So... Ive had - Muffled voice- Diarrhea for the best part of a week. Seen doctors who say nothing they can do it will pass.

I really don't believe it will pass. I'm now just eating chicken and rice, a little toast and drinking water. Nothings getting better and I'm starting to feel a little suicidal.

Has anyone else had this in pregnancy?

OP obviously I don’t know how bad the diarrhoea is but to say it’s driving you to feeling suicidal is not normal.

Can you contact your midwife unit and explain how you are feeling? Have you tried anti-diarrhoea tablets? I assume you have but again I’m very concerned with making comment like that and if that’s how bad you feel you must get in contact with someone.

Wishing you well.

Dottybirds · 14/03/2021 19:32

Please get back in contact with someone, I’m sure there’s something they can give you. You’ve had it for a week now, it’s unacceptable really for them to fob you off

Had it for the first 14 weeks and now back with force at 25 weeks. Been like this for two weeks. Feel dreadful.
zzzebra · 14/03/2021 20:21

Was going to post something similar today.

8 weeks pregnant and for the last week everything I've eaten has gone straight through me. About 3-6 bouts a day, mixed with the sickness it's horrific and I can barely get out of bed cos my body is just giving up.

Called the doctor last Thursday after 5 days of it, and was told to get a Covid test then call back in a week if I still wasn't well. I don't think I'll last another week, worried I'm going to get seriously dehydrated.

This is my second pregnancy and I didn't have anything like this in my first. Plus the internet suggests it's not a pregnancy symptom. So who knows, but it's not normal and no one else in the house is ill so I don't think it's a bug.

Sitchervice · 14/03/2021 20:31

@Analysethat I've been I. Hospital twice in the last week talk to the delivery suite as that's where I kept getting sent. They said that I can't take any diarrhea tablets at all, Non, zilch nothing. Apparently they are harmful to the baby. Otherwise I'd have taken an imodium by now 😭

Even when I said I wanted to die they were just like well I'm sorry but you'll have to see your GP and said it was just IBS. I don't have IBS. I've eaten nothing but chicken rice and toast (Bread which I've had ALL PREGNANCY) for the last week.

@zzzebra I had to take a covid test to but Diarrhea isn't even a symptom to look out for! Mine was negative. Every test they took was negative.

Greenmarmalade · 14/03/2021 20:39

Try cutting out the bread, all gluten and dairy?

Sounds awful for you.

If you really feel suicidal please do call your midwife and state this clearly.

Mine was negative too, the doctor said next steps would be to test for a urine infection. So I might call again tomorrow.

They did prescribe me something for the sickness, so at least now it's just the diaharia.

It's so hard to not let it bring you down

Embracelife · 14/03/2021 20:44

Chicken rice and toast is fine.will keep you and baby going.
Ask about any supplements you can take
But tell gp about your thoughts and get help for your mental health

MustStopSnacking28 · 14/03/2021 20:47

Hi, it does sound like you must be suffering if you feel suicidal after a week of diarrhoea. Personally I would just carry on doing as the doctors have said (but I have Crohn’s disease so would just see a week of the runs as normal to be fair). It would be more of a concern if you are becoming dehydrated, in which case I would hope you would be given intravenous fluids. Have they checked for that?

Whatdoesitsayaboutyou · 14/03/2021 20:48

As previous posters have said you should seek mh support if you're feeling suicidal.
Sometimes during /after pregnancy women become coeliac, it may be worth cutting out all gluten (wheat, barley, rye and oats). You'd need to do it for a minimum of two weeks. Dairy may also be a good one to cut out if not (but not at the same time). Also things like ibs can suddenly start due to stress on your body could you ask the GP if any antispasmodic drugs and peppermint oil could be prescribed?

SecretDoor · 14/03/2021 20:59

Are you on any new iron tablets?

Sitchervice · 14/03/2021 20:59

@Whatdoesitsayaboutyou I know I'm lactose intollorent so no dairy anyway. I could try cutting out the bread. The idea that I might end up having to have an even stranger more difficult diet to manage is just making me feel worse about all this.

They didn't seem bothered by my expression that I wanted to die. They just shrugged it off like it was nothing.

Doctors just said I couldn't take anything at all because of the pregnancy and wished me luck after saying talk to your GP.

Sitchervice · 14/03/2021 21:01

@SecretDoor nope. Just normal pregnancy vitamins. I was given and took dihydrocodeine for back pain. Then woke up the next day vometed then the diarrhea started. I haven't taken that tablet since.

@7MustStopSnacking28 I'm sorry I must sound like a right weakling 😭

I did get very very dehydrated. Ended up on 2 drips last Wednesday.

Not at all - if anything apologies if I seem a bit blasé as that wasn’t my intention and I hope I didn’t come across as dismissive! From personal experience though I wouldn’t worry about the diarrhoea itself (although I know it is so draining so that’s easy to say, and if I was in a flare up currently I might say different!!) but the dehydration is more of a concern. At least if they have given you IV fluids that is under control a bit more. Try to stick to very bland foods if you can that are easy to digest eg. Clear soups if you’re up to it. Can you manage lucozade? That has really helped me a lot during flare ups too, I credit it with making me feel normal again on occasion. I was lucky during pregnancy and didn’t have a flare (pregnant now and fingers crossed it will be the same!!) so I really do sympathise. If your mental health is very low I would prioritise that over the diarrhoea and get yourself seen by the specialist midwives Flowers

WeavingWandering · 14/03/2021 22:43

-BRAT diet

  • lots of water & rehydration salts- if you can source the ones they use for dysentery and the like, they have some bulking stuff that adds calories (I’m a parasite magnet unfortunately so can definitely say the boots oral rehydration salts are not the same thing!)
ButternutFairy · 15/03/2021 07:35

So sorry you are feeling like this. Maybe try bananas, grapes, that sort of thing? They are known to have the opposite effect, might slow things down for you.

PinkPlantCase · 15/03/2021 07:50

Are you getting help for your mental health? Surely this is a separate issue to the Diarrhea.

Feeling suicidal after a week of the shits is not a normal reaction.

Sitchervice · 15/03/2021 07:50

@WeavingWandering
@ButternutFairy

BRAT diet is one I've heard of before. I've been doing the rice toast part. Not a fan of Bannanas and Apple sauce. But at this rate I'll pinch my nose shut my eyes and eat it if I need to do all of it.

OP posts:
Sitchervice · 15/03/2021 07:55

@PinkPlantCase I've never had help for my mental health. I've taken tablets before and seen a private Councillor but NHS have always, always brushed me aside.

My community midwife even put that I had no depression or anxiety on the form in my booking appointment when I was taking my tablets for anxiety. I had to come off of those in the end as they weren't good for baby and didn't mix well with the Aspirin I have to take for pregnancy.

They even did yesterday when I went back in due to the diarrhea and I told them how I felt.

OP posts:
zzzebra · 17/03/2021 13:43

How are you getting on?

I'm still suffering, it's almost been two weeks now. Since starting on anti sickness meds last Friday I've only been sick 1-2 times a day but still every time I eat it goes straight through me within 30 minutes.

I managed to see a doctor yesterday, she said I couldn't take anything to stop it but I could take Dirolyte to help replenish me. She checked I wasn't too dehydrated, didn't have a urine infection, gave me a general once over then sympathetically told me that I'm just going to have to power through it.

Jchina · 18/03/2021 18:01

I would go back and ask again what can be done and whether you need some tests to check whether you have an infection or something else underlying. Usually with immodium while there is no evidence it is safe there is no evidence it is harmful either so becomes a balance of risks when you are becoming so unwell. In my first pregnancy I had a flare up of my Crohn’s disease and was allowed to take immodium along with other Crohn’s medication but still ended up so poorly I was in hospital on a fluid and steroid drip to try to control it. Baby was and is absolutely fine (amazingly) even though I was stick thin underneath the pregnancy. Rehydration salts may help you feel better along with drinking squash rather than water which can help it not to run straight through. I feel for you OP, it’s absolutely miserable to live with so don’t be fobbed off.

Sitchervice · 18/03/2021 18:55

@Jchina I might talk to the midwife about it. I'm still not 100%
I did have bloods ect taken and they found nothing no evidence of an infection and just said I was fine.

I've given up just eating rice and chicken etc because I need somthing for my baby :/

Mylittlesandwich · 18/03/2021 18:58

My pregnancy multivitamin gave me horrible diarrhoea. I stopped taking them all together. I had folic acid and vitamin d that I took separately and was fine. Could you drop them for a day or 2 to see if that's the issue?
