 10/04/2021 07:33

I was going through gaviscon like they were going out of fashion. The GP ended up prescribing me something (I forget what it's called) which helped loads. The heartburn was killer, you have my sympathies!
