When do you start buying for baby

Hi folks

FTM to a very wanted baby. 21 weeks tomorrow and not sure when is too early to start buying.

I was very premature myself so would like some bits bought but also realise we haven’t reached the magic viability point. Argh!

Thoughts and suggestions please!

32 weeks and still haven't bought anything! I have some stuff left over from DC1 though.

I'm 18 weeks. After the 12 week scan we picked up a few clothes and a very impractical 1m tall giraffe from h&m...

My mother in law has been buying clothes for quite some time it seems and popped round to drop off a massive bag the other day... I didn't count, but there are probably 60/70 items, all neatly bagged into different age groups. So I don't need to buy any more clothes!!

We've started looking at prams, car seats etc. but want to see them in person before buying, so we're waiting for the shops to open. We've picked some bits of nursery furniture, but again not bought anything.

Was thinking of starting to collect nappies at some point, maybe after 20 weeks.

Oh and we dug out a box of my husband's old soft toys that have been through loads of house moves. They'll need a wash and possibly a trip to the teddy plastic surgeon at some point.

I'm a bit of a planner and buying stuff is about all I can control around this pregnancy so...!

Has anyone found a good and realistic guide to how much of what item they will need per age range? Eg. 10x newborn sleepsuits...etc? I've taken a look but as a FTM it's hard know what's realistic. Also I'm due in mid-July and quite a few UK shopping guides seem to focus on winter born babies.

Chelyanne · 13/03/2021 13:08

@kerbearr twins are not always small so make sure you stock up with larger sizes too just in case.

I carried our twin girls to 38wk and they came out 8lb 5oz & 8lb 11oz. SPD was awful but I managed to keep doing all the household stuff and look after 3 kids as hubby broke his leg when I was 26wk so didn't have a choice.

Chelyanne · 13/03/2021 13:13

@luckyelephant1 14 bodysuits and sleepsuits for each size tend to be enough to get you by without washing too often. Several cardigans and thin blankets. Outfits are nice occasionally but it's comfier for them to live in sleepsuits most if the time.
Babies are not good at regulating their body temperature so layering is best and they need to be more wrapped up than we do even in summer months.

I would buy more upto 1 month than newborn, maybe say 6-9 newborn and 13 up to one month. If you need more in smaller sizes you can generally get some easily. As your due July there should be decent drying weather too

THATbasicSNOWFLAKE · 13/03/2021 13:16

I meant to say 12 upto one month, 13 seems randon. Often get packs of 3

kerbearr · 13/03/2021 13:49

@Chelyanne there good weights for twins that's amazing! I know I'll have a good range of sizes for them by the time there born hopefully it's off no odds if there bigger the tiny baby clothes I can always donate somewhere after covid. I just don't want to buy too early too soon but I know times creeping up now.

Your Wonder Woman too keeping the house going and kids these are my first babies so I'm lucky if I get really bad there's nobody relying me only the 2 I'm cooking right now 😊 but hopefully I only have it mild it seems to come and go I moved house last month and was sore for a while after then last Friday I scrubbed the house top to bottom, went for a walk then went shopping I just think I done too much in the one day as I've been in agony this week but it's easing off again

GreenSlide · 13/03/2021 13:52

I'm 21 weeks and I'll probably start chucking nappies, wipes, vests, sudocrem etc in along with the shopping from next week.

You could change clothes up to maybe 5 times a day in the early days (babies puke and crap constantly), don't buy too many newborn clothes though because they grow out of them quickly and people will buy and give you lots. I'll probably start with 20 short sleeve vests and 20 sleep suits in size 'up to one month' and the same in 0-3 months.

Bought everything over one weekend at 32 weeks.

Chelyanne · 13/03/2021 15:01

@kerbearr You need so much more with twins, we kept it to the bare minimum because of space but still had loads.
I'd had big singletons before so expected them to be on the large side. I was certainly ready for their eviction but didn't want to have to spend time in nicu if I could avoid it, enduring that last stint was worth it to be able to take the girls home less than 36 hours after cesarean (both breech). They got a lot of attention from staff as they were bigger than a lot of the singletons on the ward lol.

SPD does get worse the heavier they get but you can manage it by limiting your range of motion and not pushing too hard. Shortening walking stride, steps bring your feet to meet on each step and lead with the better side getting in out bed/car sit and swing both legs in/out together.
You will have to focus on rebuilding strength ASAP after birth. I took up strength training when our girls were 2 as I was left with diastasis recti and constant hip/back pain, took years to repair but still powerlifting now at 17wk pregnant. Showing early signs of spd but only caused me to reduce my squat weights a bit faster than I'd like atm.

Good luck with your little duo, twins are extra special.
