Covid vaccine in pregnancy - did your GP have to sign it off/prescribe it?

Have been invited for my vaccine, I'm 32 weeks pregnant and after lots of research I have decided to take it due to various risks. My midwife is supportive of my decision but doesn't know much about it, my GP doesn't really care and says the vaccine doesn't have anything to do with them.

If I turn up to my appointment will they actually give it to me or will I need to have "permission" to have it? Does anyone have any experience of getting the vaccine in pregnancy please.

If you've been offered it, you can have it. It's your choice.

victopai · 26/03/2021 14:13

I am pregnant and had second jab today. They asked if I were pregnant with I confirmed. Then the software prompted a consultant to come and talk to me. They confirmed I understood that I am agreeing to jab and spoke to me about risks and studies. It is ultimately your decision.

HowCanYou · 26/03/2021 14:18

That's great, thank you.

I went for mine 2 weeks ago. When I said I was pregnant they refused to see me & sent me away. I called my gp who said they would do it but only if I got a letter from the baby consultant.

HowCanYou · 26/03/2021 15:45

Ah ok that was what I was worried about as my consultant is only available Monday mornings and it's really hard to speak to her. Did you get yours sorted in the end?

@lilymty I’m sorry that happened for you.

OP the green book (the instruction guidelines for vaccinators) were updated in February as you should be able to accept the vaccine on patient choice alone, provided you tell them you have read re: the lack of data (Ie risks). I’ve had mine. Had to explain I was a HCP continuing to work. Similarly, friends said they were ECV and had made their choice. None of us needed letters!

Hope the appointment goes ok x

www.rcog.org.uk/en/guidelines-research-services/coronavirus-covid-19-pregnancy-and-womens-health/covid-19-vaccines-and-pregnancy/covid-19-vaccines-pregnancy-and-breastfeeding/

Read this and have ready on phone /print to show them . Advise them you have spoken to midwife and gp etc. That you are aware of the benefit versus risk and that in your circumstances you have reached decision you wish to have vaccine under which ever group covers your issue.

Floopyandtired · 26/03/2021 18:46

I had mine 2 days ago and I didn’t need anything from any health professional confirming I could have the vaccine. They were surprised to see a pregnant woman there but were happy to vaccinate me. Good luck

HowCanYou · 26/03/2021 19:07

Thanks for all your answers. That link is really handy, I have saved it for my appointment as it mentions gestational diabetes which I also have.

I never got it sorted as I'm now 36 weeks & have to have injections after birth which means I couldn't have my second dose if I had it now so I'm waiting till after baby is born now. I did have that link, the government website & the jvc guidelines saved to my phone which I showed the nurse & the doctor at the centre who this refused me. I told them I had talked it through with my consultant & it was actually him who advised me to have it.

I hope you have better look than me. 🤞

HowCanYou · 29/03/2021 11:40

Just as an update incase any one is googling the same as I was and comes across this thread.

The vaccine centre won't vaccinate pregnant women so they suggest I get it through my GP if they said I can have it. My GP says the vaccine is nothing to do with them and they aren't doing it. So all in all a bit of a failure for me!

How frustrating for you. I was hoping you would have better look than me. Do you for long left to go?

HowCanYou · 29/03/2021 13:10

I'm 33 weeks today, hopefully be induced around 39 due to the gestational diabetes, but it means staying in hospital etc which I'm nervous about in a pandemic.

I've had a good cry about it, terrified I will catch covid and die before baby is here, just want him out so I can have the vaccine asap now.

It's so weird how some places will do it but not others despite the guidelines being it is the mothers choice.

OP posts:
lilymty · 29/03/2021 15:00

I feel just the same. I'm 36+3 & wanted to be covered as its likely I will be induced also which raises my chances of needing a section which is already 50/50 so I'm going to end up with a stay in hospital. I'm having 6 weeks of injections after birth so won't be able to have the vaccine until I have stopped them so that's even more time not coveted.
I feel like they shouldn't say its the mothers choice then refuse her.

HowCanYou · 29/03/2021 15:49

I feel exactly the same. DH has a friend who works in a vaccine centre who has said each centre has it's own rules.

Aah that must be really hard. I hope everything goes well for you and you can have the vaccine asap!

Just an update. I decided to give another centre a call his afternoon & after a chat with the man who is in charge of the centre he's happy to give me the vaccine on weds.
He has given me his name to tell them to get him if there is a problem but he's leaving a note with them that I will be coming in. If there is other centres local to you if might be worth giving them a call to see if any with do. Just hoping it all goes swimmingly on weds

Girlmama3 · 29/03/2021 19:34

What vaccines did those of you who’ve had it have?

I’m having it. Only 7 weeks at the moment but I’ll sit in my gps until I get it if I have to!

HowCanYou · 29/03/2021 20:38

Oh wow @lilymty, that's great. I hope you manage to get it! I need to try and rebook at a different centre tomorrow, but couldn't see any numbers for the centres to call on the booking website. The one I was booked at was in a shopping centre, and the woman called me off a mobile number today.

Thanks @Loti92. My gp didn't know what I was talking about when I mentioned it being prescribed! The centre DH friend volunteers at will vaccinate pregnant women, but they have run out of vaccines for 3 weeks apparently. Was handy for you to see a doctor! Glad you managed to get it.

Hope you have better luck then me girlmama

@Girlmama3 I had the pfizer. I had the first vaccine before I was pregnant. They are happy for me to have the second one next week (I'm very early so was worried they would say no but they are fine with it). Good luck, they say it is our choice so don't take no for an answer x

lilymty · 31/03/2021 10:37

@HowCanYou. Just an update, I had no problems having the jab today. I wasn't even asked about pregnancy. I would definitely try some other centres I found the phone number on Facebook.

Honeydukesmum · 31/03/2021 10:55

@lilymty did you tell them anyway re pregnancy? As I think they need the info to report to mhra etc so they can follow uptake /effects etc

HowCanYou · 31/03/2021 10:57

That's great lilmty. I have booked a different centre for this evening that I have been told vaccinates pregnant women so will update tonight 🤞

OP posts:
lilymty · 31/03/2021 11:04

They already had all my details that I was going in & have it all on file. I spoke with the person in charge on Monday who attached the information for the person doing it so they have all my details.

HowCanYou · 31/03/2021 18:21

I couldn't get mine as apparently no vaccine centres are licensed to give vaccines to pregnant women, which my doctor and midwife should have known and arranged to have through them/the hospital. They are calling my doctor on my behalf apparently but I'm not holding my breath that I will be getting it before the baby comes.
