Is Morning sickness gender related?

Hi guys,

So I'm pregnant with my second. My first was a girl and I had horrible morning sickness.

This time - and I don't want to speak too soon - I'm really tired but generally the nausea is manageable - whereas last time I couldn't even walk into the kitchen for the smell.

I know the old wives tale is that you're more sick with a girl than a boy. Has anyone had a girl and a boy and noticed a difference? Or had two girls and had different experiences?

Would love to know out of interest! Xx

I don’t buy it. I had two boys and had much worse morning sickness the second time round. Also the heartburn meaning a good head of hair thing also seems to be bullshit - had a little heartburn with DS1 and he had an impressive head of thick dark hair. Heartburn from hell with DS2 and he was bald as a coot!

Italiandreams · 15/03/2021 17:12

Girl first, boy second. Much sicker second time round. Don’t know if I was more tired or just body reacting differently. So complete opposite for me anyway.

Chelyanne · 15/03/2021 17:12

I doubt it, I think it just differes with each pregnancy.

I had mild nausea with all my singletons, 2 girls and 1 boy. Bad with twin girls but worst with current singleton girl (so bad I though it must be twins again).

Bluntness100 · 15/03/2021 17:13

No, I had a girl and no morning sickness. Look at Kate Middleton, sick as a dog each time,

Soontobe60 · 15/03/2021 17:14

I think you mean sex. gender is a societal expectation, not a biological condition.
I had morning sickness with one DD and not with the other. My sister has 5 boys, MS with 2, not with other 3.

3babylady · 15/03/2021 17:15

Not for me 2 boys 1 girl, morning sickness was the worst with 1st & 3rd pregnancies equally one was boy one was girl so for me sickness is just pregnancy related.

Aozora13 · 15/03/2021 17:20

I’ve got 2 girls and had morning sickness with both but it was quite different. DC1 I had constant nausea but rarely vomited, DC2 I was sick daily but much less nausea. Now pregnant with DC3 and back to constant nausea but no vomiting. The only difference is that I can’t stop eating and can’t stomach anything sweet so have decided it’s a boy!

I read somewhere that if you have HG you’re slightly more likely to have a girl but otherwise it’s just an old wives tale.

Luckingfovely · 15/03/2021 17:22

It clearly varies too much to be able to gain a definite answer. But for me:

Girl: vomited every day for five months
Boy: felt a bit rough now and again

WalkingMeAway · 15/03/2021 17:24

I’m afraid not. My morning sickness has been increasingly worse with each pregnancy. Girl - Boy - Boy

SnooperTrooper12345 · 15/03/2021 17:38

Just a complete myth.
I've had a boy and a girl and currently pregnant with a 2md girl and had more sickness with my boy

Shezlon · 15/03/2021 17:41

Nope. I've had two girls and a boy and only felt awful during one of the girl pregnancies. I had sickness until 32 weeks in that pregnancy and then didn't have any sickness in either of the other two ones.

pumpkinpie01 · 15/03/2021 19:39

My morning sickness was so much worse with my dd , with my ds's it was very manageable. There was a very clear difference. My dd's heartbeat was faster than her 3 brothers too

MeadowHay · 15/03/2021 19:42

I'm pretty sure there's no science to back up these myths. I had HG first time - girl. I have it again this time, we won't find out the sex til birth. My DM didn't have HG but her worst nausea was with a boy compared to her two girl pregnancies.

Jelly4444 · 15/03/2021 19:51

I believe there is some truth to it. The levels of HCG, which lead to nausea, are usually higher in girls. I was definitely sicker on my daughter.

Montsti · 15/03/2021 19:54

I’ve had 1 boy and 3 girls. Very mild nausea for the first 12 weeks with ds...much worse for at least 16-18 weeks with each of my girls. Worst with baby no.3 (dd2)...

MrsPatrickDempsey · 15/03/2021 19:57

I have one of each and sickness was equally bad with both

EvilOnion · 15/03/2021 20:00

Sex not gender - sorry to be arsey, I really don't mean to be but the language around this is important. Sex is biological, gender is a societal construct.

In answer to your question though, I've had 2 pregnancies resulting in one of each
and was sick during both but girl was definitely worse as I was hospitalised at one point and puked my way to the delivery room 🤢

With the boy I was sick all the way but not as severe.

ChipsAreLife · 15/03/2021 20:01

Not for me. I've got two girls and a boy. Boy was by far the worse pregnancy. Was really sick and exhausted. Girl pregnancies were pretty easy in comparison

FolkSongSweet · 15/03/2021 20:03

It’s not a myth and there is science behind it, but it’s not as straightforward as sickness = girl.

The higher your levels of hcg, the more likely it is that you will suffer morning sickness. Female pregnancies have higher levels of hcg on average than male ones. So you are more likely to have morning sickness with a girl than a boy. But the level at which hcg will
produce symptoms differs for every woman, and it’s entirely possible that you could have higher hcg in a male pregnancy than a female one.

Your hcg levels are tested as part of the combined screening at 12 weeks. I had very low levels and no sickness with my son and average levels and bad sickness with my daughter so fit the pattern.

Bringonspring · 15/03/2021 20:04

I was definitely sicker with my DD than my DS. Have you ruled out twins?

Redwinestillfine · 15/03/2021 20:08

I felt sick with both my DD and DS but with DS it was much worse

No, first time I was fine apart from just feeling off. Second time signed off work for five weeks with extreme vomiting.
Both girls.

BikeRunSki · 15/03/2021 20:40

I have a boy and a girl. I was hospitalised with hyperemisis on and off for 8 weeks in both pregnancies, during the save weeks. My experience of 2 babies, does not suggest it’s related to the sex of the baby.

Doona · 15/03/2021 20:43

Felt really sick for all of them but come to think of it I probably did vomit more with my daughter.
