What's classed as excessive weight gain in pregnancy?

Please don't quote the expected amount per week or give links to websites, I've read them.

I'm just wondering how much above the expected gain is typically considered excessive.

I started a 12st7, lost 6/7lbs in first trimester then put it all back on and more! I'm now 3kg above where I should be according to a weight gain calculator.

I wouldn't worry about it too much, easily lost with some diet changes after birth.
I gained 4st with our 1st, same with 2nd, 3rd just 2.5st. Stopped weighing myself with the twins though so no idea how much I gained overall with them but was 7lb heavier after birth than pre-pregnancy.

AnneLovesGilbert · 13/01/2021 22:03

Considered excessive by whom? As you say, you’ve seen the guidelines for what’s expected.

AprilBundle · 13/01/2021 22:10

@AnneLovesGilbert by the medical profession not the likes of you FFS Hmm

@Chelyanne thanks, I'm only 0.4 stone above where I should be so I personally wouldn't class that as excessive?

@AprilBundle
I think so long as you are eating lots of nutritious foods and staying active a little over the calculators is nothing to worry about.
They are often based on an average size baby. I've only had 1 average sized baby, our twins were over 8lb each 2 week before their due date so far from average lol.

AprilBundle · 13/01/2021 22:38

@Chelyanne thanks. I'm trying to but we've just had Christmas and all Blush😂👍

Not sure why you’re being so aggressive. It was a neutral question.

AprilBundle · 14/01/2021 16:33

@AnneLovesGilbert don't kid yourself chuck Hmm

I would try not worry. I gained 4.5 stone with DD, she was a 9lb baby but it was still over the recommended weight gain. It came off easily enough once I had her and while I really stressed about it at the time I wouldn't in hindsight. I was a healthy weight before I had her and regained the same healthy weight relatively soon after (took less than 6 months and no excessive efforts).

Luckyelephant1 · 14/01/2021 18:48

How far along are you and when did you put on the most weight? Asking as a FTM just entering 2nd trimester and still lighter than I was when I started!

Changethetoner · 14/01/2021 18:52

I think over 2stone is a lot.
However, I would never judge, and everyone is different. Personally, I was so ill during pregnancy that I actually lost weight!

Fucking hell, maybe trim those catty claws there's probably a couple of lbs right there.

shouldistop · 14/01/2021 18:57

This calculator gives a pretty good indicator

www.calculator.net/pregnancy-weight-gain-calculator.html

I started my pregnancy overweight and 2 weeks after delivery was a couple of pounds lighter than before I got pregnant. I gained within the recommendations of this calculator.

meeeeh · 14/01/2021 18:58

I put on over 3 stone, I remained active but my appetite was high throughout so I was eating more than usual. Had no morning sickness just hungry all the time. Now I'm 4 months postpartum and still have 2 stone to lose which just isn't shifting even though I'm active/eating healthily and a lot less. If I'd gained less during my pregnancy i suppose weight loss after would've been easier/quicker

Avvii · 14/01/2021 19:01

I put on 4.5 stone. 2 weeks after birth 2 stone was gone, 12 weeks after birth I was back to my pre-pregnancy weight (no dieting). If you’re being fairly sensible I wouldn’t worry about it.

Ohalrightthen · 14/01/2021 19:03

If you want to know the opinion of medical professionals, read the guidelines! Theyre written by medical professionals.

Pumpertrumper · 14/01/2021 19:03

As the wife of a Dr and soon to be mother of two I can pretty confidently tell you that those ‘guidelines’ and figures you’ve quoted are what the ‘medical professionals’ expect you to gain.

If you gain more then it’s excessive (to varying degrees) and if you gain less it’s also concerning (again to varying degrees).

I think you’re probably trying to ask ‘how much weight can I gain before they think I’m a giant fatty regardless of pregnancy, or using my pregnancy as an excuse to massively let myself go’ but since you haven’t provided your height or BMI at the start of pregnancy no one can advise. No use telling us how much you weighed to start when you could be anything from 4’11-6’2 Hmm

ilovethecold · 14/01/2021 19:05

I put on 3 stone , I gave birth 7 weeks ago , I've lost 2 stone already , I really wouldn't worry about it

AprilBundle · 15/01/2021 16:17

@Luckyelephant1 @lobster8 @ilovethecold @Avvii @meeeeh @Changethetoner thank you lovelies xxx Wishing you all well Halo

I think I remember reading that 'normal' gain is supposed to be somewhere between 9kg and 16kg. So between a stone and a half and 3 stone, I think? Personally, I was very much at the upper end. I normally weigh around 62- 65kg. When pregnant with DS1, I was about 78kg. With DS 4 I was over 80kg. It was normal for me, and I managed to lose it all each time (with DS1 it took me 14 months to get back to my pre-pregnancy weight, with DS4 it was more like 18 months). I eat reasonably healthily but not crazily so (I eat plenty of salad and veg every day, but also eat plenty of dessert and the occasional kebab..)

upsidedownwavylegs · 15/01/2021 16:39

Depends. How much does that chip weigh? Hmm

Diorissimo1985 · 15/01/2021 16:51

This thread is hilarious

AprilBundle · 15/01/2021 18:01

@LaTomatina there exactly the sort of response I was after! Thank you for taking the time to be a decent person. No idea why some people enjoy trolling expectant mothers but I'm starting to feel it's just a MN bully thing 😂

I hadn’t realised this was still going. OP, being pregnant isn’t an excuse for being rude to people who’ve taken the time to bother replying to your thread.

Excessive weight gain is, by its nature, excessive, and puts additional strain and adds additional risk to your baby and to you. If you’re putting on more weight then you feel is healthy based on the guidelines - which have been written by medical professionals based on longstanding evidence - then it’s worth discussing your concerns with your midwife. They’ll guide you.

Best of luck to you.

LaTomatina · 15/01/2021 19:12

It's rotten judgy on here sometimes OP. You know yourself what's a realistic healthy weight for you and whether you are likely to run heavier or lighter. Try to eat sensibly and get a bit of excercise, and then don't worry too much. If anything is wildly wrong you will definitely know, and seek professional help. But probably it's fine. Good luck, and enjoy!
