Buying for a summer baby - clothing help!

Okay so had our 20 week scan today and found out we are having a boy 🥰 Due at the start of June and now I feel like I can start buying things!

For a summer born newborn, will they actually wear and sleep in sleepsuits or do you need more short sleeved things/just bodysuits?

Never thought it would be this confusing, there are bodysuits, ones with long arms, sleep suits, and rompers which are like short sleeved short legged sleep suits?! 🤯

What do I actually need? Obviously I know we live in England and it’ll probably rain all summer but don’t want to buy a load of stuff baby won’t wear. Thanks :D

Following because I'm confused about the same! Due mid-May Confused

I had an august baby and yet in the hospital they told me to layer as it was quite cold for her. So at the beginning she wore short sleeved bodysuits under a sleep suit.

Tbh it’s not that differnt, you still buy the same stuff just less layering. Buy short sleeved bodysuits, fewer long sleeve and still sleep suits to sleep in.

Had a summer baby in 2018. Loads of short sleeved vests and sleepsuits and a few hats are really all we used. Also had some scratch mitts.

Get stuff in tiny baby, newborn and 0-3m as you really never 100% know which size baby will need to begin with and panic buying once baby has arrived is a total nightmare.

Try not to get too hung up on quality as some of the clothes will be ruined by stains and they wear the clothes for such a short period of time anyway (newborn lasted literally 2 weeks for us). Our baby was naked a lot of the time for plenty of skin to skin so clothes didn't really matter in the grand scheme of things.

Also cheeky wipes are a godsend. Good luck Smile

I did ask my sister to go buy a cardigan for her in the 3rd day as it wasn’t warm enough to take her out without one

Orlandoflorida1 · 20/01/2021 12:43

I’m due June too, first baby was October. I’m going with sleepsuits, I’ve got a few short summer rompers, I’m not buying much in the way of thick jumpers etc. Interested for other comments too

AnnaBegins · 20/01/2021 12:43

For my summer born baby, she slept in long sleeved sleepsuits except in a real heatwave when it was a vest and muslin sleeping bag. Daytime, short rompers were really useful. But also longer leggings and short sleeved vests to avoid sunburn on legs when outside.
Essentials were: 0.5 tog sleeping bag, short sleeved vests, rompers, sleepsuits, leggings, large muslins as light blankets, summer hat.

You will need body suits and sleep suits for definite.

If it's really hot they are still likely to need a bodysuit (vest) during the day but not anything else.

Overnight either both or just a sleepsuit - the ones with built in scratch mitts are fab. Although we found these baby gowns/bundles far far better for nighttime as no poppers for nappy changes

If u you want day clothes stick to soft stretchy short/joggers and t-shirts with a couple of cardigans or jumpers.

I live in a hot climate so can tell you what I do for my DS, although we do have AC so our house is kept at 23-24C

During the day he wears a short sleeved onesie with either shorts or trousers to hide the nappy (my irrational pet peeve!) or a 'romper' - the short sleeves, short legged all in one garment. We have 12 onesies, 6 shorts/trousers and 4 rompers on rotation.

At night he wears a long, closed footed zipped sleepsuit and has a 0.5 tog sleepsack. We have 6 sleepsuits and 3 sleepsacks on rotation.

A lifesaver item has been a personal fan which can attach to the buggy when we go out - would recommend one of those for when (if!) the temperature gets really hot in the UK.

Echobelly · 20/01/2021 12:45

I really like short rompers (eg sleeves and short legs usually a bit baggy) for tiny ones in summer, dressed mine in them a lot and often buy for summer babies. Covers them a bit, but keeps them nice and cool.

LaBellina · 20/01/2021 12:47

Congratulations OP !

My DS was born in summer 2019, he spent the first months in bodysuits, long sleeved t-shirts, cotton long trousers and sleep suits. Don't forget to buy socks and a sunhat as sunscreen isn't enough to protect him when you take him outdoors Smile

MrsMarrio · 20/01/2021 12:48

Congratulations! I had my son in June last year. He still wore short sleeved vests with a sleep suit over then as it got hotter I put him in a long sleeved vest and muslin swaddle. When it was even hotter short sleeved vest and muslin swaddle. Our house is very bad at regulating temperature and our room was 28 some nights.

MimiDaisy11 · 20/01/2021 12:49

I saw you can specifically get summer sleeping bags and suits. I was trying to look into this today as I don't want the baby to overheat. We've had some hot summers the past few years. Though I'm in the same position as you with first child due at start of June so I don't know any better lol.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 20/01/2021 12:54

Newborns don’t tend to roll so a cellular blanket is best rather than a sleep bag

crumble82 · 20/01/2021 13:16

I had an august baby and put her in a short sleeved body suit for her first night home. She cried non stop until I worked out she was cold and put her in a babygrow. They need more clothes than you think but go for thin layers rather than chunky jackets etc

SparkyBlue · 20/01/2021 13:21

I'd buy layers and then you can add as you need. It's impossible to predict. It could be sweltering or absolutely freezing. I had my second baby in August 2015 and while the weather wasn't great it was glorious in September and the first part of October that year . You will definitely need vests and sleep suits and the sales will be all on around the time you are due do hold tight on buying too much actual clothes . The smaller baby sizes all have amazing reductions.

Luckyelephant1 · 20/01/2021 13:30

This is a really useful thread so thanks OP. I'm due mid July. Terrified of overdoing the layers but also don't want baby to be cold!

Humpty11 · 20/01/2021 13:47

Oh I’m so glad you’ve posted this! Thank you!
I’m due at the beginning of June and have no idea what they need to wear, terrified of overheating the poor little mite but also aware that it might get a bit chilly compared to what I’d think. My son was born in the winter so it was much easier!

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 20/01/2021 13:51

My second baby was born this November, and I freaked out saying what do I put winter babies in, newborns are too small for padded suits, this is so hard...haha! Guess we all just like to worry
noscoobydoodle · 20/01/2021 14:03

I had a June baby (and also a May baby in a heat wave). I found they mainly wore long sleeve- either babygrows or long vests and leggings/joggers when tiny and usually a cardigan outside. I preferred long sleeve even in summer because of the sun. Once they were about bigger and fatter (3-6m) they also wore some short sleeve/leg rompers on hotter days. For bed, babygrow and sleeping bag or just babygrow if very hot. I found layers easier to pop on and off. My first baby felt the cold more than the second so always had an extra layer and a hat outside. Congratulations and hope the rest of your pregnancy goes well 😊

PFin · 20/01/2021 14:10

My baby is due May its my 2nd. Baby will still need to have layers which you can add and take away when necessary. Assuming your in UK you know what the weather can be like 😂 they always advice go off what your wearing and add one layer for young babies. Im in the middle of buying but currently for sleeping and relaxing ive bought short sleeve bodysuits/vests and then a sleepsuit over the top should be enough! Then a sleep bag or cosy swaddle for nap and sleep. For when I actually dress baby if covid goes away and we leave the house i havnt bought much but I have bough a few wee romper suits and dresses all with tights and long sleeve tops underneath. I'll prob stick on a short sleeve body too and have a light jacket handy to add of take off. Then by 3 to 6 months seasons will be starting to change so I have bought long sleeve bodysuits/vests, more plain long sleeved tops for layering, heavier jackets, cosier sleepsuits and heavier tog duvets. You baby will never be cold as long as you have a jacket and blanket to cover them up in.

Mysa74 · 20/01/2021 14:23

I'd stick with baby vests and long legged baby grows to start op. Definately don't worry about outfits at first. Dressing a new baby is unexpected scarey!
I'll second the previous poster who said how wonderful cheeky wipes are, ordinary disposable baby wipes burn, I accidentally used one to blow my hayfevery sore nose on one once. Never again.

Jinglebells87 · 20/01/2021 14:27

I'm due right at the beginning of June too! And we are also expecting a boy! I've bought sleeveless vests, sort sleeve bodysuits and some cotton trousers so far to put over the top whatever else he might be in . I will pick up a couple of lightweight jumpers/zip up tops for cooler days and some long sleeve sleepsuits for night time (because I like the built in scratch mitts these usually have).
I had an august baby last time and some days he was just in a vest and other days we needed to layer him up a bit more.
I would try and have a few different options but I'm going to buy more nearer the time when I can see what the weather is like.
Good luck!! Xx

Chelyanne · 20/01/2021 14:31

After our 1st whi had a ridiculous amount of outfits, our other 4 lived in sleepsuits and bodysuits for months. We got more outfits as they got older but it's just easier to change them in the simpler clothes, saves money as they outgrow things super fast too. Too much vomit and explosive poo with the newborns lol.

springdale1 · 20/01/2021 14:37

My daughter was born last June and it was absolutely boiling. Our bedroom at night was 28 with two fans on for a few weeks after she was born so just a nappy and a 1 tog swaddle bags. Highly recommend the love to dream ones, I found other ones gave her heat rash on her arms because they held them so tight.

We had sleepsuits but didn’t really use them until later in the year. In the summer she wore just a vest under her swaddle bag. She wore just a nappy for the first few weeks but if we were going out little short sleeved rompers.

My biggest recommendation is to buy a fan or little AC unit now while they are cheap because you’ll definitely need one at some point! It was so stressful trying to get the room to a safe sleeping temperature.

Reeva1988 · 20/01/2021 15:55

I’m due in June and I’ve bought the usual short sleeve and sleeves vests and then long sleeve sleepsuits . I’ve gathered on nights it’s too hot I’ll just put him to sleep in a short sleeve vest . I’ve stuck to buying cotton outfits , nothing knitted . X
