How many newborn babygrows?

NewMumAdviceNeeded · 04/04/2021 06:40

I've researched and found people suggest I need 8 newborn babygrows per day. If I'm likely to use 8 a day, would you suggest I buy 16 because some will be in the wash or drying, while I have 8 clean and ready-for-use ones? All help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Blimey, I don't think I ever went through 8 in a day! The most was 3 and that was when she was having explosive poos 💩 16 is plenty when you factor in stains and what not and means if you aren't on top of the laundry as much you've got a few to tide you over

DaisyChainsForever · 04/04/2021 07:02

i also never went through 8 in a day. 2-3 was average. i had about 20 (was given a load of 2nd hand ones from a friend) and washed babies clothes twice a week.

THATbasicSNOWFLAKE · 04/04/2021 07:04

I wouldnt buy more than 9/10 in newborn incase they don't fit!

SunnySideUp2020 · 04/04/2021 07:06

I have about 8 and will buy more if i need when she is born and i know what size/shape she needs!
I think it also depends how often you do laundry...

Aimee1987 · 04/04/2021 07:20

I had about 10 newborn but my son only wore them for 2 days as he was a big baba.

I had about 20ish 0-3 months. Like others have said mabey 2-3 changes a day depending on how much baby spits up ect.
Also I bought stuff then loads of people gave me stuff once baba was born so dont go overboard.

ivfbeenbusy · 04/04/2021 07:28

8 a day?!

Nope - if they spit up a bit etc just wipe them down and carry on! 🤣 if I changed my twins 8 times a day each my washing machine would never forgive me and don't start me on the ironing it's bad enough as it is!

I'd say at most I've changed once mid morning if they have a bad accident 💩 and then I generally change them for bedtime to sort of signal to them it's time for sleep 🤞🤞

User0ne · 04/04/2021 07:29

Bloody hell! 8 a day?Grin

I've just had DS3 and bought 5 before the birth (and 5 body suits). Now I know what size he is I've topped up to 10.

If you're very fussy about clean clothes or incredibly unlucky with a really pukey/pooy baby I suppose you might change them 7 times a day. I'm sure you can find better things to do with yourself though.

It's difficult with dc1 because you get told you need loads of stuff (you don't). There's very little you can't get on next day delivery if you did decide you needed it. Save your money for now

CeeceeBloomingdale · 04/04/2021 07:31

My refluxy baby only went through about 3 or 4 in a 24 hour period. I'd have about 12 to allow for washing but mine both went into tiny baby for a while even though they weren't that small, then newborn, then 0-3m. They can always wear a slightly too big one at night if you're caught short.

Muststopeating · 04/04/2021 08:59

It really depends how particular you're going to be about every tiny little bit of spit up. I wasn't (although my first was rarely sick). Like a pp said, just a little bit and you wipe them up. If they are wet enough to be a bit uncomfortable then you change them. Neither of mine have needed newborn gros at all though, all gone straight into 0-3 months. (One was 7lb 4oz, the other 8lb 14oz). With my first I think they were a bit big on but they grow into them in days!

Best advice is buy light. Otherwise when it comes to packing up the baby stuff you will just mourn the money spent on things never worn/worn once (even if that money was friends/familys). I did not buy much at all and yet had masses of stuff (and I don't have an especially big family) Exception is vests. Noone ever buys you vests!

8 a day?! Noooo. We used 1-3 most days but they’re so tiny they dry in no time at all if they do need a wash.

TheMotherlode · 04/04/2021 09:03

I found about 15 babygrows were plenty, but only a few in newborn size and the rest in 0-3. Doesn’t matter if they’re a little big to start.

MyNameForToday1980 · 04/04/2021 09:05

DD was not a particularly sicky baby, and rarely did explosive poos. She wore 2 per 24 hour period. If she was having a sicky phase, we might be got through 3, maybe 4. But 2 was the norm.

Parker231 · 04/04/2021 09:07

Mine wore babygros until they were about nine months old but I don’t think I had more than eight of any one size. They dry quickly and are fine in the tumble dryer over the wet months.

Chelyanne · 04/04/2021 09:09

A few a day maybe. We had a sickly 1st baby and she still only went through a few a day, used muslins or bibs for feeds.
14 of each size is ample so you're not needing to was too often.
I go for more up to 1 month and 0-3 than newborn. Our eldest fit in newborn but our older 4 all had up to 1mth as a bit big for the newborn.

Boringnamechanging · 04/04/2021 09:14

0 neither of my babies fit in newborn. (They weren't huge either 8lb but long)

I never went through 8 a day either. Maybe 3/4 in 24 hours as they wore babygrows day and night for the first few weeks. You can always buy more if needed. Plus if you have some of the next size up you can always use them if you've run out.

LadyBillyBon · 04/04/2021 09:39

8 in a day. God 😂 I've never used more than 3 in a day I don't think.

But also be prepared that 'newborn' in some places only goes up to 7lbs. So you need to check the weights rather than the size.

My 9lb baby didn't fit in newborn at all so they were wasted. Bought mostly 'up to 1 month' and 0-3 this time.

Hardbackwriter · 04/04/2021 09:43

Are you sure you haven't got nappies and baby grows mixed up...? I can't imagine how you could go through 8 a day unless you were using them instead of nappies!

Sorry to jump on but how essential are integrated scratch mitts in newborn baby grows? I've been looking online and most of the usual shops (next, M&S, JL etc) don't even have them any more. I've seen them sold separately but they look like they will fall off straight away!

Not at all in my experience, both mine hated them and wanted to suck their hands for comfort.

I never used them. They might be useful if you have a newborn in the dead of winter and want to keep their hands warmer, I guess - I've only had spring and summer babies - but I never found any need for them as scratch mitts.

It's a lot better for their senses developing to not have them on tbh
Moominmiss · 04/04/2021 10:33

As others have said 2-3 per day perhaps, but 8 a day I feel would be way more than you’d need. 8 nappy changes a day however, yes.

Luckyelephant1 · 04/04/2021 10:36

Oh right thanks! Baby due in July so I won't bother with them too much then. Finding it really hard to plan clothing for a summer newborn tbh (I'm due in July), especially since the British summer is always so unpredictable! At least with winter babies you know the weather will definitely be cold whereas July could either be a scorcher or end up being cold and wet after an earlier heatwave. I want to be prepared for everything but at the same time not wasting money on clothes that will never be worn!

Luckyelephant1 · 04/04/2021 10:36

Don't know why I mentioned being due in July twice lol Hmm

Hard2Find09 · 04/04/2021 10:37

0 - my baby went straight into size 0-3 (and wasn’t in those long either). I wouldn’t worry about buying many or any newborn size. People will most likely gift some to you and they won’t actually fit for very long.

That being said we have never gone through that many outfit changes in a day! At most 3 or 4 when she was sick.
