Hi

Where do you begin to look for what bottles to buy? I know I want anti colic just Incase but what else is important. My microwave is quite small so need to get a new one of those to take a steriliser.

They all do a good job, just pick which ones you find the most comfortable to hold.

THATbasicSNOWFLAKE · 11/02/2021 17:35

Have a look at cold water sterilising, i find it much easier

JurassicShay · 11/02/2021 17:38

Mam self sterilising then you don't need a new microwave, their totally portable & have cute designs.

THATbasicSNOWFLAKE · 11/02/2021 17:41

Mam self sterilising are quite tall, they didnt fit my microwave

mariebaby3 · 11/02/2021 17:59

I got mam too. I don’t think you’ll know if they work for you until you’re actually using them iykwim. I bought the newborn set on offer and the Milton cold water steriliser which I found 100x easier than a microwave/electric one.

THATbasicSNOWFLAKE · 11/02/2021 18:02

I have used mam, tommee tippee and avent. No problems with any

Babyontheway21 · 11/02/2021 18:04

Sorry I’m a FTM do you buy two different sizes of bottle and at what age do they change to the bigger size?

I really liked the mam ones that go in the microwave, means no need for seperate sterilising equipment and they lasted well; we just bought 6 at the start and changed the teats when needed. I like that you can take the whole thing apart to clean as well, I would avoid the ones where the bottom doesn't come out, as even in a dishwasher they don't seem to come out as clean imo.

THATbasicSNOWFLAKE · 11/02/2021 18:12

If you get a decent bottle brush you can get your bottles nice and clean

Re sizes you don't have to buy the different sizes you could just get full sized ones in the first place, its teats that need changing more

Lemonysherbet · 11/02/2021 18:12

We started out with tommee tippee and bought some mam along the way. My little one took to both well. You can buy a starter kit from tommee toppee which has a few smaller bottles and some larger. They only drink a couple of ounces to begin with so small bottles are handy but they can easily drink from larger ones as they all take the same sized teets. You also change teets as they get bigger so the flow increases.

We have a microwave steriliser and I really like it but you can also get ones that sir out on the side. Massive things that run off electricity. You can also use Milton sterilising tablets which can be used with a special bucket which pushes the bottles under the water.

It's a bit overwhelming at first but it soon becomes second nature. And congrats on your baby :)

DollyP23 · 11/02/2021 18:12

I would say just buy a few bottles to see if they suit your baby - you can easily buy more when you know they are right. We get on well with mam. We use cold water steriliser as they don't fit the microwave - super easy.

You'll know when baby needs a bigger feed as they'll finish the feed size you're making - don't worry about a set age just be guided by baby's appetite. With mam, you get two bottle body sizes in the starter pack so you can size up when you need

Babyontheway21 · 11/02/2021 18:19

Thanks everyone, it sure is overwhelming. They all seem to get equally as good/bad reviews. I guess I just need to pick one to start withSmile

FTM too but I have heard a lot about Dr Brown. We have a few TTippee, Dr Brown, Nuby and Mam so see which ones work.

ArtfulScreamer · 11/02/2021 20:15

With my first I tried Dr Brown but found them a right fiddly pain in the arse and my daughter didn't take to them. I then tried Mam so much easier and the self sterilising feature is a god send when you go away or out anywhere. This time around I've bought Mam straight away and always recommend them to others.

THATbasicSNOWFLAKE · 11/02/2021 20:25

I think a lot of people go for Dr Browns as they are expensive and 'the best', a bit like Aptamil

I had Mam with dc4 and sometimes struggled to get the next teats easily so for dc5 i got Tommee Tippee as they sell them EVERYWHERE!

SylviaPlath1984 · 11/02/2021 20:32

Another vote for mam here, self sterilising is a god send honestly

MeadowHay · 11/02/2021 20:34

I agree with PP to buy a brand that your closest shops sell the teats for as that will make your life easiest. We used Phillips Avent and our local supermarkets and pharmacies within a few minute walk sold all the sizes of their teats so that was convenient. DD fed from them fine both when she was mixed fed and then exclusively bottle fed. We used their dummies too, again as the local shops sold them.

c24680 · 11/02/2021 20:40

I bought tommee tipppee bottles, still using the bigger ones with my two year old now, I plan to use them again.

I have however bought the Milton cold water steriliser this time as the electric sterilisers were a bit of a faff!

pinkyboots1 · 11/02/2021 21:35

I really struggled with the wide bottles coz I have tiny hands so that may be worth taking into consideration especially in the early days when they feed regularly

Babyontheway21 · 11/02/2021 22:07

What height is the largest MAM bottle could anyone tell me that, wondering if it’ll stand in my microwave Hmm im getting the TT milk prep machine I suppose I will need to check if that requires a certain size bottle too.

OP posts:
THATbasicSNOWFLAKE · 11/02/2021 22:14

You can use any bottles with the prep but if you use TT bottles you can use the lid which comes with the prep when you shake after the hot shot, its a bit less messy than using the teat/lid bit of the bottle

Overthinkingalways · 11/02/2021 22:18

We used MAM with prep machine fine. Large and small bottles. Seriously though, look into cold water sterilising it’s so much easier. You just change the water and tablet once a day and anything you Chuck in is good to go after 10mins. Even teethers dummies etc. The microwave sterilise function of the mam is handy when out and about but you have to balance everything. Set it off then wait for it to cool right back down. In that time it’d be done in the cold steriliser!

Babyontheway21 · 11/02/2021 22:30

Spooky I was just looking at the Milton cold water steriliser there and actually looks like it would be perfect for me other than it’s quite big to sit out. Oh I didn’t realise there was a lid to shake the bottle with.

THATbasicSNOWFLAKE · 11/02/2021 22:32

We have the milton one, was about £12 on amazon if i remember rightly

If you are going to do cold water sterilising then check the tablets you buy, some require you to rinse items after taking them out but the actual milton ones don't

noonieroonie · 11/02/2021 22:38

With our first we bought 1-2 bottles of a few brands to see what she liked the most and Mam were a clear winner. We've used Mam from the start with our 2nd and no problems. If you join boots parenting club they often have offers on to get a free Mam bottle & dummy so you could try that (depending on how long you have to go). I managed to get 3 free bottles in my last pregnancy.
