Hi guys. I’m stm 9 weeks pregnant and nearly 18 stone 🤦‍♀️ I was trying to lose Weight before try but that’s not quite worked out as you can see. Midwife said I’m high risk and I’ve
Been prescribed extra folic acid and vitamin d. Anyone else. I’m so worried now being labelled high risk! 😭

Me :) BMI is over 30 (not exactly sure what it is as stopped weighing myself due to previous issues). There was a thread on here recently about successful pregnancies with high BMI :)

Also there are several websites about plus size pregnancies :)

BabyC21 · 29/01/2021 17:12

Yep 5mg folic acid is standard for anyone with a higher BMI. Regarding the vitamin D... that wasnt mentioned to me but I’ve put myself on vitamin D since august anyway cause of covid 🙈 wishing you a happy and healthy pregnancy xx

Chelyanne · 29/01/2021 17:35

I was told by midwife that I'd get extra but so far no more word about it.
Don't worry about being labeled as high risk. I've clocked up a few risk factors over pregnancies. Previous large baby over 4.5kg, only our 1st was average size. I've had 3 babies with high fluid levels. Overweight, I was classed as obese when pregnant with my twins but pregnancy went well anyway. Previous cesarean is now on my list too. I get to see the consultants in March. My eldest I remained under midwife led care but all the others I was under consultant led care which is hospital based.

LauEli · 30/01/2021 00:44

I was on the bmi pathway with number 1, it's really no biggie.
Extra scans 😊 I think i had 28 32 36 weeks which was lovely.
Few extra appointments with a consultant
Higher dose folic acid and baby aspirin everyday, but other than that nothing.

MaryShelley1818 · 30/01/2021 06:14

Yes, I've had it in both pregnancies along with aspirin.
I'd rather be labelled high risk and receive extra monitoring than not be as high BMI is a risk factor.

PineappleSun · 30/01/2021 09:00

This is me, I was aiming to lose a good amount of weight this year expecting it to take months to conceive, conceived in month 1 so now I'm stuck very overweight and I'm absolutely sick with worry about it.
@LauEli what is the bmi pathway?

Booboospud · 30/01/2021 10:28

Thank you everyone I’m feeling abit better. I did go down the higher bmi route with first baby but I was only just in that border so I wasn’t worried where as no I’m much bigger 🤦‍♀️. @pineapplesun how far along are you? I think the pathway just refers to the additional precautions in place and extra scans, consultant appointments etc, if I’m right? 🤔

@Booboospud I'm 5+5, I was convinced I could carry on doing what I was doing and lose some weight in the first trimester but I've been feeling so sick and awful it's just been eat what I can to survive it. My first midwife appointment is 2 weeks on Monday and I'm so worried she's just going to tell me off and make it all awful. When you talk about higher bmi, is anyone willing to share how high? Mine is over 40 Blush

bewitchingnight · 30/01/2021 11:41

@PineappleSun don't be worried, mine is 43 and the midwife was not judgemental at all. She was matter of fact and mentioned I would have extra growth scans because they usually measure the bump with a tape measure which isn't accurate if you are bigger. She told me about taking extra vitamin d which I was doing anyway and sorted a prescription for higher dose folic acid.

I asked whether I should try not to gain weight and she said it was more about making sure I was making healthy choices. I hope that helps put your mind at ease, I was nervous too.

Booboospud · 30/01/2021 11:59

@pineapplesun my bmi is about 41 or 42, the scales wernt working at the centre so she could work it out but I know it’s about that, she was lovely tho and wasn’t judgemental about my weight at all. I also thought I would carry on being healthy after finding out about baby and lost 3lb but I’ve been so off my food for weeks now that I’m just eating what ever I can face eating even if that’s sweet stuff at the moment, and hopefully when all the food aversions go ( 🙏) I can focus on healthy eating again and cutting out junk, so worrying tho

The 1st trimester is tough for food. I couldn't stand cook on the hob because of the smells but it's more tolerable now at 11wk. I also couldn't stomach my protein shakes which always make me feel full and top up protein intake without overloading on calories. Keeping up with any workout routines is a must. I do powerlifting, had to lighten the load a bit, ditch my lifting belt and reduce down from 3 to 2 sessions a week. Still managing around 75% of what I could do before without any issues. I was struggling with nausea during lifts but that's easing off now. A bit taboo... but I've been training fasted for over 2 years now and still doing that atm.

JMassey · 30/01/2021 13:07

Hello! I'm 20+1 with my first baby, also high BMI taking folic acid, asprin and vit D, both my scans have been fine, I had an appointment with the consultant a couple of weeks ago but as I'm relatively healthy apart from my extra weight I won't see her again until my first growth scan.

I was nervous, I didnt want to be made to feel like a hippo. But everyone ive come to meet in this journey has been really lovely. And I'm just taking the growth scans as a lovely bonus! X

Booboospud · 30/01/2021 13:14

@cheylanne it’s tough for cooking, I know what you mean by time I’ve cooked something I’ve
Gone off wanting it. Don’t think there’s anything wrong with keeping up your routines, plenary of people manage it safely. I’m keeping up my daily walks and I’ve been doing a workout in evening on youtube which is on this link, for anyone wanting to keep active I highly recommend bits for all
Trimesters, only 11 minutes and quite gentle so no lunges in sight! m.youtube.com/watch?v=X8wisNW70uQ @jmassie great to hear it’s all going well

Really glad to have found this thread. I will be 5 weeks tomorrow and my BMI is around 40. I feel really embarrassed about my weight. We had been trying for so long then nothing happened, I got fed up and put on 3 stone! I am hoping by being good I can lose a bit during pregnancy but I am not aiming to diet if that makes sense, just fill my body with things that will nourish it. Although I really don't feel like eating anything at the mo.

Can I ask those of you that have done this before, did you get a bump? I already look about 6 months pregnant just from being fat!

Chelyanne · 30/01/2021 14:59

Yep, I have had some pretty big babies so I get a distinctive bump.
I thought I was big with our son who was 10lb 12oz... then came the twin bump (pic taken day they were born), a whopping 17lb combined birth weight. I'm 5ft 8 too so carry pretty well.

Chelyanne · 30/01/2021 15:01

My BMI was 36 at booking with the twins. Was 7lb heavier after birth than pre-pregnancy and that came off quickly.

Booboospud · 30/01/2021 15:40

Beautiful bump @cheylanne . @yellowbeaker With my first my bmi was high and I weighed about 16.7 stone when got pregnant. I also had a 10.2lb baby, and had big bump that started to show around 5-6 months. I’m sure your bump will
Come, you start to notice the shape of your belly become a Big more rounded then boom there’s the bump

Thanks everyone for the reassurance, really appreciate it, I was honestly considering ending the pregnancy to give me time to lose weight. I was also worried about having a distinctive bump rather than just looking generally enormous, so thank you for posting your lovely pictures as well.

yellowbeaker · 30/01/2021 17:02

thank you so much for the replies. Its so good to talk to people who get it. My DP thinks in nuts already!

Booboospud · 30/01/2021 17:17

Glad that this thread has helped not only me but others 😊. We will get through this together ladies. Threads still there and my inbox always open if needed x

I weighed 13 stone 7 on my booking appointment on Friday, I am only 5ft3 so that puts my bmi at 33 so I have to have 5mg folic acid and maybe aspirin as I have a varicose vein from my last pregnancy. This time last year I was 2 stone lighter. I am just trying to eat healthily and for me the biggest thing is exercise. At the moment I am doing 30 minutes of low impact aerobics 3x a week going to do my best to make it 5 days a week. My midwife said I would put on weight during pregnancy, it was a given but as long as I exercise and listen to my body it should make things a bit easier. I am high risk anyway due to oligohydraminos with first pregnancy and 2 sections.

RandyGiles06 · 01/02/2021 16:37

Hi, I had to have extra folic acid with DC1 and now pregnant with DC2, I got in touch proactively with the GP surgery and asked them to prescribe me the folic acid as I’ll be nearly 10 weeks by the time I speak to the midwife so seemed pointless! They prescribed it no questions asked. My BMI will be 40 or 41 I think Blush I was hoping to lose weight before this pregnancy but it just didn’t happen... I didn’t have any problems with my first pregnancy though, no issues weight related or otherwise and I got a lovely neat round bump Smile I hope the same happens this time!

Bubbles1st · 10/02/2021 16:39

Hi, I've just been prescribed the higher dose of folic acid. Does anyone know if I can continue to take my pregnancare vitamins with it in too?

Hi, I have a high bmi, much higher than yours. This is my 3rd baby though. With my first my bmi was around a 42 and I didn't get a noticeable bump until around 36 weeks. It does depend where you carry your weight though. I carry all mine in my stomach area.
