When do you start buying for baby

Hi folks

FTM to a very wanted baby. 21 weeks tomorrow and not sure when is too early to start buying.

I was very premature myself so would like some bits bought but also realise we haven’t reached the magic viability point. Argh!

Thoughts and suggestions please!

My first baby I went straight into town after finding out she was a girl at 19 weeks lol. Im 13 weeks atm and im thinking of starting buying bits around 24 weeks.
Depends how you feel yourself really, I personally dont feel 21 weeks is too early ❤️

Wondermule · 12/03/2021 12:52

I started buying small bits and bobs (clothes, muslins etc) after the 20 week scan, but held off buying the bigger bits (cot, pram) until about 30 weeks.

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 12/03/2021 12:53

It's really up to you, I started around 30 weeks, because as you say, viability and all that. I'm very pragmatic and figured if my baby was born at 28 weeks they'd have been in hospital for some time, wouldn't have much use for clothes/carseats etc so would have time to buy them

SylviaPlath1984 · 12/03/2021 12:54

Think I was still waiting for the line to appear when I went off to mother care lol. That was the first time round, I was excited and jumped in right away. This time I'm 19 weeks and think I have about 1/4 of what I need? I'm in no hurry. Do whatever makes you happy and sparks joy, and congratulations!

THATbasicSNOWFLAKE · 12/03/2021 12:55

Im 24 weeks this weekend and so far have bought two packs of bottles and that is all!

However this is dc #6 so we don't need that much! I know with my first i was buying clothes before the 20 week scan

Rutennotou · 12/03/2021 12:55

I waited until after the 20 week scan. Then I went nuts 😂

Chelyanne · 12/03/2021 13:01

I started buying after my dating scan.
We already have lots from our other children so just need some bigger things that were well worn or we couldn't store and then things you always get new like bottles, nappies etc. Only 17+3wk atm but already building stock of nappies, wipes etc up (will buy sizes 1-3). Spread the cost a bit better doing things a little at a time. Bedroom cot and pram are last on my list of things to get.

Eileen101 · 12/03/2021 13:06

With DC1, we brought the bigger necessities - car seat, pram, Moses basket whenever the Mothercare parent events were for the discount from about 12 weeks onwards. We brought odd little bits here and there from about 20 weeks like nice vests that I couldn't resist whilst we were in Mothercare Grin, multipacks of sleepsuits etc from about 24/25 weeks in the supermarket, cloth nappies around the same time. A sling when baby was about 8 weeks. We were between houses so kept it to the essentials.

Went straight to H&M after having a private 'gender scan' at 16 weeks with DC2 Grin for the obligatory pink things. Other than that, have mostly reused DS's old clothes. Although last summer, I brought some dresses in the frugi sale ready for this summer...

LittleMimi · 12/03/2021 13:10

After the 20 week scan we bought the pram and some other things. I didn’t plan to do that. I’m usually quite a cynic and sceptical but I just started looking and saw some good sales in January.

Waitingforbabypage · 12/03/2021 13:15

With my first, I think it was about 35 weeks before I was "allowed" to buy anything- I had a very controlling husband and mother in law.
And I was very stressed leaving it so late and had to "make do" with certain things because they didn't have the one I would have preferred.
With my second we bought stuff after the 20 week scan because it was a boy so needed to buy some clothes otherwise the poor lad would have been dressed in pink 😂

This time around, we bought neutral big stuff during the sales just before the 20 week scan. But we couldn't pass up on the offers. I'm glad I didn't wait as I got my dream travel system for 60% off and it's back up to full price 😱😂

As a previous poster said- do whatever sparks joy for yourself. There's no right or wrong.

NamechangeTTC · 12/03/2021 13:18

We’ve got the pram, bought just prior to the 20w scan for £400 off. I’m wanting to start ticking bigger stuff off slowly, not so much clothes (can get them last minute) but cot etc! I arrived at 30w so leaving it too late worries me! 😂

It's all personal preference. There is no right or wrong. Personally I don't buy a single thing until 30 weeks at least. But that's because my partner has lost 2 babies previously at 24 weeks.

Luckyelephant1 · 12/03/2021 13:24

I'm 22 weeks and will be buying the first few bits this weekend. Waiting for the shops to open in April so we can see pram and car seats in person as I think it's important to be able to test them out etc. I think if we were in normal circumstances and I could browse etc I would've at least bought clothes and small bits by now, but with nothing open you can't really do that.

I know a few people pregnant and due a couple of weeks before or after me and some have bought pretty much everything and are making me feel as if I'm totally unprepared which is very irritating. I've done shit loads of research, just need to order!

Sceptre86 · 12/03/2021 13:28

With dd I bought some books for her straight away. We didn't actually buy any clothing until I was 6 months pregnant and then just brightly coloured stuff either gender could wear. I bought a travel system after the 20 week scan as there was a mothercare event at the time and I got it for a steal. With ds I waited till after 20 weeks to start buying clothes even though we had a gender scan at 16 weeks. Anything towels, muslin, clothes wise of dd's i reused. I am 15 weeks with my third and have bought the baby a coming home outfit with baby our surname on it and have started knitting a blanket. I won't buy anything till after 20 weeks but that is only because a lot of the bigger purchases I already have and intend to reuse. Do whatever makes you happy. Congratulations, hope the remainder of your pregnancy is happy and healthy x

NamechangeTTC · 12/03/2021 14:00

We’ve done an outdoor pram test and ordered that way as Scotland is opening up a bit slower. Think I’d be more excited by clothes if I could see them!

mummywantstobeslim · 12/03/2021 14:13

I bought a beautiful silk baby blanket as soon as I got a positive result Grin now that I know the gender (20 week scan) I have started to buy specific clothes.

ivfbeenbusy · 12/03/2021 14:19

24 weeks with my twins as from that point hospital would intervene to save them in a premature labour situation. I kept receipts for everything though and ordered through shops with a decent returns policy (I know that sounds morbid but I'd lost several pregnancies previously) x

PlanBea · 12/03/2021 14:54

We bought a side sleeper really early, just after the dating scan as it was a black Friday bargain, and the pram and car seat just after the 20 week scan as it was around Christmas and I guessed we'd end up in another lockdown or at least tier 4. I really needed to push a pram in person as I have a chronic pain condition and so needed to pick the one I could best cope with. Everything else has kind of been in dribs and drabs since then. I was happy to buy things from 20 weeks+ but with shops being shut I haven't bought half of what I thought I would. At this rate if my baby turns up early he'll be spending a lot of time naked 😬 but at lease babygros can be picked up in the supermarket!

NamechangeTTC · 12/03/2021 15:12

I’m a bit similar @ivfbeenbusy because of family history. I think cot/side sleeper/bassinet type thing would be the next priority.

I went shopping as soon as i got 1-2 weeks on clearblue 😂.

Whenever you're ready op.

xoxochellexoxo · 12/03/2021 15:20

Im 23 weeks and nearly everythings bought 🙈🙈 im a FTM and was just too excited to start buying, it didnt even cross my mind that what if something happened, we wanted to spread the cost over time

Confusednovice · 12/03/2021 16:09

I'm 25 weeks and if baby arrived tomorrow we'd be fine (room, cot, pram, carseat, newborn onesies)

It's been the only thing occupying me during lockdown besides work!

zaraa123 · 12/03/2021 16:40

I’m just 8 weeks but plan on stock piling generic things as soon as I have my 12 week scan in order to spread the cost! Things like wipes, nappies & anything that could still be used/donated in the event of the worst. This is purely from a money point of view because adding a pack of wipes & some nappies to a weekly shop will be less noticeable than doing it all in one hit. We’ve started saving for bigger items (pram etc) and will get those much closer to the time!

kerbearr · 12/03/2021 19:53

I'm 21 pregnant aswell, I'm pregnant with twins and have nothing in yet bar a few tiny baby babygrows and vests as there's a good chance they will be small and there hard to find sometimes. starting to panic as I know I I only have a max of 16 weeks left as full term for me is 37 weeks, but It still feels early but need to start getting organised as I've started getting PGP and afraid I won't be mobile by the end

ShutUpAlex · 12/03/2021 21:14

As soon as I’ve had my 12 week scan I’ll be off shopping.
