Melissajones124 · 26/01/2021 19:40

Went for my growth scan at 32wks. I’m high risk as it is. Baby measured 5.2lbs. Which the doctor was concerned about. How reliable are the measurements? I would like to think they are accurate due to the doctor being a bit worried.
Please could I have some advice and opinions.
Thank you x

Sorry should of added that 5.2lbs is bigger than what she should be. She should be around 4lbs

I was told my dd would be 5.5lbs a couple of days before I had her, she was 8lb 1! Not sure how accurate they are. My bump measured small and they were really worried she would be tiny. Needless to say she didn't fit in any of the tiny baby clothes I brought 😫🤦‍♀️

Melissajones124 · 26/01/2021 19:46

Okay. I’ve been told she is big so they have done tests to see if I’ve got diabetes through the pregnancy which can cause big babies. And the doctor said I’ve got another scan in 3 weeks but they think they might have to talk to me about delivery options if she is still measuring big. But certain members of my family are giving me grief about it and I want to trust the doctors opinion more than family. But I’m not sure. Who would you trust more??

Obv I am not medical expert but i defo think sometimes these measurements are wrong. My friend had a baby 3 months ago and had a growth scan at 36 weeks. They were highly concerned the baby hadnt grown any in the previous 4 weeks but his hearbeat was good and movement hadnt changed. They booked her in for an induction on her due date. They where expecting him to be tiny but he turned out to be 8.12lb. Still listen to your doctors advice, but you were asking are they always accurate and this was an occasion they wernt.

WalkiesAndBiscuits · 26/01/2021 19:48

I had regular growth scans after 32 weeks because my bump was measuring a bit small. I tried not to let it worry me but obviously easier said than done. In terms of accuracy, I can’t remember the figure but there is a degree of inaccuracy, especially towards the end. I can’t remember their predicted weight for him but I think he came out a bit smaller than expected but perfect in every way, no problems at all.

He’s now 6 months old and the HV is still blathering on about him being on the small side as he dropped down the centiles on the graph in the red book. But he is absolutely fine and the HV agrees, I think they just have to tick the boxes (rightly so but doesn’t stop us from worrying!!)

Melissajones124 · 26/01/2021 19:49

Yeah I understand they are off sometimes. I think I just need to ignore my family till my next scan just to make sure I’m not thinking about it too much. Just getting annoyed a bit I think

Tricky one, I didn’t agree with some of the doctors I’ve met during pregnancy and since having my LO, but they are highly knowledgeable about babies in general. You are highly knowledgeable about your baby. Opinions of family members are just opinions and may not apply to you. If it feels like they are giving you grief then try as hard as you can to block them out.

Chelyanne · 26/01/2021 20:00

The weight estimates can be way off.

Did they say how many weeks ahead baby was by the growth charts?

Our son was 4 weeks ahead by 28 weeks, at 32 weeks he was still measuring 4 weeks ahead so they left me to it. GTT was done twice and within normal ranges. He was born at 40+5 weighing 10lb 12oz but only took 15 mins to push the chunk out.

NinaMimi · 26/01/2021 20:07

I’d definitely trust the doctors more. I know these can be off and it’s not perfect but it would seem weird for doctors to be worried if they are constantly wrong.

All the best with the rest of the pregnancy. I’m having to have growth scans too.

serialplanner · 26/01/2021 20:12

@Melissajones124 what are your family hassling about? What do they expect you to do?

I purposely tell our mums the minimum because of things like this. Don't need the stress.

Melissajones124 · 26/01/2021 20:18

@serialplanner they are just saying don’t trust what they are saying. So I’m really confused.

@Chelyanne from my graph I am 2 weeks ahead. I’ve got another scan in 2 and a bit weeks.
But he did say yesterday there is a high chance of either induction or c-section

Catlady21 · 26/01/2021 20:23

I was told both times mine would be big babies but they came in at 6lb and 7lb.

I do still trust in what the consultants say though as it's their job and they are more knowledgeable.

Melissajones124 · 26/01/2021 20:25

Thank you @Catlady21 I’m going to just chill till I know more just thought I would ask other mums as my sister is just down my throat saying the doctors are always wrong.

I had a growth scan at 34 weeks and was told my baby was just over 5 pounds which put him/her on the 38th centile so I don't think your baby sounds that big? I asked the sonographer of the weights were accurate and she said no. Did they say was percentile your baby was on?

Melissajones124 · 26/01/2021 20:44

@JoandLily on my graph she is above the 97th centile so that’s why they are worried as she is above the high range

At least they're not going to just leave you like they did me, I didn't mind the size of him (good prep for our twins) but the 6 day labor was exhausting.
Urgh to inductions, I had one with our 1st and I wouldn't volunteer again. I had an elective section with our twins, that was much better than I thought it'd be.

Either way so long as both you and baby get to the end safely who cares how it all happens. Don't stress yourself out about it.

Melissajones124 · 26/01/2021 21:05

@Chelyanne thank you so much for understanding and sorry if it was an annoying question and I wish you all the best with your babies xx

I had a growth scan at 37 weeks and was told my baby weighed 6lb exactly. My baby was born at 40+6 weighing 6lb 7oz.
I know it's easier said than done but try not to worry

paranoiamumma · 26/01/2021 21:18

I was told my baby would be 8lb I was over due by one say and she was 5lb6 I was tiny in pregnancy and only gained 3lb the whole time .

Melissajones124 · 26/01/2021 21:36

I’ve gained loads, I was 6.5stone when I found out I was pregnant and J was 10st3pounds last week

OP posts:
Doublechins · 26/01/2021 22:00

I had growth scans with my third. They encouraged me to have a section as they said he was big and would be >10lb at birth if he went to term.He was born on his due date and weighed 8lb 12.

Thirdlifecrisis · 26/01/2021 22:41

The results can be inaccurate. I've had 3 growth scans and they've been all over the place, but the general trend is fine. It's the trend that matters really (unless the baby is incredibly large or small). You may find she comes down on the curve in future scans. There's always some uncertainty in measurements so they can only advise you the safest option based on the information they have at the time.

grandmasterstitch · 26/01/2021 23:07

I got told at 35 weeks that my DS was 8lb3oz. Everyone panicked, I got tested for GD again and they booked a c section. Had another scan and they said he was big but not as huge as they expected so they induced me. He was 8lb3oz at 39 weeks so they really were wrong. Try not to worry, see what your next scan brings

serialplanner · 27/01/2021 06:16

@Melissajones124 oh I seeeee. I mean if the doctors were concerned they would have you in everyday if they needed to.

Some babies level out so 3 weeks is probably so they can check the changes.

As you'll see from the other posters lots of people are told their babies are big based on the graph and scans and sometimes it doesn't work like that.

I would trust the doctors and see what happens. Tell family a bit less of they are like this.
