I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.
There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.
MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk
If you need help in obtaining medication, phone them on:
024 7638 2020
Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/topics/nausea-vomiting-in-pregnancy
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy
I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.
It has been suggested that I add some practical tooth cleaning advice: a lot of sufferers find using a child's small toothbrush and strawberry toothpaste far less nauseating.
On my image of a pink castle: that is an image I use because when I was little, my family had a Snakes and Ladders board with an image on the last square of a pink castle in the clouds. As Hyperemesis is so like a grotesque version of Snakes and Ladders - eat a meal, go up a ladder, first thing in the morning bile run, down a snake - I have used the image of that pink castle on the last square of that Snakes and Ladders board as a metaphor for the happy end of Hyperemesis.
Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

Hi ladies. Currently 10 weeks and had severe HG to the extent my urine had countless ketones according to the consultant such that they admitted me into the ward.

I'm now on Ondansentron because cyclizine was just not working on my body. It's been two weeks and Ondansentron actually works.. however you do feel the occasional queasiness but it's better than actual prolonged vomits

LucindaE · 17/07/2021 22:04

haidri Welcome. I am sorry to hear that you had to be admitted, but happy to hear that Ondansetron is helping you. My usual question: did they give you a laxative as tied up bowels are frequent with that?
It's good you don't feel too bad, as 10 weeks is very often the worst time. You'll find plenty of support on here. I include my normal spiel that might help. Most sufferers find that they improve a lot at some point between weeks 14 and 20. Even those who are unlucky enough to suffer throughout generally are not as ill later on as they are in the first part. A good anti acid can make a surprising difference to the sickness. Kesostix are worth buying online or from a chemists, as while they aren't they best test of dehydration, hospitals take them seriously. When reporting on the vomiting to doctors, remember to emphasize the number of heaves in each vomiting session, as doctors tend to count these as 'vomits' and this can lead to their underestimating the severity of your symptoms. Besides drinking through a straw, here are some drinks that have helped others: full sugar flat coke (if you don't find it too acid), ice lollies, the juice of tinned fruit, Lucozade, apple juice, Ribina, Dr Pepper, soda water, Elderflower water, tonic water, ice cubes, Iron Bru, lemonade, lemon squash, orange squash, orange juice (if not too acid), fizzy orange, 7Up, isotonic drinks, sips of chocolate milkshake (maybe soya), fizzy water, apple juice, Robinson's fruit drinks, Rubicon sparkling mango drink , raspberry Lucozade sport and frozen ice cubes of flat Lucozade sport . Foods of a sort include tinned fruit, cuppa soup, nibbles of crisps and chips, cheap ice cream, Scotch pancakes, bagels and biscuits and slices of melon and mango. Protein drinks have also been mentioned.
Waves to all.

@LucindaE omg I'm suffering from painful constipation to the extent I've got haemorrhoids it's actually horrible. I had no idea this may be linked to the anti sickness.

So far I'm only enjoying ice lollies and yogurt in the morning. Otherwise I'm barely able to eat even with the anti sickness in.

I may try the fizzy drink with hopes that I don't feel too queasy. I hope this goes by 14 weeks.. I can't bare any more 😧

thingymaboob · 18/07/2021 12:12

Hiya @haidri . Sorry to hear you're suffering. Fellow constipated ondansetron user here! No advice, just sympathy.

Week 10 is here and as predicted, it's ramped up again. Despite taking stemetil, cyclizine and ondansetron I have been vomiting all morning. Violent sickness to the point where I can't breathe & associated incontinence. Not sure how I'm going to look after my isolating 3 year old this week if it's carrying on like this! 4 weeks of this hell. Not sure how much more I can take!

haidri · 18/07/2021 12:24

@thingymaboob no way! Despite taking both cyclizine & Ondansentron you're still vomiting? Have you checked your ketone levels??

LilmissCa · 18/07/2021 12:40

@thingymaboob ohhh noooo.
Big hugs to you!
Do you have any HG day case units near you?

thingymaboob · 18/07/2021 13:05

Hiya @haidri I have 0 ketones
@LilmissCa I could go directly there but they won't accept without ketonuria. Which is ridiculous because ketones do not indicate dehydration!!

LilmissCa · 18/07/2021 15:08

@thingymaboob ah yes.. it won't take long before the ketones to rise if the vomiting keeps up.

thingymaboob · 18/07/2021 17:53

Things have calmed down this afternoon. I took 8mg ondansetron at once (I'd recently taken 4mg about 5 minutes before throwing up but saw it had come up) and that helped. I then ate a plain jacket potato which helped.

LucindaE · 18/07/2021 21:39

haidri Do ask the doctor to prescribe a stronger laxative like Lactulose.
thingymaboob So annoying that they insist on ketones measuring. I am glad you were able to eat that potato. You are in the thick of it at the moment and I hope things ease a little.
LilmissCa Great advice.

@LucindaE hopefully the consultant can sort that

LucindaE · 19/07/2021 21:20

haidi With any luck! My sympathies to those suffering in this heat today.

thingymaboob · 19/07/2021 21:38

Evening ladies. This heat is unbearable, wish I didn't live in a terrace in a city. It's 30 degrees in my DDs room. Even opening windows isn't helping. Been a good day today. Eaten shreddies, egg sandwich and a cheese jacket potato and felt ok. I think it makes a difference if I take omeprazole early (like 5am), which I did today as it calms the acid down. Still isolating with DD. It's grim in heat, it's too hot in garden !

LucindaE · 20/07/2021 20:52

thingymaboob Much sympathy about the heat in a city. It's really good
that you were able to eat that!

OP posts:
abbs1 · 20/07/2021 21:33

@thingymabob i totally sympathise. This heat is horrendous esp when suffering hg. Its making my nausea so much worse! My little boys room is 28C and we live on a housing estate. Thankfully its raining here now hopefully it helps to cool things down.
I'm so glad youve been able to eat something. Thats really good progress.

I feel very nauseous but my medication has been increased and so far ive only thrown up once but just wanting to eat and eat cause as soon as i feel hungry the nausea hits so badly. Im only 6+3 so i have a long way to go still.

thingymaboob · 20/07/2021 21:57

Hiya @abbs1 and @LucindaE and everyone else suffering in the heat.
@abbs1 it seems like xonvea is really effective. I am pleased vomiting episodes are minimal. I'm jealous that it's raining. I'd love a bit of rain right now. Bristol is crazy hot and set to be until Thursday.

It's really up and down for me at the moment. I violently vomited all morning and slowly ate a medicinal piece of toast, then things have calmed down a bit and then this evening I've been ravenous. I think it's because I'm so dosed up on anti sickness. I have taken advantage and eaten oven chips and beans and an egg sandwich (which I really craved). I actually made it too, which is first time I've made any food for myself in a month. Still having issues with fluid though. All liquid is repulsive.

InvisibleDreamer · 21/07/2021 18:07

After two overnight hospital stays last week am hoping I have now turned a corner. Still can barely eat anything (have lost about half a stone so far) as it makes my stomach churn for hours after but just about managing enough liquid to keep self out of hospital. Physically I am very weak.

First midwife app 2moro at 11 weeks pregnant (even though I should have been seen way before now due to pre existing health issues!) they are refusing to do phone visit and insisting I go in. I’m not very happy about it as I’ve already had every possible physical test whilst in hospital and it’s all in my notes.

Anyway just wanted to have a moan with people who understand as I’m just so fed up of it all.

@thingymaboob same here with liquids even water tastes disgusting can only manage apple juice. I also was still severely nauseous and vomiting on onadestran and cyclizine but they are just about keeping it under control now. The doctors were a bit shocked I was as bad as I was whilst taking both of them but I guess there must be quite a few of us who find the medication isn’t that effective?

Ttcbn2 · 21/07/2021 19:21

Can I have hyperemesis without the actual vomiting all day?

I’m currently vomiting around 5 times a day, but I feel so sick and dizzy all day long..

My first pregnancy I had hyperemesis all the way through and vomited so much every day.. but I actually feel worse this time around..

I’m just crying all the time and I feel so depressed

I’m now taking cyclizine 3 x a day and praying I get some relief soon x

abbs1 · 21/07/2021 20:09

@thingymabob yes if definitely seems to be working well for me. Im on the max dose but compared to my last pregnancy its night and day different.

@ttcbn2 i really feel for you. Can you request Xonvea? Im on it and its helping me so much with stopping a lot of nausea and vomitting. If not definitely seek something stronger than cyclizine like ondansatron or metoclopromide which seems to work for many women including myself. The nausea is horrendous especially in this heat.

abbs1 · 21/07/2021 20:11

@invisibledreamer im so sorry youve been in hospital so poorly and the midwife isnt showing understanding. I went through this in my last pregnancy and the midwife wasnt very understanding. I know they need to take bloods but im sure youve had that done plenty of times already. Can you maybe call and ask to speak to head of the midwife team to see what can be done to accommodate you as you are so unwell?

thingymaboob · 21/07/2021 20:24

@InvisibleDreamer glad you've had some relief from hospital. Are you taking anything else as well as cyclizine and ondansetron? I've found stemetil an effective 3rd drug.

@abbs1 fingers crossed it stays that way

@Ttcbn2 definitely sounds like Hyperemesis to me. Mine is different this time. Last pregnancy I could drink fluid but couldn't eat food and lost 10kg. This time food is better but cannot get enough fluid in me.

Today has been one of the worst days in a while. Vomited about 10 times and feel like hell.

Thanks @abbs1 I’m going to give my drs a call in the morning and ask for something stronger, if I could control the feeling of nausea and dizziness I feel like I’d be able to function a lot better… my daughter has been isolating since last Tuesday and I’ve literally been in bed since then.. I have no idea how I’m going to manage going back to work next week 😭 xx

Thanks for your reply @thingymaboob, last pregnancy I was literally vomiting 30+ times a day it was horrendous.. this time around the vomiting isn’t nearly as severe but I feel worse! It’s so awful :(

Sounds like you’ve had a really tough day! I hope you get some relief soon xx

LucindaE · 21/07/2021 21:09

InvisibleDreamer Sympathies over those two hospital visits.
That is a large weight loss over a short time. You may b e at the worst stage. Good suggestions from abbs1 and thingymaboob.
Ttcbn Five times a day is a fair amount, far more than is to be expected with even severe normal pregnancy sickness. Remember to count each heave as a vomit when talking it over with doctors, as doctors often do this and I'm assuming you mean five separate heaving sessions?
abbs1 Cheering you on. I am glad Xonvea is helping.
thingymaboob I'm glad that after such a bad morning you were able to eat a fair bit.
Thinking of everyone in this heat. No sign of rain here. I was looking at the swifts up near the scattered clouds.

@LucindaE yeah today it has been 5 separate sessions, I don’t feel like I’m being sick much.. but I need some relief from the nausea and the dizziness so I can function 😭 x
