Glass of wine in early labour?!

Hi there not an urgent one by any means...but I read in a book recently that a glass of wine once in early labour could be very beneficial and help relax you...and no risk of any issues to baby at this late stage. I raised this with my midwife yesterday at 38 wk appointment and although she couldn't officially encourage it, she definitely gave my the impression it would be absolutely fine to have a glass of wine!

I'm not sure how i feel about it let alone if I'd even want a glass.of wine...I've not drunk any alcohol throughout my pregnancy as haven't really fancied it...

But maybe it would be a great way of celebrating labour and taking the edge off..anyone else had any experiences or thoughts on a cheeky sauvingnon blanc in early labour?!

Thanks!

I had DD at home and had a medicinal whisky in early labour. Very nice it was too!

RJnomore1 · 28/01/2021 19:19

No issue with it but I was quite sick and can imagine that would have made it worse

India999 · 28/01/2021 19:23

My midwife recommended it!

ShalomToYouJackie · 28/01/2021 19:25

Could it interfere with any of the medicines you might be given in labour?

barkypup · 28/01/2021 19:26

I don't think it would do the baby any harm but when you're about to run a marathon i reckon loads of water would be better.

Oneandabean · 28/01/2021 19:28

There’s no issue with the occasional glass of wine during pregnancy, it won’t cause harm as long as you’re not drinking regularly or to excess. I’m currently in a slow early labour and hadn’t thought of a glass of wine so you’ve just made my night 😂

Twickerhun · 28/01/2021 19:30

I would have loved a glass of wine but I gave birth too early in the day each time. If I could have easily I would have

FineWhiteBread · 28/01/2021 19:30

No idea but wondering if arriving to give birth and smelling of wine would trigger concerns from the staff?

Dorset555 · 28/01/2021 19:39

@Oneandabean wishing you all the best!! Hope it helps if you do decide to have one!
Hmm yea the thought of turning up at hospital with wine breath isn't ideal...I gues 1 glass of wine max?! A hangover is not what I'd need in labour but I'm sure it wouldn't be bad with so much else going on...
I'm going to get a nice bottle of Gavi for the fridge just in case...I suspect my boyfriend may drink the vast majority!!

I think this is just one of those ‘see how you feel at the time’ ones. Better than the suggestion to bake a bloody cake in early labour that I got! When it comes to it you might be feeling like it, or you might feel a bit sick or anxious or like you want to be fully in control. So just go with the flow - that’s basically the only useful advice for labour anyway. Good luck!

angstridden2 · 28/01/2021 19:43

I was induced and was taken out to lunch and had a glass of wine on each occasion before getting to hospital. very civilised!

Dorset555 · 28/01/2021 19:47

Oh that sounds like a dream @angstridden2 :-) x

May be coincidence but two very quick and easy births....🍷

Teakind · 28/01/2021 20:32

Someone once told me the French often have a glass of champagne when in labour. No idea if it’s true or not but sounds rather nice : )

Chelyanne · 28/01/2021 20:34

I wouldn't. But then I'm tee total

tatutata · 28/01/2021 20:36

I couldn't have kept it down, but sure if you feel like it...

shouldistop · 28/01/2021 20:39

It wouldn't do any harm to the baby but you'd be better off sipping plenty of water and eating something nutritious as you could go all day and night after that without eating anything or being able to keep water down

BalloonSlayer · 28/01/2021 20:57

Pethidine is allowed and that's similar to heroin so I wouldn't worry about a glass of vino tbh

girlofnow · 28/01/2021 21:24

Well it's not going to do any harm but I doubt you'll fancy it to be honest!

Dorset555 · 28/01/2021 21:29

Thanks everyone!! I'll see how I feel and won't be scared to have a bit if I fancy it...it will probs be the last thing on my mind Grin

If its under half a glass then maybe but personally I wouldn't I'd eat a good meal for fuel and drink plenty of water

JustAnotherUserinParadise · 28/01/2021 22:03

Ooh that sounds great... I'm totally going to have one! 37 weeks now and been craving wine so badly almost the entire time!

JustAnotherUserinParadise · 28/01/2021 22:03

^ although just for the record I've been good and had just a sip twice!

indemMUND · 28/01/2021 22:56

This reminded me of Janet from 2 pints when she's in labour, a can of beer in one hand and a ciggie in the other while being pushed in a wheelchair Grin
I get your point OP but early labour isn't guaranteed to be over the yardarm and who knows how you'll feel at the time. I craved a drink during pregnancy but during labour (even early) I was primal, like an entirely different person unable to focus. Don't think I even managed a drink of water.

Dorset555 · 28/01/2021 23:14

Haha yeah good point I think the idea of it being a bit of a treat / celebration is actually making me look forward to going into labour a bit more....I'm sure the reality would be very different...at 5am or something its unlikely to be my priority!!! Still worth getting a bottle in the fridge i think :-)
